Thinking of playing Vanguard???

If you are thinking of playing vanguard saga of heroes maybe you should bear in mind this post although anyone can post his/her dissaproval.

If you dont want to go nuts and think you have thrown 40$ into the trash dont even bother to buy this game.

Mainly because of its Patch downloader which in the best cases it takes 30-40 hours and normally takes 70-200 hours even if you got the best 10mbps internet cause it always downloads from 2-14 kps.

But not only the download time is absolutely weird, every 10 minutes the download stops and advises you that the file is "bad" and you have to redownload that file so forget about leaving it while sleeping.

Thank you for reading this thread and hope you submit your posts if you dont agree with what i have posted.

For me, the patches seem to be the only thing that download/run pretty smooth here... I wish it could be said from the game itself.

  • TedDansonTedDanson Member Posts: 513

I patched up in full in just under an hour so I don't know what you are talking about. I installed and patched at about 6 pm, and was ready to play by 7pm and I have 8mb cable internet.

Maybe you shouldn't post subjective stuff like this without doing your research....

  • shukes33shukes33 Member Posts: 1,051

same here! my patching is usualy done in less than an hour even with the bigger patches, the whole game only took about 4 hours.

Maybe you have background programs running that are slowing your progress down OP? is there any way you can block how much data you download? sorry not too technical minded :)

Look on the Vanguard official forums in connection issues and see what pple talks about most

I played quite a bit of Vanguard (no beta) the week it was released, quit like most others.  I would like to go back if the game was better,  but I suppose I was a lucky one.. I never really suffered from a lot of lag or graphical issues, or even bugs.

My problem was with the unpopulated world and very stagnant feeling - like it was half done.  Which it was.

If I went exploring, which I like to do, I'd find really neat looking architecture and caves and whatnot... but there was nothing in them.  Only the main dungeon areas were even populated.

Also, as a Psionicist my spell effects were laughable.  The first few months I played, using illusions just popped you into another body with no particle effects at all.  The "Astral Form" ability was just the "invisible" skin on your body - so if you used that stance, you couldn't see yourself at all.

While I have thought about coming back, because the game is the only MMORPG out right now that I'd play, they'd need to fix those two things for me - populate the world and make some damn spell effects.  The spell effects are EQ1 quality.

On a lighter note, I have finally been hearing some good things about the game, and some positive posts.  So maybe it is heading in the right direction.

Thats connection issues though, as in not mormal. With mine though i have no conection issues so why would i look there friend? What i am saying is that you are comparing players that are having issues with the normal patcher friend. Thats why they are patching on the conection issues threads :)

This post is nothing more then a fabrication of lies created to discredit the game obviously created by yet another of the VanHaters on these forums.

The initial install of the game (IF you buy it as a download instead of doing the smart thing which is going to the store and buying it like everybody else in the world) will take you over night to complete.  Nothing out of the norm there considering this is a huge MMORPG.

The update there after shouldn't take you more then a couple hours at worst.

I truely wish that mmorpg.com would ban people that make out right lies like the original poster here.  They do nothing to help the community and they only serve to casue angst.

The download was 1 hour 36 min for me.  hardly overnight.

Well that's my point actually.  The worst case scenario should be an overnight download of the initial install.

The original poster's estimates of time to download and patch was extremely rediculous.

I left the game after the whole McQuiad debacle. As big and open and beautiful as the world of Telon is, it was hard for me to support the game with the developer going out of business and a skeleton crew (which just recently got even smaller) put in place.

However, people are still playing and no other MMO world is as big or open as Telon....not to mention I miss owning a caravel and having a demon dog for a mount! If things are truly getting better, I would try it out again. So when is the relaunch trial coming? Cuz...there's no way in hell I'm paying any more money up front to play this game.

Currently playing: No MMOs. They all suck.

The skeleton crew you refer to has pushed out 2 MAJOR game updates so far and is working on pushing out a 3rd major game update right now that will implement raid content in the game.  Hardly a "skeleton crew" if you ask me.

