Poll: Ressurection... what's the plan?

I wrote a little bit about ressurections in another thread, but this is a huge issue for any MMO and deserves it own thread. So, what are your thoughts on ressurections in a mech game? My preferance would be to take a leaf out of Eve's book I think. Insurance for your mech, and clones for your avatar... I can't imagine a corpse run in a sci-fi game like this really. I mean, when you got there your mech would be still burning and unusable.

Any ideas?

Well we know there is some sort of clone system but there is also a permadeath factor (dont know much about it so i cant go into details). We also know that salvaging will be a big part of the game but it we take a long time for certain things. (quicker you can get friends, allys, yourself back to you mech the less you will lose )

So most likely it will be corpse run with repairing / rearming the mech

I'm not going to answer or take part in the discussion in this thread, to help avoid biasing the results (I think it is a good poll by the way).

But we're going to monitor it (as well as these forums) to see what people would like, or come to expect.

Insurance and cloning. Leave the permadeath for the sucker who forgot, or couldn't pay for, the insurance.

Yeah... up to a point I agree with you. I don't ever want permadeath in my MMOs, because I invest myself into my avatars and want to play for many years. Dying permanently and restarting is a turn off for me.

BUT and it is a big but, in this game we have TWO avatars in play at all times (sort of). The real avatar in FOA is your human pilot--he/she is supposed to be you. We have been told that in the phased roll-out of the game your human avatar will come to mean more and more as time goes on, but in phase 1 it will be all about your mech in pvp. I love mech battles, so I am more than happy with that, but it does mean all my energy goes into the mech not the pilot.

So, we could still have permadeath for those who like that idea, by destroying mechs on the battlefield so that the pilot dies if he does not eject. If that were to happen in phase 1, I don't think you would hear too many howls of outrage if you had clones lined up ready to take the dead pilot's place. I think players are more likely to be upset about the loss of their mech than the pilot in phase 1

The problem with this is that the game changes as phase 2 rolls in, and more with phase 3. In phase 3, I don't think people will be at all happy with permadeath of pilots, because the nature of the game in p3 has more PVE in it where you run around as your human avatar more (not exclusively a I understand it.) If true, I think people will identify more with the pilot than the mech. The mech becomes your mount then.

In games, mechanics like ressing are fundamental. I would think that such things are set early and unchanging, so that whatever happens when you die in phase1 will remain true in p2 and p3. I think Eve's cloning and insurance is about the best you can have in a game where dying is a certainty and high tech is a staple of the game.

    What do you guys think?

It seems no one has an opinion either way about the resurection system. That surprises me, especially considering the many FFA/permadeath posts for other games.

Is it that this game like EVE is aimed and a certain niche and that not enough people want mech games?

I hope not, because I want great big battles in a single massive world. For those that don't read the FOA website, the map for this game is over 100 times larger than other well known games currently out there.

I think I'm right in saying that the servers are clustered so that the game is a single universe, not lots of little copies of the world on different servers.

I chose clones and insurance.  If you didnt have insurance though you should have to part out whats left of the destroyed mech and get a new one.  Maybe you could have a garage with other mechs you have bought or assembled from parts youve collected.  Im not sure if the context of the game would allow for garages but it would be fun.  I would hope it could be something like Armored Core concerning the mechs and parts for them.

Clones and Ensurance.  but I really really dislike the idea of your clone being worse every time you resurrect.   people I've shown this game to have said the same thing

how the mech (or whatever other vehicle you might have had) is "ressurected" would/should really depend more on how they are manufactured and distributed,  but I think it would be a little silly if your vehicle "ressurected" along side you

but on a side note. I hope infantry and other vehicles are taken into as much or almost as much consideration as the mechs are.  it's different strenghts working as one that bring a video game battle field to life

I haven't been on here as much as I should keep up with these responses, sorrry about that but our official forums keep me busy also.

You are a bit mistaken in what you believe to be resurrection and insurance.  Depending on phase, players will have mechs, then avatars then ships to play inside. When during phase 1 you die, you are cloned as a human your human clone is the one that is degradaded, not the mech. That would be proposterous, it's metal, unless your'e Genoma that is ( hehe).

The mechs take money and repair costs to fix if damaged or if they are lost, hopefully insurance will cover the costs but usually that's not always the case....just like modern insurance...you may or may not recoup all yoru loss. That's the plan anyway....why not join us on the official forums and discuss in in more detail.

I say no rez.  If you'r mech is going down, that is what the ejection button is for.   As far as clones I don't have a big issue with it, however your mech should be salvagable if you can get back to it with your friends or another mech.  Spoils go to the victor.

Should be like EVE - Clones and Insurance. And you clone should  NOT get worse each time. In MMO's being able to recover to where you used to be both financially and skill-wise is important.

Are they serious about perma-death? EVE has shown us that it is not needed and it is possible to have strong consequences for death.
