I have been out of MMO's for some time now but i would like to get back into the mix. My question to you all is this: What would you suggest to someone who is looking for a game that is immersive, fun, has great PvE and a a great environment to explore?
I have played EQ, DAoC and CoH. I liked different aspects of them all when i played. EQ2 wasnt complete when i played so i cant give it a fair judgement(obviously it wasnt good at release or i would be playing). I may give it another try.
Is CoH still the same game i quit? It got a bit boring killing things with my blaster. I like to explore and enjoy the community. Has it gotten better?
Thanks for the time guys!

CoX has never been the greatest game as far as exploring goes, unless you enjoy walking through back alleys to look at dumpsters.
But if you've been gone a long time, a lot has changed in the game. There is crafting now. Some zones have been redone. Vet rewards.
Personally, I'm still enjoying myself after 39 months. But I understand this game is not for everyone.
On a side note: If you haven't played EQII lately, that game has grown leaps and bounds since release. I would definately give it another chance.

Ive been told that about EQ2 by alot of people. I think ill give them both another try. Sometimes its fun blasting robots to pieces... other times I feel like eating gnome-chops.
Thanks for the post Motor...
PS. I remember wathcing that episode. I didnt seem as funny back then as it does now, hahahaha.... i need to get a cape.

CoX started off as being my Fantasy-Alternate Game. You just get tired of swords, magic and gnomes after a while. That was back in summer 2004 and since then DAoC, EQ2 and WoW came and went. Was kinda like CoX was my main game and just took me a while to realize it.
Not to mention, Flying is rather sweet.
how long ago did you quit COx?
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
It was around the release, however long ago that was, that i played. I had fun teleporting around and shooting up people, but then i gave it up after... i dont know... 6-9 months. Just didnt get much better for me. Without something new to discover, there are only so many mob types to smoosh. In EQ1 i had more fun running around zones and seeing things most players wouldnt bother to go off the beaten path for... in some games you have that option.
some ya dont.

There are additional features, but its still basically the best fighting mmo around. I will say the blasters are painfully boring because of their one dimensional nature, and the conflict of having a melee secondary set while being a primarily long range threat. I would suggest roll a troller. Pets, damage, heals, holds, buffs, debuffs, crowd control, its a fun archetype.

I suppose your right. Maybe the class made it a bit less fun for me. I have always played supporing role characters. I had and enchanter on EQ and he was propably my favorite. I may give another class a try, however i wish there were more unique zones to experience. I never felt that secret bunkers were very secret or that clockwork strongholds were very secluded.
Did I not get high enough level to experience unique strongholds and lairs?
I dont remember Dr. Doom ever squatting in a warehouse across the railroad tracks, next to the dumpsters.

Considering that the almighty Emmert once deigned to write that "range was a blaster's best defense", it always struck me as both ironic and stupid that you would put virtually all melee attacks into a secondary set of an AT that wasn't designed to survive melee. (Guess he made up for that bit of stupidity with "Defiance" or "Desperation" or whatever he calls that unique Blaster "death throes" attack).
On top of that, by taking away the ability to fight with SS or Fly on all the time, he took away the Blaster's best way to stay at range.
And btw, before anyone plays the "jousting card", let me assure you that jousting was never a Blaster's best strategy. (Kiting was, but that's another story). Yet even my Blaster, fighting with SS on all the time, couldn't get away from Troll Boss ranged attacks, and died plenty of times trying to solo in Red River. The reason? Once you fired off an attack, the mobs would immediately cue attack chains and respond. Given the inherent client-server latency, these attacks would hit - and often kill me - almost half a zone away.
With that in mind, Emmert's reasons for nerfing travel powers in combat revealed one of two things about the "Lead Designer" of CoH: either he didn't really know how his own game's mechanics worked, or he had them nerfed purely for PvP, even though he wrote many times it was done for both PvE and PvP.
In short, he was either ignorant (and by extension, incompetent) or lying.
And that's just one of the many, many reasons not to trust people like him with your money.
There really are no unique strongholds outside of high lvl TFs like Statesman's or a trial like Transcendence or Eden. Tyrant's layer possibly being the one exception, but basically the same warehouse you were fighting in at lvl 1 you will be fighting a lvl 53 AV in someday.

