SWG question

I've never tried SWG but was thinking of giving it a try.  Now I see on Every forum about SWG that everyone loves SWG-pre nge or something like that.  What is nge ? i'm assuming it's an expansion that did something to the game that no one likes ? if so what did it change, how was the game before, and how is the game different now?

Here's my theory. SoE sold their souls to the Devil to make a good game. Problem is it worked, Satan came by the office to cash in. The CEO worked out a deal, fearing for his own ass. Instead of giving him everyones souls, he just had the game ruined, and gave up Smed's soul to cover up the time when it was still a good game.

Pre-NGE and Post-NGE gameplay are things that if you didn't experience them yourself then you can't truly understand why vets hate the NGE so much. My opinion.

The mechanics of Pre-CU SWG and NGE are so different, that they are basically two different games. If you never tried Pre-CU SWG then SWG NGE will just seem like any other game and you wont even know why there are so many disgruntled vets. There's a free trial I tried it the game isn't bad, its just doesn't have the depth in customizing your character as it once did. They basically dumbed it down from being able to choose from many professions to a few "iconic" professions. All these "updates" that they keep giving the game are more or less adding stuff that was in game back in the Pre-CU days. Being a Pre-CU vet I would say don't try it, but being a gamer go ahead give it a try you might like it. If you're a Star Wars fan theres no other MMO out there for you. However if you're not aching to give a Star Wars MMO a try, wait a few months for the Pre-CU emu servers to start up and give the true SWG a try.

and just to be clear, NGE means New Game Enhancements

[EDIT] and CU is Combat Update

The big differences between the original version of SWG (pre-CU) and the NGE (New Game Enhancements is that the origianl version was:

    • Skill based
    • A player economy with complex crafting
    • In-depth non-combatant roles (crafting & entertainment)
    • 32+ professions with many templates (skill boxes) available to individualize your toon
    • Jedi wasn't a push-button starter profession
    • Open-ended sandbox play style
    • A very glaring difference....there was 200k+ more players!

There are a lot more differences, but I just threw out a few. It is hard to appreciate the differences if you never had the opportunity to play the original version.  I do not know if this a bad thing.....you can't miss what you never had. Give the trial a whirl before committing any $$$$. Since most of the servers are now empty due to the NGE, you should make sure you go to a more populated server (which is marginal compared to the classic days).

One of the greatest difference to me is in the actual community itself.

In the past the game felt much more community oriented then as of late. Whether this is because of pre-CU/NGE differences is simply a matter of opinion, but one inwhich I share. I find that post-NGE SWG is more alluring to the "me" kind of player, that is to say it feels like a game where people go into it thinking 'what am I going to get out of this community?'

Pre-CU, to me, felt more like it appealed to the kind of player that felt 'what can I bring to this community?'

Surprisingly, the responses here have been largely restrained and fair.

As someone else said, SWG today and preNGE/CU are completely different games.  As a new player, there's no reason even to consider preNGE when asking about SWG today.  It will have no bearing on your experience.

Try the trial.  Judge for yourself.

I've been on a vet trial myself, and have been helping out a few new players who are taking on the trader profession.

They're totally captivated by crafting, and are enjoying the depth of it, but when I describe to them some of the aspects of the preNGE game, they boggle at it, particularly the original Jedi system.   They're SW fans, they know that having all the NGE Jedi prancing about is just intrinsically wrong.  One of them respeced his BH to another flavor of trader, he was so into crafting, resource harvesting, and all the potential for fun he saw in that.

They're enjoying the game they've got, but when I tell them about what once was, they're sad they didn't get in on that action.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
