4 easy questions...
- what makes the mmorpg genre successful?
= it's interactive entertainment, not as boring as staring at a movie or tv
- What are the typical rules of mmorpgs?
= those vary, you can do research for these, there are some moral rules that exist in most like not taking rare loot w/out following the rules or chatting about who needs it most
- What multiplayer/network options do mmorpgs offer?
= say what, uh packet passing via the net?
- What do you think will be the future trends of mmorpg gaming?
= more website integration, i expect more clicks ingame that take me to websites merging the game world with the real one
No one worded answers
= you are lucky if people even participate, you are not in the position to make demands, no one gets an A for making you happy or helping you and you forgot to tack on a "please"
Cheers for your input, i didnt want one worded answers because im doing a study which needed qualatitive data and when i posted this questionaire on another forum i got really bad answers
Answers will be so relative to persons own opinions and if You have played mmorpgs, You could answer them to You self.
1. Companies can charge players money even the time players are playing to game. Also mmorpgs allows multible players in same game, what many single games did not do well.
2. If You know orginal meaning of the RPG, then You pretty much know what allmost all mmorpgs are all about. Basicly sayed, most mmorpgs are just about character development done by leveling (wasting time).
3. What You mean by options?
4. Your question is just peoples own wishes and opinions, because no-one knows what will happen. In my opinion mmorpgs becomes more and more virtual word simulations. At the moment they seem to get simplifyed linear leveling story theme games, while trying to offer everyting something by copying other mmorpgs features.

- what makes the mmorpg genre successful?
A game that beats the rest in all aspects of gaming. Has great graphics, good pvp & pve elements, has good game mechanics and gameplay, Good buy/sell system, Sick looking armor that makes you drool for more. A challenging level system so noobs don't hit the high end levels like WoW. Kool looking mounts, flying mounts would be nice, probably the only thing blizzard ever did right in their no substance mmorpg WoW. And a lot of other small things.
- What are the typical rules of mmorpgs?
Don't make trash expansion's and waste your money on a trash reporting system like blizzard ent. decided to do. Spend most of your resources on making new innovative content, because no one would really care if they got called a noob the other day. Server status must be up 99% of the time not including maintenance downtime. A million other little quirks!
- What multiplayer/network options do mmorpgs offer?
In-game voice chat would be nice if it isn't buggy, have auction house updates sent to your phone psp etc.. No disconnections every hour due to cheap servers(Blizzard noobs). Good server strength to handle high server loads with minimal lag.
- What do you think will be the future trends of mmorpg gaming?
Lush graphics, a mix of pvp and pve for all types of players, more emphasis on solo leveling or smalling group play. Probably not untill 2009-2010 games but the ability to sell and buy items through self business setups. gameplay functionality is a main focus above all. And FFXI makes a better dragon, and keeps the Ninja in their up coming mmorpg. Codemasters goes bankrupt along with other trash companies, blizzard stops working on trash WoW and makes a diablo III.
P.S To all the previous psoters, you can't answer the questions because you guys are noobs with no substance.
1) Massive hype, easy lowest common denominator gameplay, psychologically addictive gameplay perfected over years of development (which is also why MMOs have so many similarities, they know what works), and the very nature of social animals...MMOs are a very social medium and that's attractive to the majority of people.
2) Not sure I understand the question...but typically there has to be 1) Repetition that's disguised by a well designed gameworld, 2) Scaling level of accomplishment (carrot on a stick), and 3) character development...people like to feel like they're gaining in power over time, they want new abilities, new clothes/armor, new items, etc. This also ties into carrot on a stick
3) Definitely don't understand this question. You might consider explicating.
4) No idea, the genre is still way too young for me to be able to predict. Who would have thought even three years ago that we would be where we are now? And that was just in 2004 with the lead up to World of Warcraft and Everquest 2, I don't remember thinking WoW would beat EQ2 let alone absolutely destroy it. I think the paid subscription model will succeed over the free-to-play model. I also think the EQ-clones aren't going anywhere anytime soon. That addictive gameplay formula works, the most they can hope to do in the future is better mask the grind (something that WoW was pretty successful at doing at first and I think future MMOs will be even better at).
