I played FFXI for over a year when it was first released in the US.
One of the few mmorpgs that I really got into.
But now that I'm out of college and working fulltime, I was wondering if this game is worth coming back to.
I have about 1-2 hours (Tops) a night to play and I honestly don't remember how casual friendly this game was. I was pretty hardcore back in the day and time really wasn't a problem. I do remember playing ALOT though.
My weekends are up in the air. Most of the time I'm busy but one weekend a month I'll have some time to sit down and play.
Is this game worth coming back to with my time schedule?

i dont play it anymore either, but i dont think 1 or 2 hours is enough unless you have lots of friend that still play.
and what level are you? are you starting from level 1?
if you really want to come back, you can always level a BST
Honestly.... I figured that too.
I guess I'm stuck playing Orange Box, Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War until AoC and War come out.
I sure miss FFXI though..............................................

If you can arrange to be ready to group immediately upon loging in, or maybe have friends or a decent link shell with a static party, than two hours would be more than enough time to make decent progress. Travel has been made a hell of a lot faster now, with the supply run quests giving access to a teleport service. Also, there are rings you can buy now for a thousand conquest points that adds a +50% XP bonus each kill, until a certain amount of XP is gained or the time limit has elapsed. It seems that with each expansion, the game takes a cautious baby step towards being casual friendly. I wonder what Wings of the Goddess will do in that regard?
Popular server like Asura, you can log in and start a group yourself right away.
Leveling wise.... i will be honest with you.
An effective group consist tank, healer, refresher will take roughly 3 hour per level from 60-75.
50-60 is roughly 2 hour less (if you have band)
30-50 is less then 2 hour per level
10-30 can be done 2 level in 2 hour or 1 level per hours abit.
yesterday i just logged on my blm 21... ran into qufim and mass invite people and started xp. gotten 3 level within 1 hour and 45 min (as i was counting). (i have express band)

No, 1-2 hours a night is not enough time. Especially since some missions take 4+
EVE - Sharvala
FFXI - Shazamalicious
Guild Wars - Xavier Lucifer & Charlize the Necro

you ever try a Drg burn ?
Just pull and pull on great collibri. Of course, i am also a refresher class (corsair) hence almost every party is pretty damn good.

So during my lunch today I decided to stop by the gamestop at the mall and picked up the $1.99 starter pack.
Installing the updates now and wont be able to log on until tomorrow night.
Any server I should start on?
Is there a particular server with more US players?
Any linkshells willing to recruit a former player? My highest class was a 50 something RDM but I had a bunch of sub classes in the 40's. Planning on starting another RDM.
Looking to get the best experience out of my 30 days as possible.
Thanks

asura is the most active i believe although im told alot of people are still at jeuno and white gate now which leaves bastok , san d'oria , and windurst less populated.
Seems a few of us might be going on Asura^^ Come join us
I agree
I have never played but would like to give it a shot, I cannot find one of these 1.99 starters the OP mentioned, does this game have buddy keys? If someone would mind letting me have one I would join you guys on Asura
Yes, actually I'd like to try this game out to, so if anyone has a friend pass or something i'll take it!
Try your local EBGames/Gamestop. They will have the starter pack near the counter.
I tried the 3 gamestops nearby and all 3 were "Sold Out" of the Vanadiel Collection but all 3 had starter packs.
I spoke with the clerk at the store that I regularly go to and he said they haven't carried a copy of FFXI in a long time.
If you want a retail copy then I'd suggest trying Best Buy.
Anyways,
I made a new character on Asura named Bizzle.
Getting used to the controls again is something that is not coming along easy. For some odd reason I could have sworn that I used the wasd keys to move.
FFXI imo needs to add basic little things to make the game a little more user friendly. By user friendly I don't mean "dumbing" things down but, Making things more effecient.
That being said..... It's a breath of fresh air to be playing such a good quality game again.

The initial controls and graphics settings are horrible because they are setup for a console. Those playing on the console only have the in-game configuration. Although inconvenient to the PC gamer, they can easily be changed.
The game starts off with a Full type keyboard specifically for console gamers, so that they can type simply by touching any letter key. This can be changed with one button in config. to "Compact", which is WASD, or you can customize your keys. However, the best thing to do is to buy a controller. The controls are great with a controller, especially one with a Playstation (analog) design, since that is what the UI was designed to work with. If you really don't want to then just customize the keyboard, making sure to add camera movement and directional targeting, and don't even try to use a mouse.
If you haven't changed the graphics settings in the out-of-game config., you'll want to do so. Most important, of course, is that the initial resolution is 800x600 with a background resolution of... something low. Other settings can make a big difference as well though.
I think they could have made the PC version more convenient by adding auto-detect resolution, initial WASD movement and whatnot (changing settings from a console setup to PC), but personally I would have confirmed or changed such things immediately anyway.
tweak it yourself.
Go to Wiki FFXI and search "graphic" you will get a page how to tweak FFXI,
