One of the fun things about KOTOR was that you could "become" someone other than the story protagonist at any time. You could be HK-47 and be the lead in combat once HK-47 was in your party, if you so desired. You could be Canderous and be a face melting Mandalorian.
I doubt if a KOTOR MMO will allow you that sort of instant flexiblity, but then again, it's not a single player RPG, so it's apples and oranges.
Still, one of the greater fun aspects of the KOTOR series is you could at the drop of a hat "become" something other than the Jedi at the center of the story.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
heh being a mandalorian would be right up there with jedi... it'd be tight.
"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."
Madalorian, all sorts of positions in the military.
The world is actually deeper and richer than that of the current series, IMO. Bioware did a great job of setting up the galaxy and Obsidian did a good job of expanding on that... Endless possibilities because none of it is yet tainted by George Lucas himself. Bioware has writers on staff that George Lucas can't hold a jockstrap to.
Lucas is the reason the 3 new movies are garbage. He stopped being good after the Empire Strikes Back.
Bioware did a very good job of setting up a great Star Wars environment with so much room to expand.
A Rule of Thumb when licensing a contract, the license is often set for exclusive rights to avoid competition. So remote chance on another Star Wars MMO, as so long as SWG remains.
There's also a very good chance that SOE only has the license for a specific era of the Star Wars universe. I could easily see them splitting the rights off for a game that would take place 4000 years earlier.
Well how about this as a good conspiracy theory...
That one old rumor about SOE loosing the Star License from LA and that Bioware was going to be awarded instead; everyone remembers that one right? Well let's play on it some more.
What IF (keyword "if") that rumor did have some truth to it, though slight. That what had happen was that the license was renegotiated for an extension with SOE, but that the exclusive rights was omitted. This was then to allow Bioware to develop and release a KOTOR MMO; while also allowing SOE to operate SWG. Those who had worked with SOE, were aware of this and decided to jump ship from SOE to Bioware.
And to add more into this theory, this was at the time EA was given the rights to operate SWG in Japan...
Well, whether based on fact or fiction, it would make for a good story...
And that is why...
Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.
So do we now think that EA will be "super excited" about running another SW MMO?
EVEN IF the MMO was planned to be SW related under Bioware...don't count on it still hapenning under EA.
SWG had some brilliant potential but was overall/is pretty poo. Even though the BioWare confirmation hasn't come yet, IF they are making SW you just can't compare SWG to BioWare's work. Granted, most suits probably wouldn't know the difference, but they should have people working for them who do.
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.
I'm not comparing SWG to a Bioware project. I'm telling you that EA...who owns Bioware...experienced a huge failure with a SW franchise MMO. This is the same company who's shut down countless MMO's over the years. So, I'm saying that if you think they're going to be all on board for another SW project, you are most likely setting yourself up for disappointment.
AT BEST, they'll cut their budget and/or time frame for release, pushing it up a year and making it...well...suck. Then they'll blame it sucking on Bioware, fire a bunch of people, and shut it down.
Heh, like I said, it would make for a good story; whether it is true or not. I'll agree it is more based on fiction than fact.
And that is why...

history DOES repeat itself.
Yea I hear ya man EA has made some really crappy moves and killed Earth & Beyond in favor of 'Sims Online' greeeeat choice lol.
BUT the MMO has been stated as a major factor in the purchase - dont have the link at the moment but pretty sure it was covered in the BioWare MMO Facts thread [the pub] so even if it isn't SW it's gotta be something big cuz EA shelled out nearly a billion and they're expecting big payback from BioWare.
Also EA Mythic has WAR and that seems to be doimg just fine. But yeah... I understand being weary of EA... hope we can learn more about the whole thing soon.
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.
Well...WAR hasn't seen the light of day and so far is pretty much hype. I hear every day how Age of Conan is going to wipe every other MMO off the planet...but I can pretty much guarantee that unless they start from scratch, it isn't. In fact...it kinda sucks.