And, as for their crew getting smaller as of recently, that is because they moved the whole project to the SoE offices and closed down the old Sigil office.  This makes perfect business sense.  Why would you continue to pay for the old Sigil office when you have a fully capable SoE office that they can work at while at the same time gain access to the full benefits of available to them at the SoE location.  This way they have direct access to other great minds at the SoE offices including those involved in EQ1 and EQ2.  It makes it much easier to collaborate on hot issues and such.

Again, someone takes a perfectly normal and logical thing that happened to Vanguard and puts a negative twist on it.

Hardly being negative. I didn't know the details of why more developers were recently laid off. And honestly, one does not need a big crew in order to push out quality content. At the time that I left, I was more or less disgusted with Mr. McQuaid's behavior than anything else. If the move was done for the reasons you stated, great...I'm all for it. But, the only thing that concerns me here is SOE's willingness to keep game updates coming or will they purposely sink it like they did MxO?

You've got to understand my concern. I already leveled a character to 50 once and deleted him out of sheer frustration of what was going on at the time. I do not want to invest time in an MMO when there is no heart in it by the developer. As big and beautiful as Telon is, what is the point of having tons of empty space (and believe me, I spent hours upon hours exploring that world.....SO MUCH POTENTIAL)?

You talk about implementing raid content but when I left, they were just starting to gear up guilds for raid testing. So you're saying no raiding has been implemented yet and is still being developed?

Like I said, if there was a trial, I'd go back and try it out right now. After paying for the game and four months of subscription, I am very apprehensive about investing any more money into the game. I am not much of an SOE fan so their station access pass is a waste of money imho.

Currently playing: No MMOs. They all suck.

The raid content is in testing right now.  The people testing it on the test server so far have had nothing but good things to say about it.  The team has done a lot of work to get the performance and bugs fixed, so that raiding would be possible.  Not only have they made it possible, but in working on the performance issues, they ended up increasing the max number of raid members from 12 to 18 because the performance had improved enough to allow it.

They have added guild halls, the brotherhood system, a whole new area of content by Khal for the mid to high teen levels, improved the performance by a lot, gotten rid of a ton of bugs, squashed most of the CTD issues, and are one step away from releasing a whole dungeon of raid content.

This game is light years away from being mothballed like MxO.  SoE spent a lot of money to purchase this game from Sigil, and anybody who thinks they are going to let it just die off is sadly mistaken.  In essence, SoE bought "Everquest 3" in a semi-working state.  Only difference is it is called Vanguard.  They are making the efforts to make this game the next big thing for SoE.  Part of that includes a lot of things that people wont like (and haven't liked) like firing excess employees, shutting down the old Sigil facility, and reorganizing the project to fit in to the SoE way of doing things.  Those with a "the world is coming to an end and Vanguard is behind it" mentality will see each of these things negatively while those who realize SoE is trying to do what is best for the game will not panic.

One thing that should be noted is that John Smedley in an interview said (and sorry I don't have the link to the quote, but I am sure someone can find it) that they had learned their lesson with the changes they made to StarWars Galaxies and that they would never do anything again like that with out consulting the community first.  He also stated that while he would like to take SWG back to the way it was before the NGE, he said it would be as much a disservice to those who like it the way it is now to change it back as it was to those who liked it before when they changed it the first time.  Hense, they made a big mistake, but they are going to have to make the best of it now.  They will not make that same mistake twice.  It cost them dearly the first time.

Well, I wouldn't call VG an EQ3. To me, that is an insult!! Well, I'll definitely be checking it out again when it becomes available for trial. I really do miss the openness of Telon. Playing MMOs like LotRO, while great, make me miss that kind of openness. I get tired of the invisible walls, mountains as artificial barriers and places like the Old Forest which...is not really a forest but is a maze where the developers mostly used trees to create paths.

