Big World Tech

erandurerandur Member Posts: 727

I heard of this mmorpg, and liked everything they announced so far... But when i was googling the web (which is one of my weird hobbies, i found a MMORPG engine, called big world tech. And when i wanted to view some screenshots of some games with that engine, I saw Stargate Worlds standing there...

Why did they buy a MMORPG engine instead of making one? I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with the budget, as buying MMORPG engines is quite expensive (usually around 6 digits). So... did they buy it because they wanted to save some time?

And why did they buy THAT engine? (Big World Tech) That engine is one of the most limiting engines on the market at the moment...

So altough the series where (and are) good, don't get your hopes up, because the game isn't launched yet, at they already managed to blow it...

Ah well, convince me that I'm wrong! Because it'll be a shame if a great 'saga' like stargate goes to waste...

Edit: now that I've been complaining about the game engine, it looks like the Big World Tech's website has some screens of stargate worlds.  http://www.bigworldtech.com/games/stargateworlds_photos.php

Too slow as usual hah. It looks "bleh". All the other titles seem to be fantasy, but I found out some other odd things there, like a "storm hawks" mmo I have heard nothing about.

I assume not every MMORPG is commercial, the ones on mmorpg.com are only the more commercial ones, altough some shouldn't be commercial

Not sure how that specific engine are in a game, but it isn't that bad principle to buy a engine, and let the developers focus on the actual game. Too many MMO's are kinda bad just because the different engines has relative bad performance. If a company only focus on develops a mmo engine that can be used in multiple games, that's just good.

The fact of buyinh one isn't bad no, but Big World Tech is very limiting, so unless they reprogram the whole engine (which i doubt, why would they buy an engine, if they'll reprogram it anyway?) i doubt SGW will have a future.

I think you are getting slightly confused as to what's what. Big World is the server tech that they are using. Basically it's used for distributing the game world accross multiple machines.

The actual game/physics engine they are using is Unreal Engine 3 (see here: www.cheyenneme.com/news/573/ )

Using an engine doesn't limit them in any way, basically the engine handles the physical interaction and drawing on screen, so it doesn't in any way determine whether it is a fantasy or sci-fi game. Unreal Engine 3 is a pretty powerful engine in itself and has lots of features and is used in games like Gears Of War and Bioshock.

Using someone elses engine has some big advantages. It's generally a higer quality engine than one created yourself for a start, and comes with a large amount of tools. Another big advantage is that it cuts development time dramatically, most MMO's take at least 5 years to make, but because CME are using Big World and Unreal Engine, they can cut the development time to 3 years, which also saves them money and allows them to focus on the actual game content more.

Oh and SGW will most definitely have a future :)
