Who ever first said song of fire and ice by Martin gets my vote.
Second is forgotten realms. So much open ended lore and such a huge world you could update that game for ever.
The third no one has suggested yet. A series called Malazan books of the Fallen. Steven Erikson. Huge epic stories with many different angles and factions. If you have not read any of these books do so.
Lastly World War Z. Zombie killin fun, Also a great book.
Kings and Sons of God Travel on their way from here Calming restless mobs Easing all of their, all of their fear Strange times are here.
While I certainly love many of the unique worlds fantasy writers produce, I'm not a big fan of playing in an established / well documented time lines. This is why I never played SWG and had no interest to play LOTRO. IMO it works a lot better when you take something like the Wheel of Time and either advance or reverse the time line to a point where the major characters aren't even a live. It allows developers to add something new (and hopefully exciting) to an already existing setting and players don't find themselves feeling like secondary / minor scrubs to a major story that has already been played out (you know the outcome).
As to a possible candidate, Terry Goodkinds "Sword of Truth" world might not be to bad. With Wizards, War-Wizards, Confessors, Mord-Sith, Dreamwalkers and a host of other characters it could offer a good deal of interesting twists (perhaps set it well in advance of Richard's time frame, when the Wizards were at war with each other).
I like World War Z but have doubts that it would function well as an mmo. You basically have 1 enemy and that gets tired fast. I know someone is going to point out that various criminals or feral children could be enemies but I think that is stretching it some.
A book that would make a good mmo...hmmm how about the Bible?
"Man I just got my priest a piece of the the true cross and now I am veritable resurrecting machine in missions!!"
And you would have access to various tribes with stereotypical abilities also
"I chose to be an Assyrian so that during city raid I could buff my group with damage bonuses."
"Yeah well, Assyrians suck. Sargon the II sucks most of all. Jews are where its at, our banking bonus gives us the economic edge to control our enemies."
If you are not being responded to directly, you are probably on my ignore list.
My first choice would be an MMO based on Roger Zelaznys' Amber books, those who have read them understand why..
My second choice would be an MMO based on the Elric novels by Michael Moorcock.
My third choice would be an MMO based on Raymond E Feists' magician books.

Yea this would have to PvP though considering the headcount in the books. Best thing is there are already factions / kingdoms set up for battle and conflict. Endless options.
The other one I had is a series / book 'Amtrak Wars'. That would allow sci-fi, swords and magic to be blended just like in the book itself. Still one of my all time favourites.
My first choice would be a MMO based on the Books of the Swords series. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Books_of_Lost_Swords It would make for a great PvP game where world PvP is key since finding and taking the swords from your enemies would be the endgame. Imagine if you will Sword bearers protected by their guilds fighting for castles like L2 or even more free for all PvP like SB. Make the swords drop on death or disappear on death so they have to be searched for.
My second choice would be Mechwarrior, followed by either Ravenloft, Forgotten Realms, or Dragon Lance all of which I would like to play a good MMO based on.
With the glut of crappy MMOs on the market, it would seem someone would have converted every halfway successful pen & paper RPG into an MMO by now. DDO was a HUGE dissapointment, but I hope Wizards of the Coast will someday get someone else to try remaking it into something successful. I know RPGs themselves are not really what was meant by the thread, but a lot of them have spawned literature beyond the source books. Shadowrun, World of Darkness (Vampire: The Masquerade), D&D, Rifts, Cyberpunk, or Call of Cthulhu to name a few. I know this has been tried with a few games, but the attempts were poor and half-hearted it seems. I'm glad Warhammer is getting it's shot, and 40k has been announced, but no Battletech? Maybe if 40k succeeds... You'd think that after CoH/CoV's success, Marvel or DC Comics would have teamed up with someone to create a cool superhero MMO. Lots of books and content there.
Marvel and Cryptic (makers of CoH and CoV) announced a partnership to develop the Marvel superhero MMO. Cryptic was quick to clarify that they have not down-sized the CoH/CoV teams, and that they are continuing with their commitment to those games and to ongoing free expansions that they call issues. We've had 3 issues since the announcement, and in my mind they've been the best, so I see the commitment is their in deeds not words alone.
Rather than listing these out again, I will just cut and paste from a previous post:
Some of the IPs already listed would make great MMOs:
Dune
If done correctly, this could be wonderful. Politics was always very important in this story. I would hope that this would carry over to the MMO.
Mechwarrior
I have always envisioned this MMO as similar to EVE, but with a little more emphasis on PVE.
Underworld
Lycans and vampires and men, oh my!
Transformers
This could also be fantastic if done right. Instead of groups, players could combine to make super transformers.
Starship Troopers
Who doesn't like killing bugs.
KOTOR
Jedi vs. Sith
Wheel of Time
All of the players (Aes Sedai) could have a stable of warders to let them take on different roles. Maybe even a function to play as the warder instead of the Aes Sedai.
A few more IPs that I believe would make good MMOs are:
Chronicles of the Cheysuli
You could choose to be a Cheysuli or an Ihlini. Who doesn't want a Lir?
Cabal by Clive Barker (aka Nightbreed)
The citizens of Meridian fight for survival against the parts of humanity who are trying to wipe them out.
Chronicles of Riddick
Go, Go Necromongers!
Deathgate Cycle
Patryn against the Saryn. Both races could be trapped in the Labyrinth. Instead of levels, character progression could be measured by gates.
Van Helsing
Human witch hunters face off against various supernatural beings. This MMO could be a world where human myths and nightmares of every culture find life.
"Those who dislike things based only on the fact that they are popular are just as shallow and superficial as those who only like them for the same reason."

