I dont get this problem at home, but at work its pretty bad but only because my work PC is crap.   Its the constant use of flash in the ads.

I think you can disable flash in the internet options.. I havnt checked yet.

The whole site is one big piece of commercialised crap now.

Used to be brilliant, but now you have members of staff openly slating things they don't like, adverts covering every spare pixel, blogs (seriously, wtf?) and reviews where the product has obviously arrived with a wad of cash.

I only come here for the forums now and the chance that a regular member may have something to say that interests me.

I agree for the most part, the main reason I come here is to participate in the forums, every once in a while we will get a decent review but for the most part they are pretty commercial.

FYI, cant disable flash on IE, you can get a plugin for firefox to do so.   Unfortunatly I am restricted to using IE at work.  Only way I can disable is to uninstall flash, which I need in some parts.  So, I'll haveto deal with the occasional slowness/hangs.

I think the one you mean is that archlord ad. It's causing problems for a lot of people, including me.

You won't have this problem if you use firefox with the adblock add-on.

I am using Opera, and i just block all flash-plugins for this site..

Btw. talking about opera: i have no idea WHAT they did, but they really screwed up this site for anyone not using internet explorer..

konqueror, opera..both having problems with the site.

    and w3c-check says:

This page is not Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional!
    Result: Failed validation, 674 Errors

    Totaly agreed.

LOTRO add with sauron's eye is monster. And site often opens few of them simultanously .

It is so heavy that i had to instal ADBLOCK on my old computer , because i had to ctrl+alt+del to close browser window with mmorpg.com

    Firefox + adblock + noscript = win.

And to those talking about people getting bans in an unfair way...don't, you'll get banned, call it experience.

I am having the same problem... it took me about 10 minutes and about 5 page refreshes just to get this reply window to finish downloading advertisements and the Post Editor icons and smileys....  too much lag!

<----- I noticed this smiley... WTF does it mean?

    Hey all,

I am going to contact the ad agency about the LOTRO ads as we have had a few complaints about them.

We are sorry that some of you don't like the advertising, however without such ads we could not provide a website like this for free.  I think supporting ad blocking is a horrible thing as once this kind of thing becomes widespread the World Wide Web will evolve into a state where you will have to pay for each content website you access.

I've learned not to trust anything a commercially based reviewer says now, why? Because as people have said, it's clear that companies have paid them to give good reviews, look at bloody World of Warcraft, at most I personally would have given it a seven because it fails a lot in customer service and and the graphics are really cheaply done, look at Gamespot, the reviews have gotten pathetic now and they barely have any substance in them, the only thing it's good for now is interviews and tournaments.

And just to say admin, ad's can be placed without them lagging up people's connections, other sites manage it just fine.

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.

I experience this at work too, where we run on IE 6.0

I suppose it is some outdated version of Flash that causes the problem.

Of course you think ad-blocking is bad, but so far it saved me from several exploits in ads on several webpages related to WoW and my no-script probably saved my ass a couple times from "exploits"put in this very site as well.

Adblocking is the best thing in the world. I wish they had those for television as well.

Well, for the record, we have never taken a dollar for a review...you can ask any of our independent reviewers if they have ever been told to slant a review and they will tell you they have not.  Honestly, I don't think any website would be able to get away with this without someone leaking such a thing.

In addtion, the way we place the ads has nothing to do with it - in fact they are served from a 3rd party source that we have zero control over.  There is really no options one has when inserting a flash control into a page...the problems you are seeing are coming from the flash banner that was designed and hosted by Turbine's ad agency, not us.

Just try to keep the ads sensible and not to overtax the common computers.

When ads start to be a problem for my computer  I block them. So I guess if you keep your site sensible people will not have to use adblocking.

There has always been a lot of graphics intensive ads on the site. Can't say I have an issue with them. The most annoying for me are the Flashing ones. They make my eyes hurt but my PC keeps on fine.

  • AdminAdmin Administrator RarePosts: 5,623

Turbine has indicated that they are sending newer, less intense banners into the ad frames now.  Can those that saw problems give me any feedback as to if things are improved at all?  I have never seen any problems myself, so I can't really tell if anything is improved.

    Thanks!

I've noticed a difference between IE and Firefox.  I don't know if this could just be a problem on my side with the Firefox installation but I've notice that Firefox with no addons this website lags like crazy for me sometimes I have to refresh the page 5 or ten times for stuff to show up.  Right now I am using IE and the page works fine no problems no lag no nothing. Anyone else having this same problem that wouldn't mind posting a solution if they found one?

  • starfox45634starfox45634 Member Posts: 41

i experience no lag at all in firefox. but then again i do have plugins to assist me.
