Dear Customer,
We regret to announce that Lucasarts will no longer be producing Star Wars Galaxies: The Complete Online Adventures as a physical retail package on CD or DVD. We will therefore cancel your pending order for this item. As direct downloading of this game eliminates the need for shipping costs and shipping lead times, we hope this is a satisfactory alternative for you. We again apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.
Sincerely,

Waiting for SWTOR
Wow no surprise there, my local EB Games won't even order SOE game cards anymore and I knew one of the clerks there that always dissed SWG when the NGE came out. Last time I saw a SWG game it was in a Sony Station pass package.
Something's definately up, all we can do is wait and see, LA may be doing something right here.
I think what we're seeing is SOE finally understanding that the demand for SWG is not increasing, and having a digital download only will save them the money/effort of keeping it on store shelves.
I believe it's just an indication that SWG is truely entering it's twilight years.
Not creating a physical package makes sense to me.... but I don't see it as a herald for a new game based on and IP...... just an unreleated event.....

welcome bane. cool sig . LoL
ttrust me. bioware's mmo is star wars.
What an ironic thing. SWG:TCOA is the first mmorpg i bought as a retail package, is hard to find retail packages of mmorpgs here in spain. I don tknow If LA want to close the game but i know, as of today, 2 of the 3 european servers usualy are at medium population, I can talk about the US servers. You find people playing here and there and there tons of player cities actives. Some people here may want all of us to think that SWG is death, I took the trial and I found too many players and I found that the game is actually fun so I bought it. Im playing right now and the game is not death, it can be better, yeah, but is not death.
No longer making boxes means the visibility in physical stores is reduced to zero. It also means no more hits on places like Amazon.com. All this means that there will be a LOT less new gamers who see the box and think 'hey, this might be fun'. It does sound like a deliberate build-down, unless they're actually planning on an advertisement campaign to lure people to the direct download sites.

Well it makes sense.. without getting into a long discussion of the NGE or BioWare .. oh btw BioWare was bought by EA.. so even IF they were making a Star Wars MMO... it would now make the NGE looked like a stellarly awesome game .. anyway.. moving on..
Stores have X amount of shelf space.. They like to use that space for products that people actually buy.
Heck our local GameStop... used to have 3 shelves for PC.. now its like a book case.
So going to a digital download version pretty much makes sense.. but it also.. shows just how popular that game is.. as opposed to the LEC interview that talked about "tons of new players" so no need for a classic server.... *cough cough* (that coughing is all the spice they moved to LEC after it was removed from SWG)
Sounds good that they are putting alot more funding into digital distribution of the game, Postage is getting old!

I'm waiting for the next xpac. It will be all about dropping your toon into the trash compactor on the first deathstar where you have a choice between being eaten by the monster or crushed by the closing walls.
Incidentally it is the same xpac where they introduce mandatory permadeath. True story.

p.s. Sorry, couldn't resist, feel free to ignore my post, I'm just bored and hoping to get a laugh or three.
Exactly. You hit it.
Exactly. You hit it.
Well,
why do I still see other titles on the shelves...WoW, GW, CoH, CoV? Why do companies even produce a hardcopy to begin with? It seems to me that if SWG was still selling, they would have shelf space. As it is, NO ONE is buying the game anymore?
They have already made the statement that there are no plans for future EXPANSIONS. This is yet another sign of the times...SWG will not even be here after 2009.
Thanks Solaris. I'll just sit and wait and hopefully it will be a SW MMO. But I gotta admit it just won't feel the same if I won't be able to wear Storm Trooper armor. Granted, there's the mandalore armor, but lets be honest, aside from Jedi, Vader, X Wing, Tie Fighter, Han and the falcon, Storm troopers just scream Star Wars, I'll miss them because they were the perfect fodder for my guns lol! but also because the armor looked awesome. Ahhh well... I miss SWG immensely (pre CU) but I'd still wait for BioWare's MMO
Its a 4 year old game thats not had an expansion for 2 years its no surprise at all this is it?
Think about it how many games do you see stocked retail that date from 2003? not many if any at all tbh
Good point... at this point I see it this way... SOE has already done ALL they could in their power (or rather... wanted to do in their power) to try and spread the word about SWG, TV ads, interviews etc. But this eventually is just too expensive, and so is putting retail boxes on the shelves. So now basically, to save themselves some money and "earn" money in the same process, they're relying now on word of mouth of current players to visit the site and hope that maybe they'll be gullible enough to buy the full version online.
Many local retailers stopped carrying SWG quite sometime ago. It wasn't worth the inventory or sales space. Now it will no longer be carried by net retailers, so if anyone looks it up on Amazon.com (example), it will say "No Longer Available", which may indicate the plug being pulled to any interested party. Not that the well earned, horrible reviews helped sell SWG anyway, LOL! Out of sight, out of mind....
SWG is quickly fading to complete Station Access Pass filler. No upgrades, no expansions, and the chapter publishes will continue to be further and further a part. The population will plod along at 10k-20k. As long as the fanbois are willing to fork over $20.00 every now and then for a new, on-line gift from a revamped digital download, it maybe a little longer before it is free to download for Pass Holders.
Everquest 1 is still going strong but you cant buy the disk as you have to download so are you saying EQ1 is dying too?
Well seems that Jake Neri was telling the truth:
At this point, we have no plans for a retail expansion. Rather, both LucasArts and SOE made the decision to focus our efforts on the Chapter Adventures, which will deliver high value content to our players while maintaining the flexibility to adjust to what our players ask us for as the game continues.
...
There are currently no sequels planned. We remain committed to SWG and feel that there are still plenty of stories to tell in the game.

The future for Star Wars: Galaxies is very bright. - Jake Neri

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.