He's probably lying. There appears to be true evil behind Cryptic/NCsoft IMO. Its hidden in plain view. Encoded into the game for those who know what they are looking at, hence the name Cryptic no doubt. Questions I have discussed in-game with buds who agreed something was definately wrong after they noticed more than a few of them:
1)Why over every pwn shop is there a stylized 666? (in PI & IP)
2) why was i7 released on tuesday 6-6-06 (heavily bugged mind you)
3) after noticing #2, was i9's release May 1st 2007 (Intl communist Day and the 231 anniversary of the Bavarian Illuminati) a coincidence?
4) why is the symbol of so many villain groups an eye (CoT, Vampyri, Council, etc.)
5) why is every portal an eye ( The all seeing eye is one of the major symbols in theoccult. Like on the back of a dollar bill.)
6) why are there like 15 different versions of horns and only 1 version of wings for helms for heroes w/o cov
7) why is cov required to use sg bases in coh?
8) why are villains so much stronger than heroes in pvp?
9) why is there an ad for Red Beast (i.e. the devil)cola in SC?
10) why does every Wentworth's look like an eye from above? Look for yourself
11) Why are we heroes that kill our opponents under the euphemism "arrest" (something we do joke about occasionally)
12) why are there so many occult chest details including stylized 666s(3 swirl version) and inverted 5 point stars in heroes?
13) why do the hellions have the real occult symbol, the Goat of Mendes on their backs
14) why are witches hats one of the only quest clothing you can get?
15) why is Tabula Rasa's symbol a stylized 666 (again 3 6s swirled around)?
16) Why is there a chessboard in Peregrine Island referring to the plan of the occultists to rule the world? reference Zbiegniew Brzynski's the Grand Chessboard
17) why do the heroes costumes look like devils in so many cases?
18) why during every event do we work WITH the villains instead of fighting or competing against them?
19) why are the strongest scrapper/defenders dark based?
20) why is the symbol on every mutation SO an eye, and every natural SO a dragon ( again i.e. the devil)
Any one of these things, and there are more, might not be a big deal, but the summation of them indicates, IMO, this trend is not coincidental. Cryptic's symbol was a haunted house for years, and there founder's are outta England the same place that gave us media wonderkinds like Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stone all who had occult affiliation, but could this be the same old song with a new instrument? It seems to be incrementally getting people that play accustomed to occult imagery and ideology of using dark power for so called "good". Oh and Cryptic isn't the only company out there doing this type of stuff. Like Knight Online with places like Luferson Castle, The abyss and hell. Hey just cuz you (and I) don't serve the occult doesn't mean that they don't.
if I had ever played magic type heroes in coh, it would have thought it to be completely occult.

