KOTOR and BIO-WARE...
All one need do is check any of the many MMO forums around the NET to see STARWARS KNIGHTS of the OLD REPUBLIC ONLINE will become reality.
Let's face it people, this is the game everyone wants. No IP on the face of the planet can turn this market of boring, cookie cutter MMO's on it's ear, like a brand new STARWARS MMORPG. Anytime BIO-WARE has leaked even the smallest amount of information regarding a KOTOR MMORPG, the buzz spikes to new highs.
Can anyone deny that this is one kickass marketing ploy? I have to say, that if I were the powers that be at BIO-WARE, I wouldn't dream of confirming a new STARWARS IP MMO until about a month before BETA. I mean just think about it for a second. Why would they invest in a huge expensive marketing blitz, if all they need do is leak info from within?
Also, by keeping things on the down low until the very last moment, they will not have to worry about interest fading. If they release the game 6 months after making it official, I feel they will have record sales and subs. I mean, check out all the games that were over-hyped in development, only to give customers less than what they expected. By waiting to the last minute, they can avoid over-hype and release a game with few promises to make good on. Think about it...if the game is delayed or Canceled, BIO-WARE will not have to explain anything because the game was never really there...RIGHT!!!!
There really are a lot of advantages to keeping KOTOR under raps. Personally, I don't think we will hear anything official until KOTOR in just a few months from it's release. But, I do think KOTOR will happen and I think it's going to be the best MMORPG ever. I think it will combine all the great things about the KOTOR franchise with all the cool stuff that SWG (pre-CU) had to offer. Time will tell...THIS IS THE GAME EVERYONE WANTS! there is too much money to be made...Too many people want this game to be.
This game will become real because of sheer greed...Lust of money will give us the game we all want!

I Agree. I think Bioware itself who starts that speculations. I have never seen such a succesfull advertising for a game before. Every gamer on the net talking about it. IMO, They will announce it, Summer 2008. and probably , begining of 2009, Beta will Start.

This really could go on up until launch. All they need do is simply "NOT CONFIRM" ANYTHING! I mean they could be working their asses off on this game in broad daylight, but if they never CONFRM it...they can keep this going forever.
If something were to happen and they had to delay the game or even cancel it...No one could ever say anything negative because the game never exsisted in the first place...pretty clever!
Yeah, but .. just think a bit about, what if you're all wrong, they are not deveopping kotor mmorpg, not even a sw game. Everyone will be disapointed, and might not even consider looking at the mmorpg they are making, since they will feel that Bioware was laughing at us for not telling what was the game.
Sincerly, if it's not a sw game, I might no even consider looking into it. I'm playing other mmorpg right now, and I don't see why I should move to any other game. Kotor is something we all want, saying nothing to us, and saying that's not kotor is bad, unless it's kotor mmorpg.
If they are really working on it, I do agree it's a really good strategy.
But it's not a good one if it's another ip. It will make people soo angry for not telling us that they are not workng on starwars.
All the more reason that BIO-WARE would confirm they are NOT making a KOTOR MMO...I also think they would CONFIRM what they are making. By leaving it open, they add fuel to the fire and it only leads us to futher believe that there will in fact be a KOTOR mmo.
Based on your assumptions...I think if they were not making a KOTOR mmo, they would have told us 100% ...THEY ARE NOT!

I personally hope that the rumors hold true, because after the NGE destroyed SWG for me (and lets face it, about 75% of the rest of the population), I've been anxious for something like this.
I'm not going to get my hopes up for anything, yet. I don't want to be hugely disappointed, but I can't deny I'm curious. I think "Attack of the Show" was going to talk about it last night, but I DVR them all so I'll have to find it & see what they say about it.
I don't think Bioware is developing a KOTOR mmo..or at least I hope not.
First of all, they wanted to be unique.

