What game would you play if Eve ended tomorrow?

Mors.MagneMors.Magne Member UncommonPosts: 1,549

This is a hard question for me because I think a lot of Eve is unique.

But if I had to choose, I would wait for the release of Darkfall because it will have a similar automatic skilling system. However, it isn't even at the beta stage yet!

So if you had to choose an alternative game, what would it be and why?

Honestly I'd probably stop playing MMOs.  Maybe see if WAR or AoC are ok.  Possibly even that Jumpgate: Evolution.  Otherwise I'd be done.

    FFXI: Gauhar - Odin

I would probably not play a single MMO until Huxley or Stargate Worlds... Seriously, Aside from nice graphics... it's all the same old crap. I consider the Third generation of mmo the dark ages of gaming... where all the nice graphics are there but the games can't even present 25% of the features of the first and second generation.

Seriously, you might not like SWG but the amount of features it had back in the old days is still a huge scale beyond everything that is coming out these days.

I really don't like that you have to install MW4 (which is no longer made) in order to play... but it's a solid game being built by the players of the old Solaris/GEnie/MPBT Battletech Community.  The players made it since EA canned the game we wanted to play.  It's been plugging along for the past 7 years being slowly built by various players in the MPBT community and is in final beta stages.

I don't think there's anything out there currently that offers gameplay filled with as much political intrigue on such a massive scale as EVE.

Age of Conan could possibly come close because of the player-made kingdoms, but only time will tell.

Can't tell if you're trying to be sarcastic or not but I'll take it as if its an honest question.

    Things unique in EVE:

    1) Invention... the ability to take an existing item and create a new item from it which has different stats, values, attributes and is generally a better item.

    2) Exploration... the ability to go into space, using the skills you've trained, and find hidden areas to mine, fight, (or both) in.

    3) The ability for players to actively influence the game map.  Very few MMORPG's allow this and none allow it to the extent that EVE does.

    4) Skill system.  EVE's skill system is truely unique and other than UO is the only remaining game in which you can be anything, do anything your heart desires, without having to make 'yet another alt' as long as you are willing to invest the time required to learn the ability.  EVE has no 'classes' only 'abilities' which anyone can train to learn anytime they like.

Those are the four biggies... there's more but that should at least give an idea why he said that.

i have stuck by that show from day one so yeah it will be interesting to see how it turns out

Edit: Have they got a release date for Stargate worlds

i have never played any other MMO.

so if eve ended, i might look for another but the deciding factor would be  regarding a persistant world single server structure.

I think alot of the EVE fanboys{ you know who you are} might just slit their wrists if EVE was to end, lol. Personaly for me cant wait for AOC and Pirates of the Burning Sea to come out. Most of the grandeur of EVE takes place in your mind. EVE is mainly point and click, check this video out for a acurate look at game play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMSjd6HNQdY&NR=1 LOL

Considering how much space is one of my favorite 2 genres *and you said mmo not singleplayer* I would have to choose to wait for Pirates of the Burning Sea. Pirate/Naval is my 2nd favorite genre

I was just curious as to what EvE players would choose. However, when I ran across this, I had to respond. How many MMORPG's have you played? Just curious, because it doesn't sound like many. I am not insulting you, I am just saying that your claims are false.

Saga of Ryzom has a skill based system, DDO also allows you to be whatever you want, so does a handful of Asian Free games. EvE is unique in the way that you can auto-train skills, but a lot of people don't like that, because some people could advance faster with the amount of time they can afford to put into a game.

You've admitted that a few MMORPG's allow you to influence the game map, so technically this isn't a unique feature. Also, SWG still allows you to create items the way you describe. Every game has exploration, so that is nothing unique either. Every game has hidden areas that require you to use the skills you've trained in.

Really, the only unique things I see in EvE as an outsider is how you progress in the game, the complexity, and the fact that it is space based.

In all fairness, the game examples you've quoted have one or two of EVE's features, and very few games have all of them.  UO, SWG were two good examples, but they are games on the decline, while EVE continues to grow.

SOR, DDO and those Asian games ...not worth mentioning as they are commercial failures, at least here in the West.

No, EVE is actually quite unique when you consider the total package, and it would be hard to replace at this time..... Darkfall probably would come the closest though.....

Let's see.... it all started back in the 1980's with Tradewars 2000... various MUX, MU, MUD and other MU*'s while in college.  From there I went to Neverwinter Nights on AOL... then Multiplayer Battletech on GEnie... then Meridian 59...  then UO, EQ, AC, MPBT3025 Beta, AO, DAOC, E&B, EVE & SWG Beta, SWG til NGE, Ryzom, Horizons, Guild Wars (still say that's not an MMO) DDO, Lineage I and II, MXO, EQ2, Shadowbane, Planetside, FFXI, WOW (gag), .... think that covers it... may have missed oh wait... Jumpgate and Darkspace as well... think that's all of them ....

