Wow... Yahoo! really didnt do their research. I'm kinda interested to see what Bioware puts out as i'm sure everyone else here is, but most of those titles are either VaporWare or they've just not impressed anyone. at all. Personally my two interest are Aion and AoC or War... still havent decided which i care for more. TR i didnt care for at all and i got the impression that not many others did either and PotBS... well its still under NDA but all I'll say is that i wasnt impressed. the rest of those titles tho... well everyone has displayed dismay with these titles. my secret hope tho is that STO devs pull their heads out of their asses and get to work on what players want, albeit they have a hard saga to live up to.
"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."
i have to agree with all of your replies. the only games i see capable of achieving enough economic success to even appear on WoW's radar are WAR and imo to a lesser extent AoC because of their preexisting fanbases.

STO could attract a large audience of done right. Right now the only good sci-fi MMORPG is EVE and that's made for a very particular type of audience. Most people want to be able to hoof it on foot. I guess that's the catch with sci-fi MMORPGs though, basically having to make two games in one (ground and space). I thought SWG did this with JtL quite well back in the day.
WAR has a good shot of being really really big. Will it be as big as WoW? I doubt that. World of Warcraft has the very distinct attribute of appealing to both the Western MMOers and the Eastern MMOers. Most games can not do that. The markets are so totally different that they either get one or the other usually.
WAR can (and I think will) overtake WoW in the Western market, but I do not think it will touch WoW at all in the East.
Aion on the other hand might make a huge dent into the Eastern Market share that WoW currently has.
But honestly any game that isn't as easy to farm for like WoW is won't ever sell as many subscriptions or boxes. The fact that World of Warcraft has so many boxes sold each month is due to all the of the farmers buying new copies after they get banned.
Well, I agree that some of those MMORPGs will not emerge as a dominant force. HOwever, I dont agree with Yahoo's premis for the article... "Life After Warcraft?" . Whos to say that Warcraft will die?
I, too, believe there will be a large player exodus from WoW ..likely to AoC or WAR. Who knows, perhaps one of those new games will surprise everyone. But WoW will be around for a long time. Heck UO and EQ1 are still up.
Also , one of things players often do when they tire of a new MMORPG ...is return to an old MMORPG for a while. I hate to say it, but all of us who kicked WoW may find ourselves back in Azeroth if AoC or WAR (or some other game) finally grows stale.

I don't know. I think once people make the plunge to leave warcraft and their comfort zone we won't see many going back. I think it will be that initial leaving that will cause problems.
Oh look, they listed crap, crap, crap, crap crap, crap, (page 2) and even more crap... MMO gaming is officially dead....
so pessimistic
pleasant surprise to see some constructive discussion on this topic. i for one am interested to see how all this pans out from an economic stand point. we are dealing with a ferocious and exponentially growing market here.

Yahoo obviously didn't look too hard for their 'MMORPG research'. No Darkfall on there, for one thing. Next week,Google announces it's top 5 upcoming MMORPG's! <laughs>
That is because even Yahoo can spot vaporware when they see it.

Oh my god, stop talking about Darkfall! Anyone whos been around here knows this game will NEVER BE RELEASED! haven't you read the huge scams that were going on with this game a year or so ago!
Anyways back to topic. I think they did a fine synopsis of upcoming games. Just because you guys are completely jaded and are of the mentality "everything sucks" does not mean everyone else feels the same way.

LoL what a Noob!!!
Anyway ireally thought the WAR review was pretty funny.
Warhammer Online
An offshoot of the near-legendary tabletop wargame (of the lead figurines and tombstone-like rulebooks ilk), Warhammer Online separates its players into two warring factions, much like World of Warcraft. Blizzard's universe was always (ahem) heavily inspired by the considerably older Warhammer setting, and that's sure to be reflected in EA Mythic's creation. In keeping with its warlike setting, though, Warhammer Online features a much more detailed representation of the struggle between the two alliances.
One thing's for sure: Games Workshop stores around the world know exactly how to separate adolescent boys from their pocket money. If Warhammer Online can duplicate the Games Workshop experience in a virtual world, it might be the MMOG with the best shot at stealing Blizzard's crown. Expect to hear a lot more about it as it approaches release, early next year.

Seems like a reasonable list to me, though personaly I would tweek it a little. Not that those will all be good games, but they hit the major players. And good job mentioning Biowares game, Yahoo doesnt seem quite as clueless as some of you make them out to be.
and my favorite part:
"Star Trek Online
It's Star Trek. It's online. How can you go wrong? Judging by the long, long line of terrible video games Gene Roddenberry's creation has spawned, very wrong indeed."
Everyone is bashing Yahoo on their list, but honestly some of the most hyped are in there like WAR, GaH, TR, AoC, STO. Those are the MMOs that matter for the future, not these tiny ones that gather a few hundred fanbois and fizzle out. As with many people, I'm pumped to see what Bioware has to offer! I'm hoping like hell it is Star Wars Knights of the Republic Online; however I highly doubt it will be:(
At this point I think WAR is the game of the future that will contend with WoW. There is a lot riding on Bioware's upcoming MMO. Give us a hint for God's sake!

none of the mmogs in that list will do anything to wow. maybe they will get some frustrated wow-vets, but wow is self-hyping itself..
Clones of Wow wont be succesfull, only niche-mmos can. Inside their niche, of course.
Half of those games are already dead.

I think in western markets the game that is picking up the most speed is Everquest II. And it simply because they are listening to players.
