Sounds cool. I hope they follow the lines more of Morrowind than Oblivion, game-wise. But then, if they just started, it will be years and years to come. But its good they make a MMO of Tamriel. Their world is really worth making a MMO out of it. Personally, in all my 20 years of RPG playing, I thought Tamriel one of the most interesting fantasy worlds I have seen. Lets hope it comes true. ^^

Here is some more about it : http://gaming.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=10289
It's been unearthed that the parent company of Bethseda Softworks,ZeniMax Media, the guys behind the popular Elder Scrolls series, have recently purchased a website domain entitled 'ELDERSCROLLSONLINE.COM'. So, it makes complete sense that they must be planning an MMO based on the role-playing series...right?
Well, not necessarily, but it is bound to happen, isn't it? It's an evolutionary step for the series. Where can they possibly go and improve on the epic Elder Scrolls V: Oblivion?
Bethseda are yet to comment on the news, but back in February, the studio's VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines did say say the company would only take on the challenge if they could find a fresh idea and something that no one has ever tried before.
It's interesting that only last week, ZeniMax Media received a $300 million investment from providence equity partners to help "finance massively multiplayer games"
Check out the full press release::
October 25, 2007 – ZeniMax Media Inc. today announced the closing of a $300 million investment by Providence Equity Partners Inc. for convertible preferred stock of the Company. The proceeds of the investment will be used to fund future growth, increase game development and publishing, facilitate acquisitions, and finance massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs).
ZeniMax Media was founded in 1999 by Robert A. Altman, its Chairman and CEO, and through wholly owned subsidiaries creates and publishes original interactive entertainment content for gaming consoles (including the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, and the Nintendo DS and Wii), the PC, handheld/wireless devices, and online gaming. Last year its wholly owned subsidiary, Bethesda Softworks, released The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion® which was voted Best Game of 2006. Bethesda’s upcoming title, Fallout® 3, has already been featured on the cover of more than 20 magazines worldwide and has won accolades as one of most anticipated games for 2008.
"We believe that Providence will be an ideal partner for us as we build our businesses worldwide in the years ahead. Providence shares our strategic vision for the Company and is excited by the opportunity to help us move into a position of leadership in this industry,” said Mr. Altman.
“We are pleased to partner with one of the best managed companies in the videogame industry,” said Michael Dominguez, a Managing Director of Providence. “ZeniMax Media has an outstanding series of proven interactive entertainment content and a burgeoning position in the rapidly growing global video game market. We look forward to working with Robert to build value at ZeniMax Media over the long-term.”
Mr. Dominguez will join the Company’s Board of Directors, which is currently led by Mr. Altman and includes ZeniMax Media President Ernest Del, Leslie Moonves (President and CEO of CBS), Harry E. Sloan (Chairman and CEO of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.), Robert S. Trump (President of Trump Management), noted film and television producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr.

Great another great rpg ruined by turning into a mmorpg Youlda wanted a mmorpg made by them but not in place of elder Scrolls 5, i mean the only good thing about the game is the first person combat and the storyline and the quests and you can't do any of that in mmorpgs.
Argonians + MMO = win
Also a skill-based fantasy MMO will be a nice change, I'm getting tired of class based games.
I hope this is true.
If that is true then they'll be the first big name company to make a sandbox mmo. Its really hard to see them creating a linier game when its completly against the companies motto for their games, cant remember it off the top of my head but its something like do what you want when you want.
I would rather that they stick with morrowinds type of gameplay than oblvions though, oblivion was a good game but it was so much easier than morrowind. Wonder if the game will feature their radient AI system turned up to max that would be cool.
Dont give your hopes up on it looking like obvlion though, probably a slightley better looking morrowind its hard to see the graphics being oblivions standard in a mmo.
edit: btw miffy or whatever your name was, it is possible to have a mmo with a good story and good quests, just because no one has done it yet doesnt mean someone cant ;p also its not the only good thing about the game, the dungeons are very well designed, the amount of choice you have is great as well, rich world to explore etc theres no reason why that can not be transferred into an mmo.
This would be wonderful imo. The world is rich and has a good story. I think they need to work on more lore though to make it an MMO. There is a bunch of lore already but, to me, it is not really all that deep. Just a bunch of small sniplets with some a little longer and a short story here and there. They need to tie them all together into many long stories since my brain gets too confused trying to read all the small things and tie them together myself. I guess what I would like to see if more along the novelette idea.
Of course, many do not care about the lore, which is plain to see in the games I have played from EQ to WoW. So, it could be made without the lore. It just enhances the gameplay for me to find things out that pertain to the actual lore.

