In 2001, Razorwax announced the development of a game called Darkfall.
For many of us, Darkfall meant we could re-live the glory of the finest MMORPG years ever in a brand new environment created with stability and a modern gaming experience.
But from there, arose many questions, most of which still go unanswered.
It's been six years since I first heard of Darkfall. Six Years. Do you people realize what has happened in that time?
Think about these:
www.youtube.com/watch - First, look at what 6 years does to your body.
Remind yourself of how old you were six years ago.
Where did you live? Where did you work? Or go to school?
Remember when George Bush was in his first term as president? Yeah.
Gas prices averaged $1.35
Barry Bonds wasn't close to Hank Aaron, or much less Babe Ruth....
The Boston Redsox were still cursed.
Then realize that six years ago, 9/11 happened.
Just 9 days before that, Blizzard just announced the development of World of Warcraft.
I'm just trying to put it in perspective fellas. We've been waiting a LONG TIME for this, and you wanna know why? Because it's worth it, right? I didn't apply for the forums on here back then, but my hats off to those who have stuck around on the forums since their inception. I know this game will rock and although I can't wait much longer, I know I have to. Patience is a virtue I guess. And after all, it is just a game. But it's been a long long time. Here's to however much longer we have......

Hmm very interesting. I never thought of it by all those historical landmarks. Wow! that really dates this game huh. It makes me wonder that if they are using the same engine they started with and if so it's gotta be out dated before it is even brought to life.
no game was scrapped in 2003 or so and redone keep the same concepts tho let me find 2 diffrent screen shots
before redoing of graphics and engine http://www.markeedragon.com/screenshots/showphoto.php/photo/6139/sort/2/cat/3052/page/2

Alot better plus there doing it this way on purpose so 100 vs 100 will be playable on lower end systems
Six years down, six years to go?
I can't imagine, I've been interested in this game for only 6 months, it seems like forever and i cant wait anymore , kudos to all who have stuck it out since the beginning.
no a year at most for release
Maybe they will have a very short beta?
You dont need beta neccesarily with 6 years of internal testing.
You dont need beta neccesarily with 6 years of internal testing.
now they don't need a beta? You fanbois are really grasping at straws now.
lol Sooooo doooomed!
"You dont need beta neccesarily with 6 years of internal testing."
6 years of development is not 6 years of internal testing... It's 6 years of development.
and if anything this game would probably need a hell of alot longer to be in testing then something like world of warcraft for example considering they never even made a mmorpg before and built it on completely unproven technology.
LOL this game is so far from being launched still it's just laughable...
Who the hell is funding this?? They seriously need to go take some business courses or something. This would of been cancelled years ago if it was actually being built by a reputable studio.
Interesting, I've released a lot of software over the years (of course, none of them were games) and I don't recall ever holding a beta.....
Its is quite possible that DF will release with a limited beta.... they aren't mandatory. Most MMO game companies have used them because they don't want to spend the cash for good in-house testing..... and most single player games release w/o a beta as I recall.
And as was proven by GANDH/PE..... hosting a beta doesn't mean we'll ever see a playable game.

Every major MMORPG that I can think of has had a public BETA. Are you saying that companies like Turbine or EA don't have the $$$ for in-house testing and just settle for public testing?? I gurantee you they have both in-house testing as well as public beta testing.
MMORPG's need public testing periods not only for bug testing and stability but also to generate hype and sales and that's why it has always been done...

Not true. Every game gets tested. Either internally by players who's jobs are to test the games pre release or by beta testers outside.Games simply do not release without being tested in some way. Firstly to find bugs and furthermore to polish gameplay.
The mere fact that the people developing this game said "We're not looking forward to a long beta testing period" should have everyone seeing the red flags and sirens going off.
Who says something like that??? That shows an almost unbelievable sign of inexperience for someone supposadely developing a commercial grade MMOG.
No wonder they couldn't find a Publisher.
I can see the meetings:
"Publisher: So have you reached Beta and how is testing going?"
"DF developers: Nah we're not looking forward to a long beta testing period"
crickets chirping.....
"Publisher: Get back to us when you've reached a public Beta.
Also as was already stated Aventruine IS their publisher in case you didn't realize this and they were looking for another publisher that could do it better.
In reality, a public beta test SHOULD be basically a stress test. At the time a public beta test starts, all features should be implemented and there should be no major bugs. This of course is a dream since most bugs can't be found until lots of people start playing. Most MMO companies now days have a habit of pushing out unfinished games. Even at launch these games are still missing many of the features that were promised. These games should not have even been pushed into beta. IMO they are focusing on making the game as complete as possible before the public gets their hands on it so all there is left to do is balancing and polish. How can you get any balancing done if you are continually adding new features and most of the effort is focussed on getting these new features done.
Let's face it, at this point they need a rock solid beta or the game will fail. With public sentiment as it is now, having a public beta with features lacking will just further put people off.
yea the publishers paying you are really gasping to give darkfall a bad name 2 you bassiccly just being annoying sorry ghoul
they
I could wait another 2 years if they can pull off what it promises.
I have yet to play an MMO that has lived up to its hype but if this is 3/4 as good as it looks we could still have a massive success.
No offense but he could bash this game all day long and if it releases and is as good as they claim nothing he can say is going to stop the word of mouth (guild forums and stuff) from slowing down its subscribers.

Sad.....but true lol.
ok let me tell you why you do beta tests.
This is just a few exambles goes for alot of games but far from all.
1. To find ERRORS that the testers has NOT found and fix em.
2. Stress test! you do that to see how many ppl the servers can possible support and what happends if there gets too many in a certain area.
3. Different hardware configurations and Operative Systems setups languege etc. How do they react to the game. And how many DUMB thing can the customers possible do to their systems that will impact THEIR gameplay.
thats just a few reasons.. and for you to remember.. aparently they had to rewrite alot of the game code due to new and better technology avaible! 6 years of internal testing with a very limited amount of testers. dosnt TEST those 3 things good enough.. and proberly never will
yes we understand that but form all we know they have alot of internal tester not sure baout this but they could under a heavy nda im pretty sure they have more than 30
First, I don't believe you that you never held a beta of software. All software goes through a beta (note - not necessarily an open beta the public tests). Beta is not an event - it is a state the software being developed is at. It represents software that is going through feature testing. Even the most basic databases go through a beta period. The key is that most business software does all of this internally out of view of the public. What you are saying is that you never test your software when it is nearly complete. If that were really the case, you would not be in software development any longer.
Most MMOs do big external beta tests not because of a lack of internal testers, but because the software is so complex that there is no way internal testing will catch everything. It also allows them to compile vast sums of data on the various systems to make sure there are no unexpected imbalances. This is absolutely critical in an MMO.
The Gods and Heroes debacle is a key example of why you hold betas with outside testers for an MMO. If they had never held the external beta their own views would have biased the way they look at the game and they likely would have released it. Instead, the external testers were so unimpressed with the game that the powers that be finally opted to stop throwing good money after bad. G&H of course was screwed up in a lot of ways and PE needs to take a serious look at who is calling the shots but that is an entirely different subject.
