They've only had 1 really awesome game to date...KotoR who incidentally was made by Bioware. They have had good games of which is giving them a boost as I really didn't think any of them were memorable, just imo...not great games. Even KotoR 2 wasn't as good as the first as it was made by another gaming co. who actually used what Bioware had done already code/structure wise.
Reading stuff likes this actually sizzles my brain. Lucasarts was one of the few game developing and publishing companies that can be credited with popularizing PC gaming. They have absolute classics under their hood - stuff like Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and the Monkey Island games are timeless and Maniac Mansion, Sam and Max Hit the Road and a couple of the Indiana Jones games are top notch, too. In fact, it's nigh impossible to talk about adventure gaming history without mentioning them quite a few times. When it comes to other genres, they may not have as strong a record, but they're not limp, either: TIE Fighter is a huge classic in the space sim genre and Dark Forces was not a bad FPS at all. They may have lost their touch in the last 10 years or so, but they are a huge part of PC gaming history. When you go through PC gaming history era-by-era, game-by-game, you can see how they've left their mark on multiple genres. Saying they have never performed well is just cruel. Credit where credit is due, please.
P.S.: I hope Bioware's MMO will be a Forgotten Realms one, but I'm aware that's not a very high a probability.
Well, let it sizzle your brain....I could care less, each game you mentioned were several out of maybe over a 100 games they have had their hand on. And the games you mentioned may have meant something to you...not I. If you want to credit them...fine....do so. But for every game you can quote as so-called popularizing PC gaming, (are you serious?) I can find plenty others that did it better. Then again...with you trying to praise them...I should just go and praise EA for the same reason. SOE for the same reason.
because you cant take share from "Wow Money" because "Wow" is already eating all of it The best money making formula in the MMO indusrty right now: Bioware + Star Wars
and they are smart enough to realize that.
As it stands right now I don't think there is another company in a better position to make a Star Wars MMO other than Bioware. I've heard they said they didn't want to make a game using someone else's IP, so there's a chance they'll just make an MMO using their own IP. However there would clearly be big money leaning them towards a Star Wars MMO. And they clearly are smart enough to see how much money could be made off the disgruntled SWG vets as well as KOTOR and regular Star Wars fans. As long as their not as dumb as smed and think they could eat away at the WoW pie. Just stick to making their game and leave WoW alone. If you make it they will come!

I'm sure everyone wants "WoW money". Bioware however is deservingly so one of the best RPG game makers in the industry. I believe they would put a signature spin on the MMO world like other out of the box thinkers like the guys over at arenanet, or the guys who made Sword of The New World.
Bioware is mostly known for being a good RPG makers, mostly due to their story.
Gameplay-wise, I haven't seen anything particularly ground breaking... So, putting a spin on the MMO genre doesn't seem that likely.
Of course, story-wise... Most MMOs are lacking. With Static worlds and such. I'd like it if there was a world that had a story evolving through player actions... Can Bioware do it? I think so. But will they do it?
haven't we already done this ages ago. i'm surprised they haven't told us already what its going to be about. i mean why not how is it going to change anything if they just tell us what IP it is. bastards i say!
Don't really care after that guys key note recently sounds like they want to make another wow clone like everyone else.
Although if they decide to not make a boring ass wow clone, then i would prefer they choose their own IP rather than restrict themselfs with someone elses IP which would inevitably mean the game would suffer due to no creative freedom.

nearly 2 years man.

I agree, and this is probably the greatest proof that it won't be Star Wars related. Bioware made it very clear that they did not enjoy the working relationship with Lucas Arts while making KotOR.
It could very well be a Forgotten Realms/Neverwinter Nights mmo, but in any case I hope they totally rebuild the Aurora engine, or get another one altogether. NWN 1 was restricted by it, and NWN 2 really showed the strain and limitations the engine has placed on it ( although Obsidians lackluster developing skill heightened those limitations greatly).
I really, really hope that they do something based off of Mass Effect.
The MMO genre has been hurting for a new Sci-fi based game for years now, and all we've gotten is crap, or games that only cover certain aspects (Eve---it's a good game, don't get me wrong, but I don't like being stuck in a ship.).
NWN and Baldur's gate are great games, but the MMORPG scene is so overwhelmingly stacked with Fantasy games that I just don't know if we really need another, Bioware or not.

Are you guys What do you think the creativity in KOTOR ?.
you know, it is LucasArts IP, too.
Just face the truth.
There should be another Star Wars MMO and Bioware is the best at Star Wars IP and Money is sweet.

Well, considering how long it's been since KotOR was developed, I don't have a readily available link for ya. I do remeber it being posted on the original Bioware forums way back, but I doubt it's there after they re-organized the forums there. However, I'm sure many Star Wars fans in the SWG forums could help you out with that, as it has come up from time to time.

Unless LA has changed, I don't think I would want another attempt at a Star Wars MMO. KOTOR was an amazing series, but I really just do not trust LA with the MMO IP rights. Also, AFAIK, SOE still has the exclusive rights for a SW MMOG, making it impossible for Bioware to do a SW MMO unless they were to publish it under SOE, which I incredibly doubt would ever happen.
Another issue is the fact that there's really nothing aside from story that could be carried over to a KOTOR-styled MMO. Everything would need to be overhauled entirely, from the combat system to the items, just to get a working concept. Not that I don't think Bioware isn't capable, but by the time they were done with it, aside from the universe itself, it wouldn't "feel" like KOTOR.
Now, the Mass Effect combat system---that could actually be reasonably translated to an MMO setting without drastic overhauls, and you could, in the end, still get a game that would feel like the SP series.
The "feel" is the big thing. I wouldn't really care to play SWG 2 with a KOTOR theme, personally.
I also don't really think the market would really trust another SW MMOG for a long while yet, after what happened with SWG.