If this is going to be some sort of Oblivion MMO, count me out. Morrowind was superior to Oblivion in almost every way but graphics. If Oblivion-style games are the future for the Elder Scrolls then I want nothing to do with it.
BTW, someone referred to Oblivion as Elder Scrolls V. It's Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
And frankly, I think they should stick with single player and ditch the console, but for some reason I haven't been consulted by Bethesda...
I liked Oblivion more myself and loved how you could instant travel to places you've been cause wasting time running everywhere got annoying + i love how levels scale because i don't like having to level up, gets boring.

Yeah i like complex games but i just couldnt get into morrowind. The level system was a big plus for me it meant i could do anything in the game and it not be over the top hard becuase i hadnt leveled. Personaly i hate how there are so many mmos coming out i wanna play maby this fallout online if they get the money SGW WAR PotBS and once i get a better computer HGL. plsu w.e bioware is cooking up.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.
If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

miffy, if you played a lot of Morrowind, then you probably know that there are 3 ways to shorten travel in the game: Boats, teleporters, and those strider thingies (the beasts). If you know the places where each mode overlaps with one of the others, you can actually get around the island pretty quickly. Yes, there are still some places that are hard to get to, but that was fine with me.
I *hated* the scaled levelling. I never felt as if I were progressing, getting tougher, stronger, and better. What was worse is that I didn't progress far along the main quest line until I was level 17 or so: the mobs scaled but the guards didn't; the guards got wasted in moments. I've never liked scaling in a game.
I was very disappointed with Bethesda due to Oblivion.
And I still maintain TES: Online would be the most boring MMO in existence. And this is from someone who has been a fan since Daggerfall.

Life sucks, buy a helmet.
Level scaling was a nice idea, but it seems to really fail to deliver on the character progression aspect of an RPG. As mentioned you never feel like you are making any progress as the mobs all get tuffer to match you. It's nice to be able to go back to the lower areas and kill the mobs that destoryed you earlier in the game. It could be argued that there is no reason to have leveling or skill progression at all if the mobs are just going to scale to your level.
Same here. I loved Morrowind even though I first played it several years after it was released, and the expansions + mods really added a lot of fun after I had eaten through all the original content. One of my favorite games of all time.
If Bethesda made a new original Elder Scrolls and made it an mmo, I'd try it out. If its just Oblivion online...meh. Wouldn't they have to greatly reduce the graphics for an mmo too? Might as well go back to Morrowind style over Oblivion, since Oblivion was more about graphics and less about substance. Quicker travel would be good, but not instant poof travel like in Oblivion; a lot of the fun of Morrowind was finding hidden doors and ruins while traveling on foot. It did get excessive, certainly, but to get rid of it entirely is going too far, in my opinion.
Also, I hope it won't take place in a small and undifferentiated area, like in Oblivion. It would be awesome if we could get continents again, or even just one continent. Vanguard could even do that, so certainly Bethesda can, and probably make it much more interesting as opposed to lots of dead space.
Oh joy. Oh Happy Day. Yet another fantasy MMO in the works. I just can't wait. Now who would want a Sci-Fi MMO anyway? Can't you see that all of them are shutting down? Nobody wants to see a Fallout MMO. Bring on the Pointy Hats, Pointy Ears and Pointy Sticks. Just can't have enough of those.
Yikes.

"I know what you're thinking: 'Why, oh WHY, didn't I take the BLUE pill?'"
Also, if anyone can pull off a fantasy-setting sandbox game, it's the folks at Bethesda.
Apart from Argonians (come on, you know they rock ) and non-class based open-ended gameplay I think it's really early to be anticipating anything. I doubt Oblivion's style of play would work in an online setting, as well (lag + twitch combat is a big no)
