The answer is very very simple.
All I have to say is two words: Anarchy Online.
Just do what they did- the game would go crazy with life.
Everything --> Catacombs = Free
Darkness Rising + Lab = $$$$
The End.

Excellent idea, they should do that with original EQ also.
But they wont. Both games are still making money so they are going to milk the small community that they have.
And i think alot of new players would be turned off by the outdated graphics, though i think both games still look fine.
The graphics in DAoC have had a major upgrade for most of the parts.
The character models, some of the weapons, and now the Keeps/Bridges/Towers have all been revamped to look VERY nice.
When WAR comes out, they should do another graphics update (For all textures that haven't already been upgraded, making ALL textures to have the upgraded graphics.)
Then advertise it as "The New DAoC- FREE!"
They have done much of this already, have the not?
I honestly dont know how much impact Free expansions to Catacombs will be. When I look at MMORPGs, I base a lot of my decision on whether or not I want to pay $15/month for it. Even if the game itself is free , its the subscription that prevents me from returning.
I think a good idea for mythic is having free (or significantly reduced) DAOC subscription for WAR players. That way, when people start burning out on WAR or they need a break...they can go play DAOC and Mythic keeps the customer base.
Well, I could hope.

Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
AO offered people to play the game for free. If you wanted the expansion content then you needed to pay a monthly fee. So the OP I believe is saying that whatever is in the free trial should not only be free software but free play time as well.
If you want the latest content, then you need to pay the monthly fee.
I am not sure if this is the right way to go. I haven't played AO since it became free, but in general my experience has been that if it is free it will attract the worst players and young kids. Not sure the best way to save a game is to get the worst players into the game.
The problems are that those who played it won't come back, those who are not playing it either have not heard of it, or think that because it is older it is not as good as newer games.
I think at least making it 30 days free for the trial would help people.
I agree, make the base game for free and only the latest expansions for $$$.
The competition is tough - unless the idea is to let it die eventually.
On the other hand, a small population means a small server park with less maintenance and less personal, so it's possible to make positive balance again with the subs, I guess.
There is nothing worse than what remains of the elitist community.
The free "worst players and young kids" will actually be a good and healthy boost to the community.
Not that the free players are good......but that the elitist veterans are far worse.....
The game is dead, and nothing will bring it back except making it free like AO.
wow are you wrong.
the game is NOT dead, more players are joining it everyday.
there is a 14day free trial that you could use and reuse if you wanted to play for free forever... you would just have to make new chars every 14days.
The game only costs 4.99 at Ebgames, and that comes with a month of free play, then for only 12.99 (cheaper then most MMO's) keep it going after the first month.
i DO NOT WANT, the froob crowd tainting this game though... sorry but Froobs take MUCH from a game and add almost nothing.
as it stands most people who play DAoC are 18+ with 50% of the community being 25+
it makes for a much more enjoyable gameplay not having to deal with "Kiddie" problems or having to "Watch your language" because an 8 yr old is playing with you.
as for having an "elitist" crowd i really dont have any idea what your talking about. The community is Kind and helpfull to new players.... untill they prove themselves otherwise.
if you join the game with the prime intention to Cause Grief (griefing) or try to cheat or generally disrupt normal gameflow.. yeah you will be run off... i wish more MMO's where like it.
If you join DAoC with the intentions of enjoying a fun game with the best PvP in MMO's anywhere, you will be welcomed and helped to the point of people bending over backwards for you.
