Thinking about getting a PS3

Ok, so I am thinking about picking up a PS3 for myself. That new Folklore game looks amazing and I'll eventually need the system anyways for MGS4, and Star Ocean. In any case I have a few questions. . . concerns, if you will. I am not quite sure which model to get. Here is what I know so far:

20gb, backwards compatibility chip, no hdmi, no wifi for about $300-$350 via eBay. Wifi is kind of a big deal to me so this might not be the model for me.

40gb(rumoured), no backwards compaitibility AT ALL, no wifi (?), hdmi for $400. No BC at all kinda erks me a bit. I do have a few PS1 and PS2 titles I still enjoy.

60gb, full BC, wifi, hdmi for about $500. Sounds like the best deal but I'm waiting for the 40 giggers info to come out before I take the plunge.

80gb, BC emulation, wifi, hdmi for about $600. I don't know why anybody would buy this pack. . .

In any case I think that is all the information. The only problem is I don't know which one would be best or even if all my information is correct (especially about the 40 gigger).

Some questions I have are:

  1. Can wifi be added to the 20 (or 40) gigger PS3s?
  2. I only have a 1080i telly. . . does HDMI really matter? (I have plenty of extra component spots)
  3. Any additional insight or information you can give me would be great.

Thanks guys!

P.S. No I don't plan on buying any Blu Ray movies. So don't worry about that non sense.

Eternally mine,
Keebs

    1. Wireless is for the 60GB and 80GB only, so far the 40GB is lacking basiaclly every except a case and a drive bay and is Europe only right now I think?

    2. HDMI does matter yea. Not only rids of wire clutter, but it will deliver 1080p if you ever go that far, Component cant.

    3. I knew you would turn and get one eventually

Hahahah see another person is getting the PS3 for Star Ocean.

I would get the 60GB version.  It sounds like the best buy.  Althought I thought all the PS3 came fully loaded and only thier HD was different.  Ohh well guess I was wrong.

Awesome, thanks for the info guys. I'll probably get the 60 gigger because BC and wifi are so important to me.

Ya. . . I've always planned on getting one but I didn't think it would be this soon. However, the more I read about Folklore the more I want the game. Its the first PS3 title I truely truely want. . . oh also my PS2 broke the other day and I still have PS2 games to play so figured I could knock out to birds with one stone.

Can't wait til Meth finds out haha

Lol. Definetly stay away from the 40GB when/if it comes here to the States then, PS2 games dont work on it at all, period.

all ps3's have hdmi ... if a ps3 doesn't have one.. you are getting scammed

40gb is true.. its releasing in Europe on Oct 10th www.scee.presscentre.com/Content/Detail.asp
It has Hdmi, it HAs Wifi.. there is no PS2 BC yet.. (will become software emulated later) But Full PS1 compatibility .. will retail for 399 euro

you would need to to be wired to a wireless hub.. and that can be wireless to your router i believe.. I'm not sure if USB wireless chips work
I only have a 1080i telly. . . does HDMI really matter? (I have plenty of extra component spots) YES
Any additional insight or information you can give me would be great.

     PS: YOU !!! CONVERTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOLOL

Also I suggest you look on your local craigslist to find a PS3... because that way you can go and try it out before you buy it.... Instead of being blind..

    I didn't convert. . .

I have always been a fan of the Playstation systems its just that I wasn't willing to buy a PS3 for $500, especially with so little titles to choose from.

I got a 60 gigger off of ebay for $350, and with Folklore out soon I'll finally have something to play on the system. Most other games I'll probably rent via Gamefly. . .

I still say that the Xbox 360 hyas the strongest line-up coming out this holiday season followed closely by Nintendo (Metroid, Super Mario Galaxy, AND Smash Bros. is almost overwhelming), with the PS3 coming in third. But thats not to say that I never wanted one, and a fan of videogames I pretty much just love whatever system I can get my hands on.

Yes HDMI does matter. You should get 360 because I have both and I rarely touch my PS3 except to watch blueray on my 50'' 1080p. 360 has so many of the best games out and PS3 is lacking in it's games right now. I also see better video *graphics* from my 360 vs my PS3 which is strange but it is visable and I also like the features on my 360 more.

