Since I'm cheap and desperate to scratch my MMO itch, I've been considering a return to either EQ, picking up LOTRO again, or coming back to Camelot. Problem being with each:
EQ: The low end game is hell, no one plays the fun zones anymore, therefore, a severe problem of getting into the game again. I almost refuse unless they were to institute new classics/progression servers.
LOTRO: If I wanted to play WoW, I'd paint the wall with my brains. This game, albeit fun and a great community, is too WoW feeling.
DAoC: I'm concerned about anemic server populations and the community in general. Is it still mostly people instancing and PLing their way to RVR to the point that I'm going to want to put a bullet in my head or is it worth coming back to with a slowly recovering population?
Comments
EQ like you said.. unless your high level, its not worth it.
LoTRO is a cheap WoW knockoff... regardless of what people say.
DAoC is recovering like a cancer patient... slow at first, Classic servers have Normal population.. there are people at EVERY level range... from low.... to mid... to high. Grouping isnt hard to come by, a few words here and there and your in a good group.
EVERYONE misses the old days of DAoC.. the random pickup groups out in salisbury plains... the crazy new car smell of the game. but remember the game IS over 5 years old. its not new anymore.. some people get very set in their routines. But ive found that while hunting in classic zones someone will wander by with a low level guy and ask "can i join" ill say yes... and before you know it have an 8 man PUG. and we are flying through levels and exp and having a BLAST. This game is still VERY VERY fun, and leveling is NEVER a chore. with recent updates the graphics rival those of NEW games, and the community and gameplay are far better then that of say WoW or LoTRO.... for the fact that over half of the people playing are 25+
So to relive my days when I fully enjoyed it, I should hit up the Classic Server... Fair enough. What is the state of Midgard and Hibernia currently? You speak like an Alb and I have my reservations against THOSE folk ;-) I've played most outrealmers my entire DAoC career.
Also, my last little bit, what about the non-classics servers. I have a level 49 ranger on Percival or something like that, would that cluster still be ok or would it be like the symptoms I described earlier? I'm all for coming back to DAoC, probably gonna try the 14 day trial of EQ II to tide me over for a little bit but I'm almost positive I'll be coming back to DAoC.
As well, the age question doesn't really bother me, I bought the game on release at 15 and was more mature than 3/4 of the population, I turn 20 on Sunday and I'm still convinced I'm more mature than most MMO gaming populations and carry myself that way. I'm mostly concerned about the availability of pick up groups and the quality of the players. I really don't care if someone's an immature 13 year old so long as they can play their class well.
Most people suggest a classic server (I am one of them). If you stick with DAOC for a while, you can always try out a TOA server etc.
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
I mean just do a 14-day trial and see thats what im doing. I was a long daoc fan then finnaly caved into WoW when i got fed up with DAoC. But after reading up on some things i really wanna try it out again.
I just recently reopened my old Daoc account, and i'm having a blast. The level 20 bgs are always hopping, and if you want to just level, there are crazy sick awesome camp bonuses everywhere. Grouping is fun, and while server pops on the ToA servers are kinda low, the clustering and the rvr is worth it.
I haven't tried out the classic servers because honestly, i don't wanna level from 1 - 20 ever again. God bless the /level .
i hope you enjoy your daoc return
im also considering to return.. too many bad games out there.
Thanks for all the input. I'm kinda spread all around for playing but I'm primarily on Iseult, Percival, and Bedevere, might open up on classics again just to indulge in the game I fell in love with and the higher populations.
If anyone is active on those servers, I'd encourage a get together, I could use some friends.
You know that you can go to camelot herald and check the population of the server clusters? The ToA clusters are really low considering that every player probably has a bot logged in as well. The classic clusters don't seem too bad, but they are nothing like they used to be I too am considering coming back. I am so damn bored with the "next generation" MMOs. DAoC is the best MMO that I have played. Do they still require like an eight hour waiting period before you can switch between realms on the same cluster? I had leveled up a Mid and an Alb on the classic servers and can't decide which one I wanna stick with.
Which FF Character Are You?
All i have to say to all you old daoc vets out there is... try it. I came back after a long period of time and am having a blast. It didnt take me a long time to get my hunter to 50, and most, if not all of the bgs are action packed. Id say do it, get back in game and relive some of the old days, when daoc was charging full steam.
I came back and reopened my old account and went right to the classic servers. People are nice and very helpful and i can see daoc making a huge comeback somewhere down the road.
Aye i just came back and wow. So easy to level. Especially in BG's got at lvl 10, 100k+ exp for just 1 kill. Ya it kicks ass.
