Desperate for a game suggestion for a couple.

For several weeks now, my fiance and I have been searching for a mmo to play together, with little success.  Its to the point that we spend a large majority of our free time, just looking at games that we could be playing. 

We've tried narrowing down the games one by one, eliminating a good deal of the "Released Games" over time, but we always seem to favor the same old things that we once played (mostly because of the standards recently played MMOs have set, though I really wish I could find the patience to sit down with Ultima Online long enough to figure out how to loot).  The problem is however, that we don't really have similar  tastes when it comes to games. 

Over the past few months I have played EVE Online on and off  (enough to accumulate about 8.0M sp), which I enjoyed.. most of the time, though without clear goals, the game became very boring.  Before EVE I had played World of Warcraft with her, which was entertaining and worked for a while, but conflicting interests later on brought an end to that.  She on the other hand, has recently played Lineage 2, Everquest 2, and EVE Online and has been some what disappointed with each.  Currently she is looking into Tabula Rasa, which she seems excited for, but refuses to play it without me, but I would like to see how well it does after release before I make any commitments.

When it comes down to the criteria the game must have, it must be flexible, we are both college students with set and differing schedules, so it would be nice to be able to pick it up at any moment and be able to make some sort of progress.  She enjoys being able to solo and not have to constantly rely on a party (No FFXI), and I enjoy occasionally grouping and taking part in more social aspects of the game. P2P is also not a problem.

Any suggestions to what games we should look into are welcomed, as any help to ending this constant loop of "What ever you want to do" would be greatly appreciated.

GW  might fit your criteria but the later part of the game is all PvP which you may not like.

I also suggest Lord of the Rings Online it's kind of like WoW but not really. Has alot of solo and grouping content.

We've tried Guild Wars, up until Nightfall (though I only have up to Factions), but neither of us have really stuck with it.  We open it up maybe once a month, and then forget about it shortly after.  We are looking for a game that involves a little more involvement than Guild Wars, though it is occasionally fun for some quick PVP.

We tried the LOTR trial as well, but neither of us made it out of the tutorial with any good comments.

You might want to try tibia then not my usual suggestion.....but it's easy to get the graphics are kind of below par (ok very below par) but you can solo all you want or do group hunts and no level cap. www.tibia.com is there website.

Honestly, Hellgate really doesn't appeal to me.  I played the demo for a while, as a marksman, and didn't find that all to entertaining.  Left click, kite big zombie thing.  We really enjoyed playing Diablo 2, however it just doesn't feel at all similar.  Its certainly not something I'd want to subscribe to.

i'm not sure of your play style, but if you guys duo with healer/tank characters, EQ2 had good duo combos, so did CoX. it's hard finding a game that suits you both, but finding one that give the biggest variety of styles is prolly your best bet. based on that... try Perfect World (free), Anarchy Online (free), EQ2, CoX, and maybe even SWG  (the non combat part of the game is actually better than the combat in the game). each of those has multiple various other things to do, either decorating housing, crafting, or just bouncing from place to place vendor shopping.

maybe if you two dont have similar interest in games you should try pursuing another hobby together use that 30$ a month for something different I know I shouldnt be saying this on a Gaming website but I would look into something else personally. and TR is still in beta you actually have 2 more days to get a feel for the game so if you both want to get a GENERAL feel for the game I would suggest beta. Also I used to play MxO and that had alot of cool elements about it, I actually found myself socializing instead of leveling though and at level cap the game kinda falls off other than the occasional storyline patch they put in.

We don't normally duo, because of our different playstyles (though we do coordinate classes so they match well when we do plan to do something).  She usually invests a lot more time in a game than I do, but we try stay within similar level ranges.  We've tried  City of Heros/Villians, it was fun for a moment, but it became rather uninteresting after a while.  SWG is slightly different, we just don't really relate to the game.

We would like to have other hobbies and do more things, but neither of us have any form of transportation at the moment, and $30 a month is fairly cheap compared to other things we could be doing, thats less than a single afternoon out.   As for Tabula Rasa, she has been playing the  beta on and off and has really been enjoying it, however I'm still a little iffy about how things will be at later levels, which is why I wanted to wait to see after the release.   I have a hard time playing the game right now knowing that all my progress will be deleted after beta, so I didn't play too much.  Being a specialist was entertaining though, I would have liked to see the higher teir medics though.

And do you two have to play together? cuz if not if your gaming preferences are so diferant why not play diferant games?

 

If it's a must why not try out Knight online?

Well, I guess I'm going to give LotRO another shot before its marked off the list.  Maybe its a little more interesting after the tutorial.  Afterwards I'll look into Vangaurd, since thats the only thing I know we haven't played.

I played lotro till level 15 and it's pretty good...not enough ways to make money at lower levels for me but gameplay/story/funwise i prefer it over wow

Blah Tibia, i could barely look at that game, much play it. Anyways my top 3 games for f2p and p2p that you might like are:

Free to Play

• Twelve Sky - Nicely put together game but does not have alot of questing involved.
• Talisman Online - Camera veiw like Titans Quest, but gameplay and basically everything else screams WoW for free. Has limited quest's after 25 that give you appropriate xp. Still in open test phase.
• RF Online - Just went f2p not to long ago. Is a decent game through and through. Has some downfalls here and there but its one of those games that keeps you coming back for some odd reason.

Pay to Play

• Dark Age of Camelot - My favorite mmo of all time. Decent graphics for its time and has the best all around gameplay. Its RvR has received numerous appraises.
• Vangaurd - Although this game has alot of emptyness, its still a decent game. Only problem is I had more fun creating characters then actually playing them. I did manage to get a necro to 46 though only to find out that the end game is quite lonely.
• Lotro - Only thing I liked about this game was its nicely put together crafting system. So if you and you lady want to be craft botters, then there ya go.

 

There is also some games that are decent fillers like Titans Quest which has a diablo feel with a Battle.net type server system. Also note hellgate london. I would have something good to say about hellgate london but I dont and thats just that.

If you dont mind waiting awhile and want to use one of those games as a filler, then I would check out possibly The Chronicles of Spellborn or Stargate Worlds Online. Two very unique games that im sure are going to take a nice chunk out of the WoWinator before WAR comes out. TCoS actually looks like the best game Ive seen put together in awhile but until open beta comes out, only time will tell. Hope this helps and just enjoy whatever you guys play together and remeber its only a game. Even if your owning her butt in a 1v1 pvp battle.

Anarchy Online was suggested but  you did not respond to it specifically. The Basic game is Free with all the content of the original release. It is one of the longest running MMOs and still one of the most involved available with a SciFi based concept. There is a lot of back story that is honestly very good.

You can play for free and if you find it compatible and interesting you can upgrade to the expansions. During your free play, there will be time to talk with other players about the expansions to give you a better idea and understanding of what to expect.

The community as a whole is very helpful.  Getting into a good Org will benifit your experience as well as helping to understand the somewhat involved learning curve.

DAOC, Classic Servers, US..... game is both a good solo and good group experience these days.... and there's enough folks still playing to have a good time.... Play Albs.... always a fun realm with the lore....

Yea I can understand, what happens with TR in a year or two down the road is complete speculation, I myself have contributed my own imagination to that however and will be interested to see where it does end up going. and as for the other hobbies, wish you two the best of luck and maybe things will turn around for you two.