Ok Reborn17 methinks you been watching too many X-Files episodes! I am not going to comment on every one of your points, but I will make a few comments on some specific ones.
At #4 you say CoT, Vampyri, Council, etc.... the vampryi are part of the Council so they share the same symbol.
On point #6, there are actually 2 wings for helms and the reason for many different horns is that horns throughout history adorned helmets of many types.
For #7 CoV required to use bases since it is a feature OF CoV. Like how Jewelcrafting is a feature of The Burning Crusade expansion in WoW.
On to #8, villains aren't necessarily stronger than heroes in pvp. All depends on the player, archtype, slotting and enhancements used. Besides Blaster + Defiance + Sniper = Dead Villain.
Next at point #13 the Hellions have a real occult symbol because... they follow the occult. Early missions explain how they have made deals with various dark entities in return for their firey powers.
At Point 14 you say witches hats are the "only" quest clothing you can get. This is incorrect as during Christmas people could get santa hats and suits. Also during the Valentines Day even people could unlock the toga and laurel wreath hat.
Now at #17 I could counter why do some villain costumes look so white and angelic? Simple, player personal preference. You can make your hero/villain look however dark or nice you want to.
For point 18 it is because players enjoyed co-op missions previously so Cryptic put them in the game. With the Invasion the lore is simple, the Rikti want everyone dead or enslaved regardless if they are heroes or villains. We are fighting a common enemy.
Not sure how you define "strongest" scrappers/defenders are dark based. Go up against Banished Pathenon or CoT ghosts and dark powers are weaker. Regen is probably the best solo scrapper secondary, less downtime. Defenders are usually defined by their primary which is uncommonly dark since that set's heal power requires a successful tohit.
Finally on point 20, where do you get that Dragon = Devil? Traditional sybolism for The Devil is a goat or possibly a satyr. Dragons themselves in both western and eastern cultures aren't necessarily good or evil, depends on what kind they are and what time period the tales are from.
Wow. All I was trying to do was make a point about the incompetence and lies coming from the dev team at Cryptic, and we get an essay on occultism in the game?
Your points may very well be valid, but I don't see how they address whether the game has really gotten better. IMHO, just as the fish rots from the head down, so to go the fortunes of an online game "headed" by someone who either really doesn't know how his game works, or treats his customers like dirt by lying to them. Either way, no game gets "better" from that kind of leadership.
YMMV.
5) why is every portal an eye ( The all seeing eye is one of the major symbols in theoccult. Like on the back of a dollar bill.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Reborn, or born again, or whatever you are, if the "all seeing eye" is so offensive to you, especially on US money, I would be more than happy to relieve you of any "offensive" materials you may have!
As I said any one thing would be no big deal, but the instances as a whole are the issue. I do respect your points though and will respond to each:
"At #4 you say CoT, Vampyri, Council, etc.... the vampryi are part of the Council so they share the same symbol." My issue isn't that they all use the same symbol, the issue is the continuing recurrence of the all-seeing eye mentioned regarding SOs, portals, WWs etc.
"On point #6, there are actually 2 wings for helms and the reason for many different horns is that horns throughout history adorned helmets of many types." I just checked, there's 1 set of wings and 18 sets of horns. Besides who would u say sported the devil, demon or diablo horns? Or the ever popular sin-spikes?
"On to #8, villains aren't necessarily stronger than heroes in pvp. All depends on the player, archtype, slotting and enhancements used. Besides Blaster + Defiance + Sniper = Dead Villain." Having spent many hours attempting to effectively pwn villains in RV I can say almost definatively villains are stronger on the whole. Where is the hero equivalent of Assassin strike? Where is the Damage absorb? I have personally seen masterminds summon 11 henchman, and they can call as many as 15 pets, one of them running leadership pool! Why do brutes have High hps and high damage? They're scrapper/tanks. Perhaps you haven't played cov, I know I hadn't til recently and I was shocked. Only certain blappers, reflex scraps, and possibly firekins pwn in pvp, for villains its almost automatic to pwn. btw as defined by Paragonwiki Defiance is "As a Blaster loses health, he begins to unleash his true power in a last ditch display of Defiance. The less health he has, the more damage he deals, and the more accurate his attacks become." I.e he's at death's door. So your saying a near dead blaster using an interruptible skill is supposed to scare a stalker? or a dominator? Have you seen these guys?
" Domination
Nothing delights a Dominator more than inflicting pain. When a Dominator attacks, his sadistic nature grows. When your Domination bar is over 90% you can activate this power to unleash his true potential. Your control powers will typically last 50% longer and will more easily Dominate stronger opponents. Additionally, you will fully recharge your Endurance and increase the damage to all your attacks by 75%. Domination lasts for 90 seconds and recharges in 200 seconds. The recharge can be reduced by self and ally buffs, but cannot be slotted with enhancements.
Domination protects the villain from Knockback/Knockup, Repel, Disorient, Hold, Sleep, Immobilize, Fear, and Confuse effects, and can be activated even while suffering from them to break the villain free.
Domination doubles the magnitude of the villain's own Disorient, Hold, Sleep, Immobilize, Fear, and Confuse effects for their normal durations, then keeps them going at normal magnitude for half that amount of time longer. Debuffs and other secondary effects are not improved.
A Dominator's Domination level is shown by an orange bar between Endurance and Experience Points. It rises each time he attacks. It rises faster if the Dominator has more teammates. This is a mild effect with one or two teammates, but on a large team Domination can be brought from 0 to over 90% with fewer than ten attacks. The Domination level falls very slowly when not used. It's automatically reduced to zero 90 seconds after Domination is activated. "
"For #7 CoV required to use bases since it is a feature OF CoV. Like how Jewelcrafting is a feature of The Burning Crusade expansion in WoW." K np, but I know I personally found it offensive that I paid for a game and would've had to buy another game to use a feature in the game I bought. I mean truth be told, cov/coh is just software from the same company so where the feature was added, and how, is up to the developers. Naturally if my goal was to further push the community in the way I suggest, making cov a requirement would be strategically intelligent. Especially since the majority of people play coh to live out superhero fantasies and hence are extremely nice and helpful as a whole and prolly wouldn't play cov without a little incentive, but ok, we can definately attribute it as you say.