In response to the many questions and queries that I may in principle be asked, I - hubertgrove - would like to neither confirm nor deny that I am working on a SWG-derived KOTOR-themed MMO.
If that saucy little bit of viral marketing doesn't bring in the ladies, I don't know what will.
I agree - I think this is rabid internet speculation by Star Wars fans who are still upset about SWG.
Lets look at all the reasons this probably IS NOT Kotor Online
1) Bioware has expressed distaste over working with Lucas Arts
2) Lucas Arts would probably not sell their IP to a competitor (EA)
3) Bioware has recently acquired two other famous IP's (Fire & Ice) (Harry Potter)
4) A Harry Potter MMO is much more likely, given the popularity of Harry Potter and the fact that there is no HP MMO.
The reason Bioware is keeping quiet about this is that there is a much more immediate project that they want everyone to focus on - MASS EFFECT, which is coming out in less than a month. Trust me, Bioware is not thinking about anything but Mass Effect right now - this is a series that they have everything invested in and their reputation depends entirely on it. Think about it - if Mass Effect sucks ass, none of you will even want to play the MMO.

Maybe so, but you can be pretty sure that Bioware won't develop it.
Why would LA choose Bioware to make it, and deal with all that crap? We aren't even talking about the same Bioware that made KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2 - this is a different studio with new developers.
LA could make much more money by using a different developer if they wanted to make another Star Wars MMO.. and you're right, there probably will be one.
As for what Bioware is doing.. most likely it is NOT a star wars game.
It will not be a Harry Potter MMO, JK Rowling is very strict with what happens in her world, & an MMO that would allow people to run amuck through Hogworts would be against everything she stands for.

one question. Because everything we read on the internet is true? Especially on forums. yea I can remember the las time I went to forums about the war in Iraq instead of MSNBC to get news about it. AND not to mention this thing thats being posted over and over again on the other forums IS JUST THAT its an article stating "a close source" that was very vague and even if they did get some one to say those words it was probably nothing more than a bum they payed after handing him some lines. All these rumors are ridiculous and the fact that everyone is going hook line and sinker for them is even more ridiculous wake up and smell the flowers yourself instead of taking people's word for it. look at how LA and EA work, they arent going to work together. and if a SW MMORPG were to be the end all to MMO's what happened to SWG in its early days? why didnt that acquire more subscribers than WoW currently has? because the SW universe is actually known to the people that look into its lore, and have read up on the characters and know that Jedi are a very small part in the story, jedi are only big because of the movies but all the other books written and many other things going on in the Star Wars universe making a MMO solely about jedi is a HORRIBLE idea. hmm Matter of fact I think there is one already out....but I cant quite think of it.....hmmm... OH YEA! SWG's jedi population is just wrong, and they have done it all wrong, if you guys want to fight with lightsabers and not pay attention to the story go play jedi academy online and quit worrying about the MMO being KOTOR because of an article that we dont even know the name of the guy who stated those things. quit believing everything you hear and look into it for yourself.
A recent episode of AOTS on G4 mentioned Bioware and KOTOR MMO, unfortuntely my cable company sucks (Time Warner) and for some reason they didn't show the complete episode and instead put on a rerun of X-Play. =

If G4 knew about it we would too, matter of fact it would be on the G4 website and its not, the fact of the matter is, that it is all hype and speculation based on no facts but an article that people have been posting continously everytime it resurfaces on other forums, but it happens to be the exact same article but it poping up continously makes it credible I guess.
This rumor sparked like wildfire because people want it to be true.
IE:
"I have heard from a friend who works for Square/Enix that they have begun work on new Fallout MMO. "
If this were credible, it would have sparked a similar storm..
How about...
"I have heard from an industry insider that Black Isle studios is reforming to create a PLANESCAPE: TORMENT MMO."
Any of these would have everyone going crazy because we WANT it to be true. If only life worked that way.
exactly everyone saw the article that were looking for a new SW MMO and they got all puppy eyed about it. they didnt even think to look into it. they just started posting the first article they read about it (which is the only article) and have been causing all this hype and speculation, when in truth we are no closer to a KOTOR MMO than a WoW 2 developed by SOE.