I'm no lawyer and I obviously never looked at the contracts, but I believe SOE has the rights to make an MMO based off the movies. KOTOR is way way before the movies. Which is why everyone always mentions KOTOR when a Star Wars MMO is brought up. Mass Effect type MMO is what I'm putting my money on though, but that doesn't mean I can't pray for a Star Wars MMO.

Licensing contracts aside, I still don't know if the market is quite ready for another SW MMO. At least as long as LA still maintains it's current staff.
And I think if this SW MMO that Bioware could theoretically turn out was anything other than a sandbox game, that a good portion of the community would be in an uproar and would be calling for boycotts because they want their precious pre-CU back. Even if a totally different developer, publisher, timeline, lorebook, and game was involved.

Aside from the fact that I can't really accept a poll of 1034 votes out of ~660,000 members as a truly accurate indication of just about anything, KOTOR or not, there's still the issue of the fact that we're still a minority (albeit vocal) in the marketing department's eyes.
I know that you're heavily biased towards a KOTOR MMO game, but given Bioware's experience with LA, and how heavy handed LA has been with their licensed game development processes in the past ~5 years, I think it's more than likely that we're going to see a MMO based off of one of Bioware's original IPs.

1000 people is an optimum sample .
Please tell me how 1,000 people out of a 660,000 population just for a niche crowd site is a viable sample. The numbers alone are daunting, especially when you take into consideration that the market includes the millions that don't visit this forum, but will possibly buy the game. The sample gathered is not exactly from a neutral source either. Ideally, you want a smaller margin between games, not a landslide; as that indicates a biased crowd or tainted sample.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's the environmental factors more than the numbers.

Look, statistic doesnt give certain results, just gives an idea about the subject. this website is the best community we can take and believe me 1000 people is a good number, please take a look the surveys before elections, or other surveys and polls, you never go and ask all of the poeple just take a "sample" (suitable ages, social positions) and then do it. for example the surveys before general elections in my country is make with 1000 , 2000 up to 3000 poeple, and one of them was for 10 000 people. and my country has 70 Million people. and the results are similiar to this surveys.

Except, however, you are using this sample as a certain result. I'm aware of how a survey works, but with a survey, the idea is to get an unbiased, balanced sample. When you have a survey that results in a landslide, that indicates a biased result. Ideally, with a survey, you want a smaller margin between each result, as this indicates you got the widest range of people answering your survey.
Do you see what I'm saying? My point here is that the survey you took, while constructed properly, is not indicative of what the market may want because the sample was taken in a crowd that was:
A)Not composed of the primary audience
and
B)Shows an obvious landslide result towards one answer.
I'm not saying that people don't want a KOTOR MMORPG, but I am saying that the demand may not be as great as you imagine, because of the sample audience the survey was conducted in. The examples you use also take their surveys from a random crowd. For example:
If you were taking a survey for a presidential race, and the two running parties were Republican and Democrat; you wouldn't take the survey at a Republican convention, would you? We already know what their answer is going to be at either of those places, so we obviously don't need to take a sample from either crowd, correct?
This is why surveys like these are conducted in multiple areas, and among different crowds; they typically (if they're interested in a truly random and the most likely to be unbiased result) will not take the survey in one area, from one crowd, and use that as evidence.
That's all I'm trying to say. It's not the numbers, so much as it is the sample crowd.
Id hav eto say knights of the old republic, but bioware makes great rpgs, they could take whatever they want or build their own.

The scenario and the story are the *precise* reason it would make a good MMORPG. I, along with quite a number of people in the MMO community have been dying for a new Sci-fi MMO game. SW doesn't quite cut it for a lot of us, mainly because it's so overdone.
Comparing the game and it's story to two well established games is a little hyperbolic in itself, especially the statement "baldurs gate and KOTOR always beat mass effect."; considering the game isn't even out yet, and we don't even have the full lore and setting yet.
It's plainly obvious that you want a KOTOR MMO game, and you won't hear anything otherwise; so this thread serves almost no purpose.
Comments

The Anti Social Gamer
I enjoy all of biowares games, so whatever IP they pick to develop, I'm fine with. As long as Obsidian and Atari are kept far away from it.
haven't we already done this ages ago.
i'm surprised they haven't told us already what its going to be about.
i mean why not how is it going to change anything if they just tell us what IP it is. bastards i say!
My blog:
for 2 YEARS, waiting for an announcement.
Don't really care after that guys key note recently sounds like they want to make another wow clone like everyone else.
Although if they decide to not make a boring ass wow clone, then i would prefer they choose their own IP rather than restrict themselfs with someone elses IP which would inevitably mean the game would suffer due to no creative freedom.
for 2 YEARS, waiting for an announcement.
Yep, since around march of last year I believe. That's when I read the news and the first thing that popped into my head was "KOTOR Online" Still waiting...

Dude, I totally forgot about Mass Effect! That would rock!
Link please.
Are you guys What do you think the creativity in KOTOR ?.
you know, it is LucasArts IP, too.
Just face the truth.
There should be another Star Wars MMO and Bioware is the best at Star Wars IP and Money is sweet.
Link please.
Link please.