"#13 the Hellions have a real occult symbol because... they follow the occult. Early missions explain how they have made deals with various dark entities in return for their firey powers." Isn't that part of my point? That Cryptic/NCsoft use real occult imagery and ideologies in their games? Couldn't the symbol just as easily been a fiery floor with the word hellions above it? but no, the hellions sold their souls for power it seems and the player, unbeknowst to most, is introduced to the satanic symbol, the goat of mendes.
"At Point 14 you say witches hats are the "only" quest clothing you can get. This is incorrect as during Christmas people could get santa hats and suits. Also during the Valentines Day even people could unlock the toga and laurel wreath hat." I actually say one of the only, but even then what I meant is during regular gameplay. Non-eventwise it was the only piece til i9.
"Now at #17 I could counter why do some villain costumes look so white and angelic? Simple, player personal preference. You can make your hero/villain look however dark or nice you want to." I know the player chooses, I'm saying there is imbalance, way more dark imagery than good. Not to mention blurring the line between good and evil is part of the occult agenda.
"For point 18 it is because players enjoyed co-op missions previously so Cryptic put them in the game. With the Invasion the lore is simple, the Rikti want everyone dead or enslaved regardless if they are heroes or villains. We are fighting a common enemy." I wasn't referring to the Rikti event because every event I can remember there are mishes together in or thru pocket d, most requiring u to group together. I don't know about you but I hate villains and have no desire to team with them. I would've liked an event where we actually fight, or at least compete for something, we're good, they're evil, can we fight? Having played so much pvp before I retired, it woulda been a wipeout I can tell ya that. We'd have been pwnd.
"Not sure how you define "strongest" scrappers/defenders are dark based. Go up against Banished Pathenon or CoT ghosts and dark powers are weaker. Regen is probably the best solo scrapper secondary, less downtime. Defenders are usually defined by their primary which is uncommonly dark since that set's heal power requires a successful tohit." Dark defenders have highest heal in the game with succesful hit, the only def with group rez, the only def with a pet, when added to their various drains, saps, slows and holds makes them part troller (with a blaster secondary). If they choose dark as a secondary ,it comes with 2 extreme damage, 2 moderate attacks (1 fast recharge) 1 moderate dot 1 High dot and various holds and drains. If it were a blaster, like the others, it would be the strongest. As for scrappers, the damage + saps + holds seems to set them apart. Not to mention I've heard dark scrappers say they can even farm effectively at high lvls.
"Finally on point 20, where do you get that Dragon = Devil? Traditional sybolism for The Devil is a goat or possibly a satyr. Dragons themselves in both western and eastern cultures aren't necessarily good or evil, depends on what kind they are and what time period the tales are from." Revelation 20:2 "And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years," Western civilization has depicted the devil many ways through the centuries, but one of the most well known is that of the Red dragon. Also well known is the serpent, the 7 headed 10 horned beast of revelations, and of course others. http://www.snopes.com/rumors/wtcface.asp
Man o man what a lengthy reply. My fingers hurt. Ok, but basically as I said, even if your points were valid the uniformity and recurrence of these occult themes could not be coincidental. I have seen so many in character creation, the various portals or even the buildings it could not be by accident. The word occult actually means hidden and Cryptic means encoded. So the question is really, are all these things, and the ones mentioned earlier that all point to occult themes and images, coincidental? Well as a person that believes in truth, and evidence and the fact that once is an accident, twice is a habit and 3 times is a trend, i'd have to say that there is no question these influences are being placed on purpose. Tell me, is that any different from the rest of the entertainment industry? If its not swords and sorcery in your mmos, its paganism and pentagrams on your album covers http://www.av1611.org/666/rock_666.html Why does Jay-Z throw up that occult hand gesture and fearlessly call himself the name of God Almighty. Why does he make songs like Lucifer and D'evils? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oRyrhJdwCw Why did 3 6 mafia (as in triple 6) have its own reality show? That nobody watched . Why does Russel Simmons pray to an idol of Kali (bringer of death and destruction in buddhism). Why did the members of led zeppelin admit to worshiping the devil in their book Fallen angel? (summarized as a detailed effort to present to the reader the facts of Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin’s propagation of the teachings of Black Magician Aleister Crowley and the satanic, magical cult he founded, the “Argenteum Astrum) Why is Aleister Crowley on the Sgt Pepper Album as one of the Beatles heroes? Lotsa others http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/Evils%20in%20America/Rock-n-Roll/satanic_quotes.htm
You can believe what you want, but for me the truth should be based on evidence. If I knew nothing of the occult, and absolutely refused to believe anyone could believe in it, or more insidiously, try and push it on us, I might find it crazy at first too, but the preponderance of evidence, not just in game but in life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYRfYAieoqs would make me wonder," Ok if there is no purpose to all these coincidences, why do they all occur?" If you think about it, the only historical figure the mainstream media consistently tries to prove was a fake is Jesus Christ. Why? They can't say He doesn't exist because there's more evidence He existed than anyone else who has ever lived, so they simply try to, on a daily basis, discredit Him. Strange to you too? Tell me why all this money and effort to smear His name? You see them trying to discredit anyone else?
Anyway, if you look at the evidence in the context of some of the other things I mentioned and research the methods occultists have used forever, what I say may seem to be more plausible in your mind, because the fact is, when it comes to the world as it really is , we lack the facts. Keep an open mind and see what you find.

