It's not 100% Diablo 2. That's not a bad thing though, as I've already played Diablo 2, and don't care to play it again.
It does have all the bits that made Diablo 1 & 2 fun. However, it's not 100% complete, as EA pushed it out the door a bit early trying to capitalize on Halloween, when Christmas would have been a much better bet, despite the theme of the game.
I will say this, though: The UI sucks. Particularly the chat window. Some of the mobs like to get bugged out, most noticeably the Ravagers, who will jump at you, and get out of synch with the server or something, so you are pumping round after round into them, but the server thinks it's still off over there.
For me, it's ridiculously fun. Enough so that I not only preordered the game, but paid for the lifetime sub as well.
And I will second the person that said that the demo does the game no justice.
The answer is yes. The game has a way of sucking you in. You just have to get one more level, hope for one more special drop.
I enjoy the combat in this game much more than I did D2. I LOVED D2, but I'm very much over the point and click system that it, and all of the other action rpgs use.
I will say that the story in D2 felt deeper, and better written. I really enjoyed the cut scenes in that game. I would like to think that if FSS had their old wallet (Blizzard), they would have put in better cut scenes, and spent more time on the story.
Throw in the fact that this game will be updated regularly, and you have the makings of one very addicting game that will surpass D2 in every way.
Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Been playing it till level 15... Starting with level 10 things do get a lot faster. You get almost hypnotically drawn into "just one more level, just one more run..." The game does rock The gameplay is Diablo-like. Where in "normal" RPGs and FPSs you get a handful of mobs here you have waves - once you realize how overpowered you are in comparison to a single mob you stop measuring your steps and just plow forward to see how many you can take on and survive (a good soundtrack - 50's rock'n'roll in my case - does wonders for the atmosphere)... until you run into a boss when the real fun starts. Level variety: well the game's colors are on the gloomy darkish side to be honest (maybe a bit too much, i'd love some brightly lit surreal levels, future expansions maybe.. Far Cry did a good job of creating the feeling of menace in a tropical paradise setting) and some trepeating tiles may get on your nerves. However as of lvl 15 I've seen some pretty impressive "different" levels - the British Museum, an abandoned park full of zombies and a huge battle between NPCs and masses of mobs (similar to Act5 in D2 but much faster!) As for bugginess - I havent seen anything serious (if at all). There must be something we're missing here since some people are bashing the game heavily on account of this. Dunno, it may be Vista problems or differences between EU and US versions/servers.. I am playing on a strong rig on Win XP and EU server without a subscription (yet )
I agree with most of your post, except the bugginess part. If you have an NVIDIA 8XXX series GPU, hold off buying this game, it causes a lot of display driver crashes, and I haven't figured out how to run it with any degree of stability yet. Yes I've tried different drivers, checked my RAM, and also run it in DX9 mode. Nothing seems to help.
I want you to be perfectly honest with me.... Does HellGate:London give that same magic feel that Diablo 2 once did?
Not quite. There was something special about Baal runs ( did I spell that right?). Also, nothing like getting PK'd while in some remote dungeon. What i do like in HG better than D2 is the questing. I am a little disappointed with lack of grouping in HG or the prospect of guilds. D2 still has a very special place in my heart, whereas, HG may be forgotten mush faster. Now I'm tempted to play D2 again, damn it!
There is definitely a lot of kudos to Daiblo in this game.
Not least the theme.
The game mechanic is the same, run around in third person smiting hordes of monsters and levleing up and picking up stuff.
The maps ae not as good. Not as beautiful and very small. Graphically it is a bit sub par. The netcode is much shoddier than Diablo as is the interface. There may well have been programmers from the Diablo team working on this product, but clealry not all of them.
As a fan of Diablo I have bought this game to play with another Diablo fan frind of mine online. Only the multiplayer is too bugged for this to be much good, and despite both being online and in the same team, we tend to be off soloing in different zones.
Currently the MP is still too bugged for this kind of teamplay to be a realistic option.
It definitely smacks of Diablo and the movie sequences are awesome. However the Mulitplayer is just poor. Poorly designed, poor functionalilty.
It feels like Diablo, but it isn't going to still feel like it in a months time. It is going to be uninstalled within a couple of weeks.
I was a Diablo2 fanatic for a few years, and even ran a D2 guild. Unlike the guy who posted earlier, I feel that Mythos more accurately captures the feel of the Diablo world. In fact, many on the FFS forums call Mythose Diablo III.
HGL has a lot of Diablo's features, but is not Diablo. To me, it feels like Diablo at some points and Quake at other points. It has a lot of the action and randomness of Diablo, but with some FPS stuff going on. The Pinata burst when enemies die is pure Diablo though.

<imo> its like taking Diablo to the next level in gaming and experiencing it in a FPS fashion.
ofc it's not Diablo.
and it's not really multiplayer
but it has nice atmosphere (after you've read
the Hellgate: London - Exodus by Mel Odom)
and an almost forgotten feeling of hack'n'slash
but does it really worth to buy sub ??? dunno
I prefer Tabula Rasa sub - more 'active' game imho
