I have simply blocked Symone's posts. Obviously he is ignorant and doesn't understand the concept of game design/creation. If it were as simple as he says, and it is just a "toy", then there would be a lot more indie developers than there are.

    GormandY - Thank you =)

I thought it looked like Minions of Mirth. Same buttons and everything. the experience you gain will be valuable as you continue towards working in the industry.

Ya but good is a matter of opinion. There is already a mmorpg listed here that uses torque http://www.dreamlords.com .

No, if you did any reading at all, you would see "she" is right.. you can't make a good MMO with this crappy engine, and you know it.

It costs millions to make an MMo. Torque engine costs 150 bucks. Yes I know what I am talking about, I am one of the few who do.

I have been wanting to use this emote for a bit....and it describes you so well

You are trying to bag on a 16 year old kid (age doesn't really matter except for the ability to gather resources, ie $$$$) for creating something that is pretty cool.  Just because your dreams got crushed by someone like yourself in the past shouldn't make you want to take that out on this kid.

If you really wanted to prove you know what you are talking about, how about offering assistance to a fellow artist and giving tips.  But no, you decide to be a  and break someone down.  This kid is using this to improve a possible portfolio to get a good job when he is older and you are bashing it like he is SOE's Lead Designer.

D3luxe keep working on it and improving, you have an impressive start and I wish you luck.  Don't worry about the 's living under your bridge to success, remember you will always be above them.

No, I am just stating facts. I wasn't breaking anyone down.. lol you guys are funny.. If he's gonna be broken down from a  comment of truth on the forums he isn't going to make it too far in life. Yea I could offer assistance, START SMALLER!

If I had a dime for every kid who asks about making their own MMO.

Then maybe just work on a word called tact...because your posts totally lack it.

If you would have stated "Here is some advice, START SMALLER because..." and then gone on to list things you had run across I would not have said a damn thing.  But all you did was troll and bash everything.  True he is gonna need a thick skin to make it in a really rough industry, but again he could still use some tips.

You are right there are quite a few that talk about it, but he is offering proof (we pretty much have to take it for that) that he is moving forward with it.  So again, bash it if you want...but realise maybe you can help another person out by offering tips and tricks from your experience.

obviously people bashing this guy have no clue how much work is actually involved in making 3d engines. unless that part is what you're trying to get hired for it's really not frowned upon at all.

using tools like torque is not frowned upon at all.  however if you bring something up like realmcraft you will pretty much get laughed at, especially if you never edited it's source code.

I am pretty sure the "MMOKit" in question included most of the graphics and animations here.  I am fairly sure all he did was play with some terrain and pop some items around, and that very little actual modeling was done himself.  The interface is a direct copy from the game someone mentioned, which can only mean that it was included in the Kit, as I would imagine most of the rest was.

Hey man the game looks pretty good. If i had any money and any artistic talent whatsoever i would probaly be trying to do what your doing right now. I hope u keep doing a good job and i hope i can get into beta!

  • paulscottpaulscott Member Posts: 5,613

either way he's leap and bounds ahead of most people.  now it's just picking up real programming to get individuality and start modifying the engine itself.

Ignore the haters and the trolls, continue to pursue your interest in game design to the next level and the next level and hopefully someday you'll be making that game we've all been waiting for (you know, the good one?)

  • SovielSoviel Member Posts: 35

No offense, but you might just want to work towards getting a job at a small development company rather than trying to make your own mmo, since although this is good for a 16 year old [I assume it is,  although I have no idea if you're using a pre made engine or development kit],  it doesn't look very interesting, new, or differen't.

What are you planning to do here, are you going to add more races, what is the combat system like, is there crafting, what makes this game desirable over all the others? I checked the forum and couldn't find much info.

  • NazarosNazaros Member Posts: 215

This game has already more working feature then Darkfall! LOL

Keep going with the great work, and show those people constantly whinning that it's possible to move your ass, and create something that you like when you're not satisfied of the products outhere.

I salute your courage, talent and commitment. And the fact that you're really young just proves another point: That age doesn't mean squat when you have the mention aboved qualities.

    BRAVO!

Symone - Obviously you have no idea what you are talking about. What is your backing against this "crappy" engine? It is all in the eyes of the beholder. If you knew what you were talking about and what you were doing, then you would know that any part of the engine you dislike can easily be changed via the source. Just because you cannot create an MMO doesn't mean that other indie dev's can't either. Learn what you are talking about.

And regarding your "Start smaller" comment, I did start smaller. I have been doing graphics for 7 years, modelling for about a year, coding for 6 years, 2d game making for about a year, realmcrafter for a couple months (go ahead, laugh =P), and now i'm onto this. You do not know who I am nor do you know my life story, so stop acting like you do.