I don't think comparing the burning crusade to cov is a good comparison. you can purchase ONLY cov and play the game. can you ONLY purchase the burning crusade and play the game? no. because TBC is an expansion, while COV is a stand-alone game.
i still believe that is a huge marketing FAIL on the part of this game.
if COV was truly supposed to be a STAND ALONE game, then they should've just added bases hero side on the issue when cov came out. so even in their marketing of the game (cov), they were misleading about it. the part i highlighted in red, i totally agree with - total garbage on the part of ncsoft.
back on the OP -- if you left around i4/5; then, yes, there's TONS more ingame at the moment.
there's COV for starters; but what you see in cov (with a couple of minor exceptions + the rikti war zone) is all that you had at the release of COV.
you've got hellion arsonists and supa-troll ravers to deal with, wandering around causing mayhem. you've got police-radio missions (blue version of villain mayhem missions -- you either stop a bank robbery (blue) or rob a bank (red), with lots of side missions in the instance).
RWZ - rikti war zone is almost as good a feature as the inventions. invention enhancements, along with the sets and uniques, make your toon quite powerful and can make twin toons VERY different (i.e. same level, pri/sec, powers and slotting; but with different sets and uniques).
vet rewards can be nice. some of the levels of vet rewards are just lame/stupid; but some are really nice. the angel/devil wings are cool. permanent ghost slaying ax OR sands of mu (for all your toons, past/present/future) are pretty sweet. as are a few other items.
no switching from villain to hero, or vice versa. not sure how they'd pull it for a few classes (necromancy masterminds comes to mind, with their horde of undead minions. "hey statesman, i, the Zombie Lord, would like to help you on this task force you have." or "look mommy, it's the hero zombie lord. oh my god oh my god oh my god, did that zombie just vomit acid on that poor gang member and then eat his brains?????"). plus all the patron power pools EXCEPT for MM, give a controller-type pet to the villain. most are human(oid), some are robotic. i could see the robotic ones switching over, and maybe the human(oid) ones could be considered sidekicks to the villain and are sorta following their boss' lead?
i11 has a lot of promise, depending on how they implement it. it could be a parrallel world or alternate timeline. either way, i hope they have it as a permanent thing and not just some task force, i.e. there's a bunch of zones (fairly identical, physically, to all the zones ingame currently) and you portal over to that dimension at the behest of some group, akin to vanguard, to try to set things "back to normal"; because it could adversely affect our dimension/timeline, or something.
so while the red side has been seriously neglected over the past two years. if you haven't played since it came out; then go get the "good vs. evil" edition of the game, upgrade your old account with it, get the nifty "jump pack" for all your toons (and i think also the pocket D transporter), the two free costume sets, and unlock coh and cov for about $10. if you lost your old account, you can still just start up an account with the good v. evil pack. now that i think about it, you could log into your old account and just purchase the gve upgrade and download it that way! that's 7 or 8 new zones/SFs/etc and 5 whole new ATs for you to play around with.
plus, if you don't want to play villains, you still get the items i referenced and you now have access to the supergroup base content!