If you are buying a console right now and do not have a 1080p HDTV then do not get PS3, 360 has more games and a better selection and PS3 market is smaller atm then 360.

I have a 360. . . actually I got it last year sometime. I love it and its a great system. Unfortunately, as a person who loves videogames I am instinctively drawn to all 3 consoles (Wii, 360, and PS3) which I have now have, in that order.

I didn't originally plan on buying a PS3 this early but the combination of me finding a 60 gigger on ebay for $350, my PS2 dying and not playing games anymore, and the Folklore game coming out and prompted me to purchase one.

The only thing that would make me get a PS3 would be if they came out with the new Dragon Quest for PS3. I heard it is coming but when I am not sure. Just that game alone would make me buy a PS3. DQ8 on PS2 was killer.

Rather than making a new topic, I thought I would chime in here since I am in the same boat.  I haven't owned a console since a Sega Saturn long ago, so I am a total newb with PS3.  Bottom line is I am actually interested in the 60GB version, but do all versions run Blu-ray?  I do like high def movies is why I ask, and I was thinking of getting an HD-DVD about the same time.  Why did the OP say Blu-ray was nonsense?

Because I am a firm supporter of HD DVD, and Blu Ray has a lot of issues with its current interactive features including PiP. These things will not be available to the PS3 and current generation players until BD 1.1 and 2.0 come out (a standard in players beginning Oct 31st). Sony has yet to say that a firmware upgrade will allow the PS3 to play 1.1 or 2.0 movies and one of the CEOs of Panasonic (a lead BDA member) has openly stated that he isn't sure whether 1.1 or 2.0 Blu Ray movies will even work with the current crop of players.

    To put it simply.

If you want to know more about the competing formats I'd suggest you goto thee websites:

    www.highdefforum.com

    www.avsforum.com

    www.highdefdigest.com

Those websites are inhabited by supporters of both formats and as such provide detailed information about both. I hope I answered your question!

PS3 doesn't need a firmware upgrade to play 1.1 or 2.0 movies... because PS3 is already able to do so...

The main addition to the specs being JAVA support.. and PS3 fully supports java already.

Pretty much if you have a PS3 you are safe... First generation Bluray players on the other hand may have a problem.. but 2nd generation players and up are fine.

Thanks for the answers there guys.  Maybe once I finish buying a new house, selling or leasing my other 2 houses, and actually get settled down for a change, I will begin reading up on the HD-DVD vs Blu Ray stuff.

    No they aren't.

I'm afraid that simply isn't true. It is true that a firmware upgrade MIGHT allow them to do when 1.1 and 2.0 comes out but not yet. Hell when the PS3 came out BD 1.1 and 2.0 were barely in development, how do you suppose they made the PS3 1.1 and 2.0 compliant when new BD player models released as early as this month still are not yet 1.1 or 2.0 compliant.

"As of September 2007, only the Denon DVD-3800BDCI (MSRP $1999.99) and DVD-2500BTCI have been announced as supporting this feature, but they have been delayed until early 2008. Some profile 1.0 players may be upgradeable via firmware update to profile 1.1 if they have the appropriate hardware, but no manufacturer has announced any such upgrade. When software authored with interactive features dependent on Profile 1.1 hardware capabilities are played on profile 1.0 players some features may not be available or may offer limited capability. Profile 1.0 players will still be able to play the main feature of the disc, however."

Blu Ray has a lot of compliancy issues going on right now and the date for mandatory 1.1 is coming on Oct 31st, why do you suppose all the BD manufacturers are rushing their models out now or delaying them until 2008?

The new features being added.. are all about BDJ.. which is the BluRay Java support.. and PS3's already support Java in its entirety...

Also in the Must have features is ethernet... along with 1 gig of storage... and a secondary decoder for PIP..

IF the PS3 doesn't already support it.. it will..... No doubts.. it will probably be the first profile 2.0 supporter as well..

So like I said.. if you have a PS3.. you're safe.