Yukkione - You're right. I havn't worked on the GUI yet, as I figured it wasn't very important. Kind of pointless to have a flashy GUI and no monsters or spells. The game has only been in development for a little under 2 months (from the day I picked up torque), so it obviously is no where near complete.

8hammer8 - You are amazing. Thank you for your support. And I have developed a thick skin in the past few years, through my projects. I learned that for every constructive criticism someone gives, there is someone else there to bash it ten-fold. The comments that are the latter I tend to ignore, as they have no point to them. There is no point in getting worked up over them, especially over the internet.

paulscott - Exactly. I don't why people are bashing me over the best indie MMO engine. Rarely do big game companies code their own engines, often times they just use existing ones. As the saying goes, why reinvent the wheel?

Sheista - You are wrong. Every model in that game (minus the wolf and player characters) are mine. Stock Torque is more geared toward FPS and RTS creation. The MMOKit simply is the altered Torque code that allows bigger networks, zoning, and what-not. Saying that the MMOKit gives you everything you can ever need to create the MMO (models, anims, textures, etc) is like saying that stock Torque gives you everything you need to make an FPS, which is utterly wrong. It simply provides the basic foundation which you build off of.

    Blooblob - Thanks.

    Dremac - Will do, Cap'n ;)

Soviel - Obviously it has none of those features, yet. As I mentioned, the game has only been in development for about 2 months, getting the basics down. Crafting and what-not will come at a later time. I can't be giving away all of my secrets as to making the game unique, now can I? Not to mention, name the last MMO that was completely different than all of the other MMO's on the market right now. And those creators often spent thousands and thousands (possibly millions) of dollars on them.

Nazaros - I plan on doing my best. Regardless if this gets huge and has thousands of players, or completely bombs and doesn't have any, I am doing it for enjoyment. I am not in it for money, I am not in it for fame. Put simply, I do not like any of the current MMO's out there, and wanted to make my own. I am in it to be unique, and to have what the players are looking for. Given, no one game will satisfy every gamer, however many gamers share the same traits that they like to see in a game. I am trying to take all of those traits and make them into one great game (whether by my standards, or by someone elses)

Funny how everyone criticizes the graphics when the gameplay is generally the most important thing.

Not to rain on the devs parade, but there are just too many wanna be MMO's out there.

I do wish you luck, but the odds are highly stacked against you.

  • SovielSoviel Member Posts: 35

I wasn't asking you how you were re-inventing the wheel, I was asking you what the game was about and why anyone would want to play it, because so far it doesn't look like anything even remotely different than PlaneShift, or Horizons, etc. If you come here advertising, you should expect to get tough questions you know, and not just ego stroking. ;)

I usually don't watch games unless they have something about them thats relevant to my interests. Do you have a direction you're going in? Obviously I realize you don't have much developed yet, I've checked your forums; I'm asking you the overview of what you're planning to do with the project, the finished product, not whats in it now. Are you planning to add more races? Are you planning to create a WoW/EQ 2/ Vanguard style combat system, or one more like TCoS or AoC?

Do you suspect that this will be free to play or pay to play, if/when its released?

looks much better then I would expect you know from a small team. Looks like you have combat and everything heh

It takes a LOT of work to get a game engine up props for making the impossible happen. I'll be sure to check this one out yo. Reminds me of the good ole days when I first started out. now we're all in the industry. projects like this look very awesome on resumes you can believe that

alright kid if youve been coding for 6 years why dont you tell us some of the languages you've learned and programs youve written along wth some examples of the programs and show some of the graphical stuff youve made to shut everyone up.

and no he hasnt made any modifications to the source code everything he has made is within the framwork that was already given to him by the torque mmo kit. the buildings we saw may be of his design but other than that ive seen nothing that seems to be designed by him and original.

sorry kid just pointing out what i saw.

It's nothing like the big guys make. I'm not going to praise it just because of your age.

dont look too bad considering its in development. graphics are bad but i dont worry about graphics. he has some pretty good modeling skills and the environments especially the first screenshot with the grass foilage are pretty to look at.

but in a way it does look like it's being developed on a cheap game engine but that doesnt matter because i seen awesome games made with gamemaker..  gameplay looks standard for a mmorpg but it's not released yet so you cant rate a game when you never played it. anyway, im looking forward to it as it looks great so far!

Doubt it's going to be successful, but if anything it oughta be great practice for game making.

    DAMN

From now on, you are officially my idol.