actually i think i read somewhere on gamespot that marvel has an MMO comming out where u play as superheroes, not sure on the details, but i remeber it when i was looking up console MMOs somehwere, it was on x360 pc and ps3, not sure if its 100% true
A series of books I always thought would make for a good MMO based on cultural variances, racial differences, exotic terrain, and sci-fi elements would be the Barsoom (Martian) Series...
Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote 7 or so books in the early 1900's after he wrote Tarzaan. The books are pretty cool and extremely creative for the time... You could change it to be Mars in the past so there are no issues with the fact we now know Mars has no current civilizations on it...

Though I love the books the Sword of Truth never crossed my mind but it should have, even has pvp factions with the old world vs. the new world. Would probably have to be set when Zedd was 1st wizard and Panis Rahl was his arch enemy for story reasons though. I would play it!
The Jon Shannow novels take place in a future earth where the poles have shifted, swamping earth's current land masses, and leaving bare the sea beds. Human society endures, stuck in a kind of post-apocalyptic frontier lifestyle. In the first novel, the level of technology has slipped back to percussion cap pistols, and is quite static until a nation of a satanists re-invent repeating firearms and mount a crusde. Facing these 'Hellborn' fanatics is Jon Shannow, a particularly bloody wandering 'brigand-slayer' and seeker after mythical jerusalem.
I would suggest the Redwall series. Plenty of race options, class possiblilities are endless, epic wars and quests, and a huge and open world you could do (almost) anything with.
The dune series would work well. Also, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (well that whole series actually).
Kazoo
Enders game would work really well. So many options to play different factions etc. However I think Dune would be an easier MMO to make regarding clear differences with factions, creatures etc.
* Alan Dean Fosters' books set in the Commonwealth. For battles, you have the Humanx alliance, an alliance between humans and Thranx (insects), the warlike reptilian Ann and other alien species. Varies rpg stories are set in that world such as the Flinx adventures. You can be a sting ship pilot, freighter/trader, scientist, member of the Church, explore new worlds, discover new aliens and find clues for discovering ancient alien artifacts.
* E. E. Doc Smith's Lensman series.
* John Carter's Warlord of Mars series
The Eragon movie and Eragon computer game both have bad reviews. I loved the books but so far attempts to transplant the story into other media have been woeful.
My choices would be: A Forgotten Realms MMO (as suggested by Loke666) and Battletech/Mechwarrior (as suggested by Dreadlich)
Yeah yeah yeah
Battletech will be great. 5 factions and the empire, then the outer clans. Lots of types of mech, armored vehicles infantry. LAM (Land and air mechs), air forces, jump ships and drop ships.
How about Dune? We have the empire, the Atreides lots of planets, lots of plots and conspiracies.
Forgotten realms is definitely a thumbs up, hmm, have we seen too many elves, dwarves and orcs passing through our monitors lately? Can I see a laser gun instead of a composite bow please?
Dune would be perfect you could have Harkonean. The univers is huge tons of pvp.Tons of pve content

I would like to see an mmo based on the hitchikers guide to the galaxy books, it definatly would be funny and sci-fi
playing eq2 and two worlds

Tuesdays With Morrie. Hands down the obvious choice.

MM - Eternal Champion series(s)
Lots more, but these have a wide breadth and lots of depth.
