Ryzom Closing

Well we have just had word that Ryzom is closing and is in liquidation. Good old Gameforge has not bothered to communicate to their clients/customers - the people that help pay their salaries, for one whole year basically. Even now they dont have an official post for "us" clients - they allow us to know from customer liason officer (unpaid "helper" of course" on our forum - the same day it dies. They have given three weeks "free period" before it is shut down.

Taking into account that many people have re-newed their subs for upto 6 months dduring the middle of last month - these people will not be getting a refund. And as the server stands - we cannot even log into play as it is too laggy - and when I say too laggy I mean you cant even move.

Conclusion - be ver very wary of a company like Gameforge.

Edited to add: This is just a personal opinion as to my view point of Gameforge activity - of course there are many satisfied customers out there that enjoy their products.

Did not like the game, but still sad to see it go.

Feel for those who do love it.

Perhaps it will get a reprieve.

If so, that really truly sucks.

Not only a sad final end to a decent game but very shady practices by Gameforge as well.

    Edited for:

So it is true--terrible. Will it get a third chance at life?

It is a shame that Ryzom will soon be gone, unless someone resurrects it again. Though I never got into it, it seemed like quite a novel world.

To be honest, though, this closure was not unexpected. The game bankrupted the first company and it was rather foolish, though brave, for another company to pick it up. Clearly they failed and are now also bankrupt. Ryzom simply lacks the mass appeal necessary for financial success in its current incarnation.

It would almost be funny if a third company grabbed it and bankrupted, too. It would be like one of those cheesy horror movies with a bazillion sequels. By now, however, the game has so much negative publicity and financial ruin associated with it that no one will touch it with a ten-foot pole.

That sucks. It was a good game.I had no idea they were doing that bad. I think they are giving up a bit easily (though I don't know all the details). Imo they should have at least made an item mall (or something). That would have gotten some more cash imo. Well I hope someone will buy it from them.

Kinda sad to hear. I have once briefly played Saga of Ryzom and met some truly wonderful people from the community there the game itself has been low on subscribers since day one. It's a niche game that has survived this long in itself is a miracle. Rest in peace Ryzom.

It's true they could have converted to free subscription model with an item mall or advertisement model but I don't think the current owners of the ryzom license has much faith in the game's income generating performance and it probably is too late for them.

In fact going into liquidaire in france means the company has officially declared bankrupcy. The term is called recievership.

Quite sad to hear this. I think Ryzomes failure was not that the game wasnt good. It was. But that most people cant break out of the high fantasy mentality... " What , I cant be an Elf, Gnome or Dwarf?". The sad truth is that most gamers seem to lack imagination, something that Ryzome offered in abundance. Go WOW!

that is a shame. I didn't go much on it myself but it seemed to have its fans and was really quite innovative especially with the Ryzom Ring.

Very sad news, I have played it on and off but never really got into it. But it is a good game and a really nice sandbox game which there are too few of. I think the reason I could not get into it was the mix of sci-fi and fantasy, I would have liked it better had it been true sci-fi I think.

Also, even if it was good of them not to have the old boring dwarves, elves etc. the races they do have are somewhat bland and boring which does not help with the immersion (well, my opinions of course and I kind of like Vanguard so maybe I should not be taken too seriously).

Well, i would have thought they would have to refund those who paid for months they are not going to be able to recieve.

But then again, i was unknowingly paying for 6 months of EQ2 and didn't sign in at all, which they could have easily varified, and i was told there was no chance of a refund which i was disappointed with...

This is not good news and I'll be sorry to see it go, I have an inactive account there and stopped playing when my computer couldn't handle the game any longer. I switched to a laptop and was looking forward to getting a desktop system that could handle the Ryzom and reactivating my account, but I guess that won't be happening now.

I would hope that someone will pick this game up and keep it going, the community deserves that at least. Companies need to realise that a commitment exisits both ways, they should make the game playable by allowing indivduals to host a local lan community or something. I wish EA had done that with Earth and Beyond, I'd still be playing it if they had. I any event sorry the hear this news.

  • OBK1OBK1 Member Posts: 637

Oh yes, I miss Earth and Beyond too :(

When they close these things down the least they could do is release the code for free so some clever community members could pick it up...well never going to happen in this day and age...

  • nomadiannomadian Member Posts: 3,490

agree there^. I think its a waste when developers have spent hours on a game, and a person has bought a game for that to dissipate into nothing.

If you used a credit card recently to extend, all you do is dispute the charge with your bank, banks don't like companies that fold.

Surprised the original company didnt make any money selling the license for their software. Tis a shame.

Man, that is sad.. I was playing the limited content version for awhile. I only stopped due to PW finally going beta, which I had been waiting for months on. This game truly was one of the few that kind of stood out, especially in customization. It had a wonderfully fun excavating feature as well, it was the first game I played where you could actually adjust peices of the body rather than just choose chunks. Too bad.

I never got a chance to play it, but sad to see it go.

Oh well, if we get rid of a few more (lots more) MMOs, then we can go back to the old days and have only a couple to pick from.  Which means more population in game = P

Hah, I see someone is trying to get their post count up. I hardly think the lack of population is due to alot of games available, considering if it's bad people don't play it.

Wasn't Ryzom released as open source?

If it was then there will probably be several private servers available within 6 months or so. I know this site doesn't like private servers, but if the game is no longer supported then it kinda falls into the abandonware category. If someone isn't publishing a game, it's not piracy. It's not my fault that they decided not to port the game to a modern operating system and republish thus maintaining an opportunity to make some more of my hard earned cash.....

No the nerax game engine was open source. Before gameforge bought the game and assets from nerax there was a group of people that got together and called it the free ryzom campain in order to purchase the game and assets and make it open source. Unfortunately gameforge made a better bid and the campain was unsuccessful.

    Playing Fallen Earth.

Awww.  That's a real shame.  I liked SoR and though it wasn't for me for the long haul (I'm a quest junkie unfortunately) I was keeping half an eye on it as it was genuinly fun to play witht he best community in the genre.

  • JenuvielJenuviel Member Posts: 960

It's definitely too bad the game had to end. I never liked the combat in it, but I always loved the world, and the skill system was second to none. I pre-ordered the game way back when and enjoyed it until the first big update. I left at that point, but I always hoped the game would last. It was a different take on a lot of what's out there, and diversity's always a good thing.

hmmm looks like more people are going to retreat to WurmOnline and EvE-Online.

edit>  and maybe something like horizons from what I glanced at it they had a few decent systems that might be close enough for some people.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Maybe those have systems similar to Ryzom's -- but as far as I've seen none are even close to the feeling of a living breathing world.
