Yes, the most evil thing that can happen to you is getting tackled by a minimatar newbie flying a rifter.
Because they are new, they do things you dont expect. and when theres a rifter tackling you with a newbie piloting it, you can be sure the evil guys who told the newbie what to do wont be far out..
You can sit in the biggest non-capital ships within 60 days. true. But i prefer people in smaller ships for pvp. easily trained in two weeks to be ubar...battleships are nice damagedealers, but imho they suck without proper support. and those are the ones in the small ships :P
Well truthfully, my first EVE character is part of a stealth fleet so he's trained up in Stealth bombers at the moment and I'll next be working my way towards HACS and Command ships. Took me about 3.5 months to get to this point since I took a detour and skilled up a ratting Raven as it my primary cash earner.
But 0.0 is an unforgiving place, and to really defend your bases sometimes Capitol ships show up...which is when you break out the Sniping Battleships. And they don't fly solo..... like someone mentioned...very specialized role and just like in a real fleet you don't run with out some support.
As to comments about WOW being able to reach max level in a month...that isn't really true for the average new player...it took me about 16 days played to get my first pally to 50..... sure, by my 5th alt I had cut that by more than half... (I take my time) but then again you find out what i did...WOW's pve based raiding end game really sort of sucks.... (well, its a bit pointless, at least to me) and heck, no matter what you accomplish there, expect Blizzard to wipe it all out and give you the "oppportunity" to re-do it all again.......fun.... not....
I'm not trying to slam WOW, I had some good times in the day..but I didn't enjoy the end game...I'm sure some folks really do...but I don't run around posting flame posts on WOW forums just because I don't care for it....

I think its funny that a lot of the nubs here equate success in Eve with flying a battleship. As if that one factor alone = success
then others go on to say its not worth playing because you wont "catch up" to people who have been playing longer because skills train over time. They completely gloss over the fact that skills are capped and only certain skills are used with certain ships. Meaning, it doesnt matter how many sp you have accumulated, but how theyre placed, what ship you are flying at the time, how its fitted and how all this relates to how the person spent their sp.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
Um, I think you just proved the opposite, who the heck wants to spend 3 months to get somewhere in a game?
In WOW or EQ2 I can get to max level in a month and be raiding, and be top on the server if i was so inclined
I log into games for escape not to spend months.. but to each their own.
Let's take an average newbie world of warcraft player.
First character to 70: Roughly 12-15 days played, if they wish to explore any content. Let's say they're fairly casual, 4 hours played per day. If it takes 'em 13 days in total, they'll be lvl 70 within 78 days, or roughly 2,6 months. Now, they're still clueless about their class, and most likely even the game. You're not joining a Black Temple raiding guild straigth away, forget about it. They won't be dragging your half-blue/half green geared character with 'em.
So you'll have to start gearing up. First step, Karazhan/Gruul's lair raiding guild. 4-8 weeks, depending on the guild(Add time if the guild have been running Gruul's for a while and uses DKP), you might start getting a decent amount of epic gear. If you worked on a tradeskill, you might get some epics from there. Now you're fairly experienced with 25-man raiding, you can move on to Magtheridons lair. Then SSC/TK. Then Mt. Hyjal, and finally BT. Grats, you're now in the top server raiding guildies, having spent perhaps 4-5 months MINIMUM.
EVE? 3 months of playing, and you can fly a battleship. You don't even need to play everyday - And before you're able to fly a battleship, you're still capable of being a valueable tool in PvP after just a few days worth of training.
I always loved the IDEA of Eve, but on all my attempts at playing it I lost interest very quickly. I really wish I could find it in myself to keep playing, but...
Playing the game in my head using my imagination is great. I wouldn't play anything else if what I see in my head were real. In reality though, the game for me is reduced choosing an option to learn, click an icon, and sit back for hours/days/minutes waiting to choose the next. As for flying around and doing things, again I see in my head a great simulation of flying warships and traders, but what we really get is screen filled with data that i interpret and click a button, then sit back and wait for the game to play FOR me. When its done, i click another button and wait for the game to PLAY FOR ME again.
I am tempted to try Eve again at least 3 times a year showing I guess how much I want to play a sci-fi MMO, but when I go to the site I quickly remember my reasons for not playing and click away.
Eve is a niche game and long may it live... but sadly it will go on without me.
I recently started playing EVE, about 3 months ago, and I'm flying a cruiser and in 3 days I'll be flying a battlecruiser. I have to say though, the path I took there was bumpy. For instance, I was going for a maximum outfitted Stealthbomber ( total cost around 50-80 milion ), but my cruiser can't support that amount of money, so I'll have to upgrade from that to something larger first. Which is a pity, because I really like to play a supportive role in an "Oh WTF" situation, when playing guard for my corps miners in a low-security region.
In my imagination, nothing more fun than dropping out of stealth on top of a ship, nailing them down with the threat of a couple bombs up their ass, including possibly warpdisrupters and ECM(targeting jammers).
However, my corp also feels that I won't be of any use to them in a stealthbomber, so currently that plan has been set back a bit :P
I'm now making my way to the Brutix ( Battlecruiser) In which I hope to be able to do lvl 2 missions slightly faster than I'm doing now ( I even went back to level 1 quality 15 missions, because they pay better, in time ).
The pro's of EVE are, that I do not need to be online to progress my character. To some of you, this might sound silly, but in reality, how many of you have to wait 3 hours, before being able to enter an instance, where you might not even get anything(WoW) ?
I can play anything I want, while still leveling up, in a way.
EVE is great for me so far and I intend to be active in PvP, or rather Piracy *cough* and I'll probably lose a couple 100 milion getting the touch of it, but I think that's the purpose of the game, explore your own boundaries.
About time too. Eve had probably the single worst and buggiest tutorial of any MMO I have ever tried. The dev's at CCP really don't make a lot of effort with this game. They must be sitting around all day laughing.
Yea i hear they had another bash recently at making the damn thing work.
Could be worse tho. Back in my day the tutorial was almost non-existant.
All it involeved was yu appearing in the middle of nowhere with a single veldspar asteroid and a NPC drone orbiting you. You were then taught how to operate a mining laser and how to target and destroy the drone. Thats it you had to work out how to find your way to the station to recieve the second part of the tutorial
Took me 30 minuites to work that out.

Currently one hour from getting my first Pilgrim, feel free to blow me out of the sky!
