Man that would suck.

Actually, it is based around some singular (more like a multiple epic) event, like a war. There is some FP vs. Qeynos stuff, but it's WAY bigger than that. While single powerful individuals have there own smaller scope plans, like Emperor Crush, and Varsoon, they are just pawns in a MUCH larger scheme. Mayong, Lucan D'Lere, The Ring of Scale, the necromantic order, and the gods all have a bigger scheme in motion, and we're just trying to balance everything back. There's a TON of lore everyone misses because you can't cover all the bases with a 30 second commercial. (Yes, that's a dig on "that other game")

Unfortunately developers are making MMO's more and more linear and structured.  So to compensate they make a storyline.  Everquest II doesn't really have a storyline, just a world.  So really your just in that world and interacting.
I have always said that my favorite thing to do in both EQ and EQ2 is explore. I totally agree that if the world was a linear quest based MMO, that I would not enjoy it nearly as much. There is alot to be said about finding a great quest that noone has told you about, and following it through to the end without spoiler sites.

It is certainly the depth of the world that keeps me coming back. I have always gotten bored trying to level up mindlessly. The only reason i do at times is to find out what is around the next corner... and survive it.
