Been playing the 14-day trial for a few days now. I don't get it. So I kill things, complete missions and get new clothes. What else is there to do or is that it? Is there housing? Is there crafting? Is there social areas like cantinas? What is going on here?

Welcome to the Matrix(Online).
You've done everything there is! Nothing more to do - move along.
The main feature of MxO is it's continuing story and daily live events, as well as it's strong RP and event ran community.
Theres crafting in the form of coding, socialising around popular hardlines and the forums.
Go see your org's archivist for some mission archive tokens, get involved in the story thats being told and when your done go out there and experience it all around you - have discussions with players, read event recaps on the forums, communicate with your liasions, get into some live events, do some RP and kick some ass.
I mean, really, whats the goal of most MMOs past level up, get stronger, get better loot and access more of the world? Its the basis of these things because it's fun afterall =P

Hah Sad but true.
First I want to thank SkyJackel for the trial key. I'll give it a fair shake during the 14 day trial, but at the momen I'm also confused.
It seems I have an auto-attack. I fire my shotgun, and it keeps firing. I don't do anything else? No dodgin bullets? Do I click on other abilities during the fight such as WoW or LOTRO?
My sound cuts out so that all I hear is the music. No footsteps, no gun shots. Is there a fix for this?
Thanks.

Sounds like you're only using free fire combat, which is, like you said, quite like conventional MMO auto attacking.
If you want some more involving stuff start delving into interlock a little, its the other button next to your free fire next to your hotbar, that'll pull ya into close combat when things can get a little more exciting.
And yes there are hotbar abilities like in other mmos, they're actually the main focus of the combat, you just need to keep progressing down your ability trees as you level and before you know it you'll be pulling after special ability after special ability.
It's just a little slow to start with, you'll get there, don't worry.
