Hellgate Demo First Impressions: Quite good

CydoneCydone Member Posts: 171

Its often difficult to put a finger down on what exactly makes me want to come back again and again to play a demo that realy doesnt have alot to it, but a showoff of gamemechanics.

But here I am for the first time in a long run, logging back in again and again, to see it in play, to feel it.

I dunno what it is. Ive played TR beta, and I actualy like some things there better, but it plays differently, its less easy to get a feel for, to imerse myself in. In HG, even though in the demo, im alone wandering around, i feel imersed, im slowly falling in love with the idea that earth or at least london has in fact been overrun by demons and zombies, and that I have to buckle up and get going. I can run for shelter, regroup, buy some more stuff, and then back out into hell.

Im thinking back at those scenes in Terminator 1 where John Connor is having a flashback back to the fighting against the machines, fleeing back into the tubes for rest and freedom. It has the same feel to it. Mix terminator, diablo 2, remove the machines and put in some dawn of the dead, and you have the atmosphere.

But overall, its the hundreds of smalls things they have done to how the game plays, its obvious that they know what they are doing.

Im hungover like hell, so im not too intelligible right now, just wanted to put up my two cents.

Ill be getting this one.

Despite the pros and cons to the game, I too am having fun in both the Demo and Beta. I just updated my graphic card to a Nvidia 8800 GT and the game is absolutely fantastic. I am still using windows Xp at this moment even though I could upgrade to Vista, but at this time I dont want to waste my time tweaking Vista to work with this game. If running in XP looks this great, I can only imagine what Vista has to offer.

About the gameplay itself, reminds me alot like Doom 3 with a Diablo twist to it. I am definetly getting this game even despite with the mixed emotions of users on this website. To me, I am having a blast so far with other friends as well.

PS. Cydone, take care of that hangover.

    My thoughts:

    • I, too, played in the TR beta.  Personally, I didn't care for it. It never really held my interest for more than an hour.

    • Last night, I played the HGL Demo.  I really liked it!  It immediately grabbed my interest and I enjoyed playing through the demo.   Both games play similarly, although I find the controls to be more intuitive (for whatever reason) in HGL than I did in TR.

    • Not being in the HGL beta, I've never had the opportunity to play with other players (or even see other players).  Based on the demo, I'd say this game isn't a MMO.  I'd love to see the beta to get a better picture of the multiplayer experience.

    • I thought the in-game advertising was very tasteful and fit well within the overall theme of the game.  In fact, I had run through the subway tunnels a couple of times before I noticed my first ad.  After I did, however, it was almost a mini-game for me to find ads. Here are some screenshots, btw:

                 Screen1

                Screen2

                 Screen3

                 Screen4

                 Screen5

                 Screen6

                 Screen7

All-in-all, I thought the demo was fun, but I want to see a little more before deciding to buy the game.  Personally, I prefer the free-2-download, buy membership if you like model over the "have to buy the software" model...

  • I also am interested in the game from the demo.  Sure, the demo is bland, boring, and quick to finish.  But it does show a solid foundation for the game, and that's all I really needed to see from the demo.

Unfortunately, many did not like the demo.  But I think they had way too high expectations for the demo.  Granted, it was horrid as far as demos go, and could do a lot better in grabbing gamers who don't care one way or the other about this game.  Hopefully, that can be resolved at a later date to bring more into the fold.

In the end, they're gonna get my fifty bucks.  If I end up being a sucker so be it.  Still, the game can't be much worse then any of the latest MMO offerings in the past two years.

Just want to add my voice. I got kinda nerves after all the negative comments since I have it on pre-order and didn't get invited :( (So throw me a key if you got one left :p )

Anyway, downloaded the demo and altho it's short and easy, it does push all the right buttons for me. I'm counting the minutes till release! :D

The demo is absolutely fine for a demo. My fear however is that this is as deep as HGL gets. I mean I have heard it is short which doesn't keep my interest since I go through games like crack. If I can just get to the final level in a week it is not worth my money. I want a game I can play for 3-4 months until they put in more content not a game that I will play for a week then not touch until 3-4 months down the line when they make me pay to access new content. Thats just me though, skeptical until proven wrong.

The quests in the Demo kinda sucked, but hopefully the real game has better ones, that will greatly help.    With the levels (instances or whatever) being randomized I think I will be able to play this game for quite a while.    A major complaint of mine with WOW was that if you made a new character, you do the exact same quests in the exact same place, nothing varies.    HGL will hopefully be different.   Plus I remember reading that subscribers get new content every so often.

I have a question I hope someone can provide some ideas

When do we need to make the decision on joining the paid online option?  Can I buy the game and play the single player mode, and join later if I like the game?  I know my alts do not carry over, but at least I can try out the game to lvl 30s before I decide.  I do not mind starting all over again if its worth playing online.

The elite pre-paid lifetime has to be chosen by Nov. 30th. Though you can join the elite program at any time if you so choose for $9.95 a month charge.

    My first impression: quite bad

The first 3 quests I get is some FedEx quest that tells me to go fetch X and kill Y.  I wanted to close the game right there, but I thought about all the hype and continued playing.  Until I met the zombies...and "blood" zombies? Come on! Give me some varieties!

Now I am so disgusted at the game, it's not even funny.

My understanding is you can join the paid portion anytime.   You can play online without paying, though you are limited in the amount of alts you can make, and access to new content.   Although you have access to the entire game that is "out of the box".    Theres are really good page about paying or not paying at http://hellgate.incgamers.com/wiki/HGL_Online#Elite_Status

I wasn't very impressed at all by this game, although it may be better when the full version comes ( I played the Beta) I'll wait until it is out to see (hear/read) if it's getting any better. I've canceled my pre-order.

While we're talking the demo, what's the sweetest drop you've gotten on it? So far I've played it for hours and hours. I run first for the rat boss, see if he is up and kill him. Then run to the bigger necro boss. Exit game, and repeat. Still haven't gotten any legendary weapons. Did find some legendary armor though, with +5 all attributes, good def/shields and thorns aura etc. Best weapons I've found is a  rare rocket launcher with 7 mods (only found 6 mods for it so far). Maybe I can fish up some screenshots if anyone wants to compare demo loot. ;)

Yeah I'm bored, really want to play the real game.

Only good think hellgate have is diablo team. But game it self is booooring. No ragdoll effect, no blood, no fun kill monsters. The game should be hack slash what mean there is shit load mobs and A LOT fucking action/blood/fun, but tis game dont have it. Thanks to EA. EA games never have blood, they just want sell games for kids/adults to get max $$$, tis game fails.

One would assume that it has blood considering there is a graphical option to turn blood off.  I just went ahead and loaded up the demo again and indeed it does have blood.  I'll leave out the part where I insult your intelligence (and eyesight for that matter)...

I just got an orange drop as well (whatever that is...), but can't use it till level 6.  :P