I agree. It's the amount of money invested by EA in Bioware that keeps driving me to think that a new SW mmo is in the works.
Regardless of the fiasco that is SWG, the star wars brand is still a valuable IP if not, at least, due to name recognition alone. At least financially, would it not be in EA's and Bioware's interest to develop an mmo that garners the kind of hype and attention as star wars(specifically, KOTOR)? An actual successful SW mmo could also help fund the development of original IPs.
I guess I just find it hard to believe that EA would throw down the kind of money they did for Bioware to invest in the development of an original IP that does not capture the attention of a KOTOR mmo.
EA is the same company who decided that a Harry Potter MMO wasn't worth the trouble though...hell, they still have the rights and nothing.
And before anyone blah blah's Harry Potter, forget your interest in it...it's a more current property with probably an equal or greater number of fans.
And EA killed the MMO and has sat on it ever since.
Bioware's CEO and the company start working on a mysterious MMO. He leaves and goes to EA....as their CEO...who owns the rights to Harry Potter...EA then buys Bioware, partially FOR said MMO....
forget KOTOR...look for Hogwart's Online.
p.s. this post has as much credibility as "some guy" at a website talked to "some guy" at Bioware who supposedly told him...anonymously...that it was KOTOR.
gad my wife would play HPO ... and thats a scary thought she'd prolly need a more powerful compy rig than what i have to freaking swing some kinda USB wand (ala Wii ) to cast spells.
damn...

HA! Oh man, they've already done a form of that. My niece has a Harry Potter game for her DS and you have to use the stylus to cast spells with your wand.
I have to admit, the idea is some what appealing. The world is impressive and there's plenty of storylines to tell. I think they would have to make it so that you could eventually become a full fledged magic user though. If the whole game were based around learning and being a kid, it wouldn't hold much weight with the older gamers. At least I think.
Whatever there MMO is I just hope its cross-platform then just PC like final fantasy 11. I already know the games going to be good because I have faith in Bioware no matter what platform its on.
actually...now that I think about it... Bioware's CEO and the company start working on a mysterious MMO. He leaves and goes to EA....as their CEO...who owns the rights to Harry Potter...EA then buys Bioware, partially FOR said MMO....

Hmm if they were working on a KOTOR game and then had to change it up a bit for EA.....
Harry potter already had swords......quick change of code
Harry Potter had robes too!
ooo and they cast spells not to dis similar from force powers!
changing the look of the game may take some time....
Hogwarts Online: 1000 Years before Harry Potter the start of magic sensitivity...... hmmmmm could work.....

Well, they still own FalloutOnline.com, as I've been obnoxiously mentioning for years, but whatever the case, I'm impressed that they've been able to keep a licence acquisition secret for so long. Normally when someone buys rights to an IP you hear about it well before you ever hear about what kind of project it will be used for.

So it is licenced, eh? Unless the following occcurred...
Bioware begins working on a top secret MMO, with an IP actually owned by EA. High level executive John Riccitiello for EA is obviously heavily involved in this project.
John Riccitiello leaves EA and forms Elevation Partners...which then buys Bioware and Pandemic in 2005, obviously John would be aware of all the inside details of the EA/Bioware joint venture at this point and it would be in his interest to keep it quiet.
John Riccitiello then leaves Elevation Partners to rejoin EA as their CEO...and immediately they buy Bioware from Elevation Partners.
The license, the developer, and the producer are all one giant entity now.
Now, the only question remains...what license does EA own that would be considered a highly viable MMO?

One answer: Harry Potter.
That was one of my guesses as well. I still really couldn't tell you what the IP is going to be. My solution to the rapid spread of rumor is...

Another one saying KOTOR. If its fire and ice it will be ....a turd.
See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.
i dont want to destroy any hopes here guys
but every single mmorpg close to release or in develpment is heavily focused on the " directed contend" thing
no world .. just maps
no character creation ... just classes to choose
bioware makes no difference there
so it realy doesnt matter much if it will be a star wars game or not
Lots of options if it is KOTOR.
Jedi/Sith/Dark Jedi.

Yes, SWG Japan was given to EA...and guess what. EA pulled the plug on it.
