I currently play DarkSpace
and I like it. Don't know if its the best though. EvE is not bad, its just very complex and takes alot of time to devote to learning how to play it and be good at it.
Vendetta Online looks interesting as a space mmog, and it is supposed to be out August of this year.

Earth and Beyond was nice in that the crafting allowed one to make usable, indemand items, but the developers just gave up on finishing the game (eg, no real high-end content, 1/3 the classes never added even though promised at retail launch.) It was also soloable up through mid levels.
Ace of Angels is a decent realistic combat-sym space shooter, but still in prolonged beta.
EVE is a pker game through and through.
Horizions is supposed to be the next best thing.
Earth and Beyond is the best and will always be the best space RPG.. If EA would have put more into it, it would still be rockin. But ya EvE is a great game.. That is my second choice