Saga of Ryzom has a skill based system,

Wrong.  Saga of Ryzom has a level based system with a skill system attached to it.  It is 'technically' a sandbox but it really isn't what I'm talking about since it is level based rather than based 100% on the skills themselves.  Doesn't really provide for true land control... PVP is HEAVILY level dependant and the pvp 'event' things where npcs swarm player bases helped and/hindered by players... really doesn't jazz me.  I tried to like Ryzom... I really did.  Just never really enjoyed it... nor did very many other people considering it's financial collapse and lack of any real subscriber base.

DDO also allows you to be whatever you want,

No, it does not.  DDO is based on the D&D 3.0 ruleset.  Which while it does allow for some versatility WITHIN your class, you are still limited to a CLASS/LEVEL system.  Also, DDO is about as worthy of the name "MMO" as Guild Wars is... I am a DIE HARD D&D player and have played P&P D&D/AD&D since I was 13.  I really wanted to love DDO... and I still sort of like it... but it's just not quite what I wanted unfortunately.  It is a pretty decent game but the monthly fee is a tad steep imo... NWN 2 is more my style for a D&D adventure.   It's not a bad game.... just a bit too grindy and repetitive for me.

so does a handful of Asian Free games.

Most of those are just level grinders with no point.  No thanks.

EvE is unique in the way that you can auto-train skills, but a lot of people don't like that, because some people could advance faster with the amount of time they can afford to put into a game.

You've admitted that a few MMORPG's allow you to influence the game map, so technically this isn't a unique feature.

I said "few".  It's still very unique... and it's the ONLY MMORPG that allows the level of influence that EVE does... THAT is what makes EVE so special.

Also, SWG still allows you to create items the way you describe.

What's the point?  Shall we open the whole SWG debate about how crafting is pointless since they added all the quest/drop/loot items that are better than anything a crafter can make?  Oh and they borked zillions of credits worth of ingredients?  Nah .... go to the SWG thread if you want to debate SWG.... If it weren't for the NGE I'd still be playing SWG.  Let's not start that ugliness shall we?

. Every game has exploration, so that is nothing unique either. Every game has hidden areas that require you to use the skills you've trained in.

No, "every" game does not.  Most don't in fact.

Really, the only unique things I see in EvE as an outsider is how you progress in the game, the complexity, and the fact that it is space based.

This pretty much says it all right here.  You haven't played EVE yet you somehow think that features mentioned by those who DO play EVE and HAVE played other MMO's aren't unique to EVE or special in EVE in some way?

I'll be the first to admit and tell people:  EVE is not a game that will appeal to every player.  It's a DIFFERENT style of gameplay.  That said... if you LIKE the style of gameplay in EVE you will truely love the game because it IS very unique.  Sure other games do similar things... but no other game does so many of the things that EVE does... nor do they do it so well.  SWG was actually my FAVORITE game until they rolled the NGE.... after that I went to EVE and haven't really regretted it for even a moment.  I still try new MMO's when they come out.  In fact just got done with the Tabula Rasa beta... it's not bad but not really worth a monthly fee in it's current configuration imo.

Jump on back down to my reply below now.

    Wow... just.... wow....

ok I'll respond up there ^^ look for yellow text.

As you can see I DO/HAVE play/played other MMO's... probably too many others actually :)  LOL

If eve disappeared i would play something else.. but i dont know what.. i think the point your getting at is , What would the Ex eve player replace it with and for all the eve players out there the simple answer is.. Nothing.. there is nothing to replace EVE because nothing is even remotely similar. I would play something else but it wouldnt be a replacement game but rather something completly different. The answer to this question would be much easier if the game were one of the 12834987 cookie cutter medieval fire ball flinging games out there. Personally i get bored after ive seen my character swing a sword the same way for an hour straight.

    Well said

I'd play ISWARS (Battletech Online) until something worthwhile came out... right now?  There's really nothing released that's worth bothering with, imo.  PotBS and Darkfall have the most potential of the candidates in/near Beta though.  (if Darkfall ever actually GOES To beta that is)

Potbs is definatly something im Going to play.... im also interested in Star Trek Online although im really nervous about this game.. Battle in Star Trek movies/series episodes is slow and mind numbing at best. Im hoping for a robust series of activities that dont include firing a phaser bank every 15-20 seconds with a torpedo thrown in for good measure.

Potbs is at the very least going to be fun for the first few months. The graphics look nice and the Open sea pirate game style hasnt been beaten to death. Lets hope they dont do an expansion after 6 months that brings orcs and elves in as playable characters.

    Enough Elves already..

Well until NDA is lifted it'll be pretty hard to say whether PotBS is going to be fun or not :)
