A brilliant, original, open world with more stuff to do than you could shake a stick at. Self-directed adventure, a hybrid skill/level system. Yeah, it was horribly unbalanced, and making a pure melee character was suicide. So what if the original magic-learning system was horrendously tedious before the advent of prismatic tapers. In the age of Everquest, which was never anything more than your most standard high-fantasy, AC's Dereth was amazingly brilliant.
It's too bad that Turbine seems to have entirely lost that edge.

Again...Pre-CU SWG...really, Pre-Force-Sens., as well. But it was a great game. I could sit in the cantina, all day, singing, and then, if the mood took me, I could slice someone apart, if a rebel were to walk on in, or someone was being saucy. It was too much fun. And when you role played, and did it, well, you're name was normally well-known. Besides that, Ryzom is up there, for me. It reminds me of the classic days of SWG.
Now, as for the list, CoV/CoH. I love being able to make my character look as I please, right from the start, and to make my character tweaked, to my tastes.
ok best one in free might be fiesta online and archlord.paying ,pvp is still guildwars, wow im not sure you might have to do server hopping cause some server are dying or maybe they are all in arena thing cause it still say full lol.i d go recommended if you want to pve (rpg).
I've been hopping from mmo to mmo for the past 2 years now and I finaly found one that isn't boring! It has diablo2 style game play but harder and more engaging. The pvp reminds me of smash bros when it comes to mind games and set ups. I'm playing on the Global server and normaly go to square 2. The single player doesn't feel like a grind at all either. I'm talking about Lunia! It's even free and more characters are on their way! one of the best parts about the game is the arcade style game play and how player skill makes a big difference compared to most mmos. Even the story line is well done it seems to be inspired by record of lotus wars and ragnarok online! really cool game you guys should check it out! Oh one more thing the coolest thing is you find your self going back to play not because your addicted but because you actually feel like playing! it's so much fun!
Everyone know there is not a best MMO because everyone have there on views of a MMO. But of the top ten that I have posted which one is the best to you and why. No real long essays just something simple and sweet. Like my best MMO is Dark Age of Camelot reason why is because of the RVR system. Also the community is very helpful some of the times.
Asherons call 1 was the best mmorpg I've ever played. Probably cause it was my first though. The first is always the ebst.

Yes, the character creation in CoV/CoH is great. Shame it gets boring as soon as you enter the world.
The 32 professions allowed you to live out YOUR dreams, not those made up by coporate types gunning for a quick rise in subs. Dammit, I DID want to be Uncle Owen or that scumbag bountyhunter just coming into town on his shot-up speederbike or that pesky mediocre entertainer always asking for tips etc. etc.
Rest in Peace SWG for you have suffered enough at the hands of the greedy and incompetent. God Bless the boys over at the "other" site
FFXI was the best mmo for me. The classes were great, the community is one of the best and it is just alot of fun to play. Played it for 2 years and enjoyed my time. I sometimes miss it but it is time to move on to something different.
FFXI - The community was amazing. By now it's rather out dated especially if you are a new player. But it was still the best one I played. I constantly search for another MMO with an excellent community but never had as much luck as I have with FFXI. IF there was ever a FFXI-2 or something, I would be there for sure.
I love the Sandbox. I love how the game is more like a "second life" than second life is. The fact that most people ingame call some system or region their "home" and stay there most of the time and the fact that the devs are just like the players and you can always go into irc and discuss with some of them is beautiful.
It's a tough call, I have to tip my hat to DAoC and AO, but in the end pre nge SWG ftw. My reason being that it was nearly impossible to get bored playing that game because even if you got tired of one part of the game for a while there always seemed to be something different and worthwhile to put time into. e.g. crafting, space missions, mining, house keeping, etc.
No levels. If you like grinding for character progression, that's cool, but I hate that. That's why I love EVE's skill system. Just select what skill you want next and go do what you want to do, be it blowing ships up or even taking a few days break.
PVP is meaningful. Systems actually change hands. Corporations and Alliances sometimes break up or are destroyed.
Not centered around grinding for gear. Yes, there are variations on named modules / tech 2 / faction, but none of this raiding for a new hat that gives +68 to healing over your previous +62 to healing hat. Also the fact gear can be destroyed. Someone with a faction fit ship might be very hard to kill, but the feeling you get after destroying and looting that faction fit ship and pod him with expensive implants? Wonderful.
Tactical PVP over twitch based. I love twitched based in FPSs, but I prefer tactical combat in RPGs.
EVE has its flaws but I love its mechanics so much more than any other MMORPG I've played that I'm willing to forgive 'em.

Pre Cu SWG, when I unlocked my jedi it was the greatest accomplishment I could ever hope to make in another mmmorpg (and I have played them all).
My game's not on the list. My favourite was a 1991 game called Obscurity Online. Only me and a mate played it, but those were the days.
Asheron's Call.

WoW cause its fun and you don't get so bored playng it. I think they have done a fantastic job by creating that world.
Everything fits there unlike most other mmoprg-s.
WoW ofc... it showed devs how to put FUN into MMO's and also told devs that players will not accept buggy, unfinished games any more.
Pre-cu SWG

Without a doubt.

Original Asherons Call.
damned spell components!
I remember my first trip to subway and dying in the fall..
Going to the crater to get atlan weapon..
In a group to get a hollow weapon when i was really too low level to be there.. it's amazing how much we ran that day.. me mostly for my life.
The best moment has to go to standing by a lifestone and hearing the deathblow given to another player and reading the funny messages of their defeat.
Asheron's Call. The rush of being ganked at any time and the politics.
EDIT: ^^ And what he said all brings back memories.
pre cu swg .
still miss it....the crafting mainly.