I do have to admit tho... that is some Mel Gibson movie material. A little bit of brain-wash and Julia Roberts... we have ourselves a blockbuster.

P.S. The primary reason I believe there are so many occult symbols in the game (and there are) is because Cryptic had originally created a group of bad guys called "The Fifth Column", which was loosely based on Germany's Nazi regime led by Hitler himself. (For those who don't know, Hitler was heavily involved in the occult and the Swastika - which came to symbolize the Nazi regime on all its flags and banners - was itself an occultic symbol taken from Indian mythology).
The Fifth Column was removed from the game because Cryptic wanted to release CoH in Europe, but Germany was going to ban sales of the game there if The Fifth Column remained in it.
The Fifth Column was replaced by at least one other group (the shape-shifting wolves group, can't recall the name right now) but the occult symbols remained. It was apparently easier just to change the "skin" on a group of bad guys rather than to code out every single reference to them.
So in a perfect world would the occult references be gone? One would like to think so, but this - again - says more about the rush to get a game out (CoH) from the devs than it does about any desire on their part to turn kids playing the game into Satanists. (City of Villains, OTOH, may be a completely different story, and while I know that game was introduced to "enhance" the PvP RP elements of the game, CoV is an embarrassment. As a parent, I'd want my kid role-playing a hero, NOT a villain).
YMMV.
"The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion." -Edmund Burke
Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?"
(Psalm 94:16)
My theory was: given where they were in the CoV development at the time, they worried about a game that would align players with a Nazi faction. Running missions for Arachnos or the Council is one thing, but helping the 5th Column take over the world would make for some pretty bad press.
(Also, devs keep saying the 5th Column is coming back, for whatever that's worth.)
To the OP, the game is now, and ever will be, fighting first and foremost. But I think there's a lot for you to try. (Heck, even the oft-criticized Defiance power for Blasters makes them a lot more fun for me.) Also, I continually advise people to try varied characters, as the differences between ATs/Powersets are remarkable.
