Well here I sit, credit card in hand. But I can't seem to perform the action. I like many Beta'd VG and played after release (36 Bard). Then left the game cold turkey in a late night rage of dissappointment.
Question I have is: Has anything really changed enough to make the game worth paying for?
I didn't mind the bugs all that much, that wasn't the problem--the problem for me was the EQ1 flashback
grind, factioning 'till you drop sort of thing.
Someone tempt me

Check out the official boards... you'll get good info there. Both on improvements and improvements still needed. Also check out the server communities to get a flavor of the personalities. I'm on Seradon, I like it, and I really like the game.
The one postive for you is there are now quests that will take you from 36 to 50 without grinding.
The downside here is there really is nothing to do once your 50 except 2 weeks of content.
You may like or dislike whats in the future. In phase two of GU3 will be the first overland raid mobs and hopefully the Flying mount quest. Phase 3 will be the first raid area APW. How long until APW? Some may tell you a month some say two months. But it is coming soon. Other raid areas are in the plans and should take a lot less time to go live. I have not heard of any other high level content in development.
The questyion is will only raid content at 50 satisfy you. The orginal design of Vanguard called for raids to be only a small part of level 50 content and not to provide better content than other 50 content. This has changed since SOE took over and raiding appears to be the endgame. So the question then is whether or not you want to raid or not.
Thanks man for the positive response. I started the download before you posted guess I'll try it again. As far as raiding goes...meh not sure (again EQ1 flashbacks). Glad to hear that there are solo quest that can carry me on...at 36 things got a little ugly as far as soloing went.
Cheers
Actually, they've filled out the quest content at every level now. A good friend of mine started an alt and has remarked on how much more there is for low to mid level now than when we started the game. Also Kasvari Gulch as added on Monday and I think that is high teens low 20?
So I'm pretty confident you won't have to grind at any level now.
Cant help you mate. A lot improved but the grind is the old. They managed to create some excellent content and lock it with excellent grind :P I am not talking about the main questlines, every single fun questline (three lighttowers anyone or broken resurrect contract ?) You grind at a 10-30% droprate only to read the quest updates. Those are, as said, excellent, but man.. after 3 hours grinding ghosts you frogot about the love story behind it. And you will need to solo them, noone is doing them. Well, might be better bcause the grind scales linear in groups
There are also a lot more people in the game now to group with although I would argue that the maturity and skill level of those players now is a good deal lower than what they were at release. But they are still much better than any community one will see in any other MMO on the market now other than possibly EQ2 or DAOC (I have been gone to long to have any idea what the community is like there now).
There's still a grind for most of the nicer dropped items in the game but you can avoid it if you want to. There's a lot more to do since you played to keep you busy all the way to 50. My advice though is don't be in too much of a hurry to rush to max level.
I'm on a third alt now just to do content I blew by on the first 2 characters. Levels come way too fast now with the reduction in the exp curve and rest experience to ever see most of the stuff in game on 1 character.
Thanks for all the good info peeps--still downloading the game atm. I played on the FFA server in beta and Varking when VG went gold. Since the merge I'm not sure I want to stay in an FFA server--anyone have suggestions on which US server is the best atm (no this is not a flame bait).
In my experience if your having the itch to play just go back and play. Don't torture yourself by completely denying yourself of something that is pleasurable. And most games do get better with time so Vanguard should also have improved.
The combination of improved performance, more content and server mergers to help the population have turned VG into an enjoyable game. The best part about it is that its not a cookie cutter MMO, the gameplay feels different and its all open air(no instances).
I never was a fan of completely instanced raids, dungeon hopping or questing. To me that just dumbs the game down and discourages interaction with anyone that's not in your guild/group etc.
Xeth and Seradon are the 2 US PVE servers and both have good populations on 'em so either will do. I play on Seradon and it has a nice community of folks on it. I'm sure Xeth does as well.
Sartok is the FFA PVP server and it has a core loyal population on it but not nearly as big as the PVE servers. I'll let someone who plays on FFA speak for what it's like there since I've haven't played much on that server.
In anticipation fo your next question which might be which class to play. Al classes can solo very well except Rogues, Warriors and Monks. Druids and Warriors are regarded as the weakest of the classes. The Druids problem is mana regen while the warriors is solo ability. All the tank classes are due to be overhuled in GU3 and warriors are supposed to have their soloing ability greatly improved. I have heard there are more classes being overhauled as well so I would expect Rogues, Druids and Monks to get a boost soon as well.
PSI's are probably the only other class with issues in terms of their ability to beneifit groups post level 45 although I thint his will change for their benefit with raids. DSCs might be considered pretty weak for raids.
I don't think you can go wrong in terms of class. The best and most needed group class are Bards. They are fast to level and fun to play. But there are so many other fun classes out there. But there is a class for all play styles. Necros might be the fastest solo class but they are also great in duos and offer groups quite a bit and at least one is needed for raids. If your looking for usefull classes that are not played much I woudlrecomend BMGs, Monks, PSis, Warriors (or any tank) and Bards (although there a lot they are just in great demand).
Best of luck and I hope you enjoy your time back in the game.
