The people behind this mod deserve the chance to write their own ticket. They took the best Multiplayer FPS(BF:1942) and made it 10X better. I spent 2 years straight playing nothing but the same $0 monthly game. That's replay value for you. I had some mad Lil' Bird skills btw.
The best games, in my opinion, are the sandbox ones. BF:1942 was the first sandbox FPS. Desert Combat expanded on it but BF2 brought it down quite a few notches. Any game where I can bail out of a helicopter 200 ft up, parachute on to the top of a moving tank, then leap off it after dropping C4 just in time to blow the crap out of it: is a great game. What other FPS gives you such a command of the air, land, and sea? I know BF2 has planes and choppers, but they seem a little too.... heavy and restrictive. Also, the graphics were a drag on gameplay. Even with great Frames Per Second BF2 was never as smooth as BF:1942.
The best MP FPS is, in my opinion, Soldier of Fortune 2. It has been four years since its release, and you will still find an active community with numerous clans and competitive matches.
The graphics are still okay, the sounds are okay, and the play is great. It can be heavily modded (I run a Star Wars mod with sounds and visuals, my roommate runs a modified standard look and sound). It runs punkbuster, however, people sometimes cheat, as with any game I suppose. There are several well laid out maps that can be a lot of fun to play. I suggest running game type 'Infiltration' on the MRU or T@ server.
If you lack skill with FPSs, then I suggest avoiding SOF2. It is not easy, and it will take some time to be average. The reason for this is that it is a very precise game. You don't spray and pray, you don't run into the open and randomly take people out. Instead, you take your time, you aim with precision, and you fire in a controlled burst. Because of this, it is a slower game than most are used to, but the tactics are unlike anything you will find on the market today.
I purchased Enemy Territory: Quake Wars last night... I played for a couple of hours and then went back to SOF2. I like precision, and if I see something that looks like you can jump on it, or over it, then I like to be able to actually jump on it, or over it.
Anyway, probably more information than you care for, but there you have it.
Team Fortress 2, in moderation and with a group of friends. Planetside following closely behind!
And yes.. I play Battlefield series on a regular basis, same with other steam games. But these two are the ones I look forward to most on my way home from work. Matter of fact I'm looking forward to them right now. 10 minutes of frag time, that should be enough to satisfy my crave.
