Hellgate London Review, By Vutall
Hellgate: London is by far the most fun game I have played out of these genra's: MMO, RPG, aRPG, FPS, Survival-horror. In all my time as a gamer, never has a game combined these elements so well.
Graphics (out of 10)): While many people complain that the graphics in Hellgate are outdated, I do not believe so. First, you have to understand that the world enviroments ((besides the hubs)) are randomly generated every time you start the game. Not exactly an easy task to do, so a little skimpiness on the details is permitted. Also, the hordes of enemies you fight is also taken into consideration. The character details are decent, but they could be improved, However, once you start gaining armor and weapons, you hardly see your own character, and the armors are all really amazing looking. For the demon models, they did very well. I would say this game looks as good as any Source game on the market right now ((read Half Life 2)) minus the realism in characters.
Verdict: 8
Sound ((Out of 10)): The sound design is simply amazing. The moans, groans, roars, howls, and all sorts of hellatious noise made by the demons is extreamly well done. The music score is also very well written, and sets the tone quite well. At times the music changes and you find yourself wondering..."Oh shi...whats around this corner" While I am disapointed that the quest texts arnt voiced ala diablo 2, I do find the random comments NPC's say when you greet them humorous, and well spoken. From the heavy british accents, and the downright...madness of what they speak, it helps paint the picture. I just wish there was more voiceovers for quests.
Verdict: 8
Interface ((Out of 10)): The interface is very well put together, minus a few things. First, the chat system is horendous. I bet half the people out there dont even realize there is a chat. The button to show it isnt very obvious. Also, if you leave the chat popup open, it cuts into other windows when they pop up such as quests rewards. The minimap is well done, and all the windows are easy to navigate. I would like to have the interface be modable, since w0w spoiled me, but I will make due and pray that FSS fixes the chat window.
Verdict: 8
Single Player ((Out of 10)) Single player is well done, but at the moment it is still somewhat buggy. Future patches will hopefully fix the issues it has. I dont really play single player however, as it is lonely and online play is much more fun, especially considering you get more content online.
Verdict: 8
Online play ((Out of 10)) Simply amazing. Think guild wars, where you have hubs that people sit in, and the missions are instanced. Now take loot drops that take a hint from Guild Wars, where the system assigns the loot to players.. but hide the items so only the player who can pick up the item gets to see it. And, if something drops an item, it drops something for everyone. No more are the days of partying, fighting tooth and nail through a map, only to have one person score all the best gear. Everyone walks away with something, and ususally, its something usable. With the added content that is at the moment Multiplayer only, I am very very pleased with HG:L and find it to be my new addiction.
Verdict: 10
Crafting/upgrading ((Out of 10)) Think crafting like w0w, think modding like socketing. Very well done. Modding also makes it possible to use an item for a long, long time before needing an upgrade. The crafting system is still no Star Wars Galaxies, so I am not blown away.
Verdict: 8
Character Development ((out of 10)) Exactly like Diablo 2's stat system, and the skill system is also quite well done. Like w0w's talents, in a way. Verdict: 8
Gameplay: ((Out of 10)) Simply amazing. It combines First Person Shooters, RPG's, Survival-Horror, MMO's, all together in one amazing package, and pulls it off wonderfully. The only downfall is some people will complain of repetitive gameplay, but in all reality, ask yourself. Is w0w repetative? Yes. Is Half Life 2 repetative? Yes. Was Diablo 2 repetative? HELL YES. But that repetition is broken up by the quests, and the story ((for your first play though at least)) Also, the item drops help make the repetativness worth it. Just cut your way through a hundred demons? All you got was crappy gear you dont use..but at your last kill a legendary drops. Totally worth it.
Verdict: 10
Base Points: 20
Total Score: 80/100
Final comments: While the score might not be a 90/100, Hellgate London is definetly my favorite game for the PC. I will play it for quite some time, and with the subscription content promised, I eagerly await to see what will be put out. There are a few downfalls, as I mentioned, but I urge everyone to try this game. Flagship Studios has proven they are here to play ball, and they mean it.

Helped me kill some time while
I wait for my US-Version, coming

I am happy to help people out. I know I skimped on a couple parts, i threw the review together rather quickly. I will be rewriting and polishing it up later. ((Score will stay the same)) and in a few months after some content updates, I will re-review the game
I'm happy that at least someone enjoyed the game.
Indeed. Hellgate is a very fun game and a great alternative to those boring mmo games. Until someone makes a persistent world mmo worth playing I 'll be playing Hellgate for a long time.