Anyway, noticed your name was Loothur. Is it also Loothur on Florendyl or are you Lothar on that same server? If so, I know you. :P

No.  Actually my name is Loothur on Florendyl.  Although, Florendyl does not actually exist anymore after the big server mergers.  Florendyl got merged in to what is now called Seradon.

On Seradon, I am Loothur VonRichten (Wood Elven Ranger) and Jemand VonRichten (Thestran Cleric).  My main character is Jemand.  Cleric is an amazingly fun class to play in Vanguard.

By the way, I am an 8 year EQ1 veteran, and when I said that Vanguard is essentially EQ3, I didn't see that as an insult.  To me that is a compliment to both games because I loved EQ1 and I now love Vanguard.  And, don't get me wrong on this point... I HATED.. yes HATED!!! Vanguard in beta.  The Vanguard of today is nothing like the Vanguard of beta.

I have patched up my "beta" client yesterday, since I thought it might be worth to take another look into the game after all this time.

Patching went smooth, no problem at all. Just didn't have time to play yet.

...totally patches fine for me too.  Im actually recommeneding it to my friends again!  If SOE keeps up the fixes (though for me is awsome right now) This game will make the top 10 this year yet

i'm really taking into concern playing vanguard again. i already played it in beta and after release until the servers gone quiet. what wonders me is not only the question of performance today. as far as i read this thread correctly, it has improved a lot. i would be glad if someone could put an answer to some questions that rumor my mind about vg, which could bring me closer to a decision. and of course i would like to have someone first hand and still - or again - playing.

    - what about the goldselling- cancer? is it under control? is the ig market working properly again?

    - what about housing problems? can you place all items in there now? (when i left they sometimes showed up in the form of a potatoe or something, where i wanted to see my weapon on the shelf.)

    - what about chunk crosses? do they work properly now or do you still loose your mount from time to time?

    - what about the balancing issues, especially concerning pvp?

    - what about the server populations? is it possible to group within - say - 10 minutes? or do you still have to call for members for about 1- 2 hours only to start the dungeon and quit right away, because your first m8's have to leave?

    - what about the npc- living, especially inside the cities? still thoughts "am i alone on earth?" coming up?

    - what about cast/ abbility animations - did they improve?

    - what about bugged missions - is it playable now? (e.g. for a long time one of the unicorns was invis)

    - what about the crafting - is it still endless clicky grinding? is there finally ep for real items?

    - what about the usefullness of crafted items - are there still similar items dropping? so in other words - is crafting still useless unless you do furniture or stuff like that?

thanks in advance. i hope, someone can give me a second glance at that.

Im afraid this is still a problem at the moment

sorry still working on my first house :)
    - what about chunk crosses? do they work properly now or do you still loose your mount from time to time?
they are much better it's very rare i lose my mount
    - what about the balancing issues, especially concerning pvp?
classes have had a lot of work on them but it's still ongoing

After the server mergs grouping is much easier and the pop seems to be expanding too :)
    - what about the npc- living, especially inside the cities? still thoughts "am i alone on earth?" coming up?
the guards etc move around more now and there are more npc's apearing
    - what about cast/ abbility animations - did they improve?
mine were never really bad for my ranger so can't comment sorry
    - what about bugged missions - is it playable now? (e.g. for a long time one of the unicorns was invis)
most bugs have been sqashed now. i can't remember mt last broke qust.
    - what about the crafting - is it still endless clicky grinding? is there finally ep for real items?
they have added more exp for levelling but it's still a bit of a grind to be honest

crafting is providing the best armour/weapons in the game at the moment.
thanks in advance. i hope, someone can give me a second glance at that.
hope this helps a little friend :)

yes, it does. great. thank you for those quick answers. it seems to me, its still not wasted to believe in this game. i had lotro after that and i'm currently testing tabula rasa. however, none of them can compete even with the vg in former times. so i think i'm going to try it again sometime soon.