Personally, I think theyre waiting until after the release of Mass Effect to announce theyre making a Mass Effect MMO. It makes sense really.
from the so-called sources second hand reporting.. the IP could be entirely misunderstood. I mean, the only Sci-Fi game theyve done up to this point has been KoTR. If someone had mentioned theyre doing a sci-fi based MMO it could be misinterpreted to be KoTR and not Mass Effect.
However, I really think its going to be Neverwinter Nights. Going to bring back one of the first MMO's ever (if any of you had ever played NWN on AOL) in a grand format in total 3d

IGN.com doesnt even talk about the rumor being true matter of fact their first post about it is from the guys at BioWare themselves saying that a rumor is all it is. and you know what IGN.com has more credibilty than primotech so if you want to believe anything I would be more inclined to focus on IGN.com and G4tv and gamespot.com and all the websites that gaming companies actually leak real news too instead of some tabloid site.
THE ONLY reason for Bioware not revealing it will be a KOTOR game I could think of (that would make sense) is that Lucasarts is MAKING them not revealing it, in regards to SOE and their contract with them for SWG.
NGE SWG is in bad state now, imagine what would become of it if KOTOR online was announced. Subscriptions would be canceled in a heartbeat.

I am excited just knowing it is a possibility they are making a new SW but at the same time very cautious and I will tell you why.
Its not so much the arguement of the IP or if its true, its the fact that a lot of us in our minds are thinking back to the way SWG was in the beginning (pre-cu). Do you really think it will be anything close to the way SWG used to be? I dont mean the same as far as health, action, mind, UI, combat but more like housing, crafting, community.
This is what would worry me the most because in too many of our minds we are thinking of the original SWG and if a lot of the things that made us have so much fun in SWG arent there then there would be a huge let down.
Of course on a side note any combat other then what SWG is using now would be a huge improvement.

SWG is doomed regardless and SOE and LA know this they havent changed their attitudes towards their subscribers since the CU and wont ever they still treat them like crap and the only people still left in SWG are hardcore star wars fans not wanting to leave just yet because of what SW means to them. and if BioWare were making a KOTOR MMO EA would be the new publisher which they have no rights too. and there fore EA would announce it to get everyone ready for it and slap SOE/LA in the face. Also to all the people saying that they are waiting till the last possible moment to keep interest, how long did we know about WoW before it was released? or what about WAR? these games have been around for a long time before they were ever released and they are still plenty hyped about and I dont see WAR taking a hit because it was hyped about early? if anything as they get closer to release I see it increasing.
Anyway, my point was that ANY publisher wouldn't miss a chance for announcing such a potentially HUGE hit, so the whole OP post doesn't "hold water" to me.
IF there is any truth in rumors that Bioware IS making this KOTOR online game, they are probably waiting (instructed by LA) for SOE to make last few bucks out of SWG and then (finally!) close it.

Its just speculation it is just as likely to be a jade empire, or balders gate mmo. KOTR is their most populer IP so naturally thats what people assume it is. Just like if nintendo were to announce they are making an mmo most would probably hype it up as a pokemon mmo since its arguably their most populer IP.
Btw KOTR is not what everyone wants, 3 million copies or something around that number is what they sold for the first game, and not even half that for the second one from a different studio, both of which were single player games.
Not only is 3 million players not "everyone", but how do you know that that 3 million would even want to play an mmorpg or an online game of any sort?
last time i checked most hate the idea of paying monthly to play a game, especially console users which is what KOTR is a console rpg with a pc port its also got no multiplayer either if i remember right so theres no reason to assume thats what the majority of the fanbase want.
Also the most obvious thing, there is a mmo out already based on the star wars IP so if the company has announced it wants to make a truely original mmo how can they then go and base it off of a IP that already has an mmo in the same genre?
KOTR is not that different from what SWG is, also even if it was KOTR it wont be pre NGE despite what people on this forum want why would people think Bioware would make a sandbox game lol their games are the most lineir rpgs i've played plus read their latest key note they are making a game similier to wow in that it appeals to the majority a sandbox game does not appeal to a majority of players.
The game will be announced when it is almost complete most likely, just like blizzard i think Bioware is one of those companies that doesn't like announcing their games to early in development for obvious reasons.
Oh and one last thing they arent denying anything because like most companies they do not comment on speculation theres no reason to most people take rumours with a pinch of salt so its not going to hype their game anymore than it already does/has by having the name Bioware written next to the title.
