Hey everyone, I plan on getting a game for my friend for his birthday, and i'm guessing one of these two. I'll probably get a copy for myself after i get him one but i don't know which one to buy. I'm big on PVP so which one of these would be better for me?

i'm not 100% sure but i think TR has no PvP at all... maybe.
personally.. they're both ok-ish, neither impressed me in the slightest. all in all out of the two i'd have to say TR is a little better than Hellgate, but i'm officially buying neither.

If you want to play an MMOG, play Tabula Rasa. If you want to play an RPG like D2, play Hellgate. Even the developers of Hellgate say their game is no MMORPG.
On a side note and if you value your friendship with the person, don't buy a monthly bill as a gift unless of course they live with you. Take them out or buy them a gift card/certificate if it is long distance. Unless the person specifically asks for a subscription game, they may not take to kindly to you giving them one as a gift unless you are prepared to pay their subscriptions fees for the duration of them playing.

TR has PvP via a Clan vs Clan setup. Clans can wage war against one another, but there is no "open" PvP in TR. We are to busy fighting off the Bane and staying alive ourselves to be fighting one another.
I vote for TR, at least when buy Tabula Rasa, you get the full game . Granted it has a mandatory monthly fee after the first 30 days, but it well documented unlike HG.
From all I know (HG:L firsthand, Tabula Rasa from say so)...
HG: L - if you want fast paced twitch action... Altho RPG elements are all here, and done very well tbh, the gameplay is very much action oriented. I'd say it's an easy and very fun game to get into and get out of - it's casual gameplay all the way but it really draws you in to take that "just one more run..."
TR - If you want somewhat more "classical RPG" feel - i.e. clicking skills, a bit more world-persistence etc. From all the user reviews and impressions i get the feeling that it's like a bit speeded up WoW or GW in SciFi setting and with an active NPC alien menace included.

they both have some beginnings of it and they'll probably work on it in the future.
TR: dueling and guild warfare.
HG:L = Duelling and consensual free-for-all.
Personally I got this hunch HG:L has a better chance of evolving a true PvP scene - the game engine is very open-ended and it can take on all kinds of modifications to basic gameplay. It's been hinted by the devs that new PvP features will be coming soon - namely dedicated battlegrounds and a PvP ladder system.
Not to mention the already existing hardcore thing... You die - you loose your character. Permanently. Can you get more intense than that?
TR is and would be considered "Twitch" based as well, and its sure as hell fast-paced. There are skills and of course buttons associated with them that you do have to push now and then.... but overall you still have to aim, click, shoot just like any FPS.
I would say its much more than a step beyond WoW or GW, and very similar in respects to HG in terms of quick action gameplay.
Hmm if HG:L is really not MMORPG, the PVP would be like D2 lol? with like PVP rooms and such? For Tabula Rasa, clan vs clan fights would probably mean you can only PVP once you reach higher levels right?

I stand corrected then Tho I've read some player reviews that do make HG:L feel much more fast-paced than TR.. Maybe due to the number of monsters attacking you or number of skills you have to juggle at the same time (HG:L has much less viable skills on screen at any moment than what is the MMORPG norm... it is the timing of their use and positional tactics that take much of your "wetware-processing time" rather then picking through a list of skills - that's why I call it more "action" and less "RPG" than norm.)
I would say go for HGL. TR seems to odd for me. And you get the full game when purchasing HGL. Dont listen to the cheapo's out there that tell you different. And there full business model is well documented on their site so I dont understand were people get its not well documented. Basically your looking at it like this, you can buy tabula and play it for 30 days for free then have to subscribe for I think $15 a month. Or you can buy HGL play for 30 days and keep playing without a subscription. If you decide you want to be a guild leader or sell items on the AH or what not, then you can pay a fee per month. But in no way does paying make your character stronger or better in HGL.
To be honest though, if you want to buy your friend something for his birthday, then a game is a bad birthday present. I would suggest taking him out for dinner or going to see a great movie, as both of the games suggested are really lacking. Well unless of course he owns a XBox 360, then I would say get Halo 3. Its simply a great fps.
Well, HG:L PvP is still pretty much what Diablo had. TR has guild warfare but what it really means is that by declaring some guild your enemy it becomes a FFA PvP between guilds... wherever they meet. No dedicated PvP zones in both games yet I believe.
as for auto-aim in HG:L ... yes and no
HG:L combines both - If you play Hunter faction (a group of 2 classes) you play FPS where your Accuracy determines bullet spread. Other classes have different mechanics to determine classical RPG "chance to hit" (haven't really tried anything but hunter to be honest). More info when i spend some more time on my Blademaster

I have played both Tabula Rasa and Hellgate betas, both right before release. I played the Tabula Rasa beta first and longer, for about 2-3 weeks. Tabula was fun, lots of innovation. I am a PvPer at heart so that was my true test for both games. When trying the Tabula Rasa Clan vs Clan battles. I found it refreshing that if you were engaging CvC the PvP was open and you could have an all out battle in the many towns though it didn't make much sense of why you would be PvPing in the village. I never had a close PvP fight in Tabula due to certain weapons being OP and as a Sapper or Specialist, I lost every fight(against all higher lvls). The deaths were plentiful because it was open PvP I would start off in the same town I was killed in and my killer would be in the hospital waiting for me. Im sure with more balancing and clan members that would help out... the PvP could be really fun... I think.
Tabula Rasa: Some bugs, but a solid game with good mechanics. A lot better then some more popular games today. Sci-Fi theme MMO fighting aliens? What can go wrong, TRY IT!
And then Hellgate came... I was a fan of Diablo though I don't consider myself hardcore or a fanboi. I tried the demo first and it was just so-so to me. A day later I get the beta inventation in the mail without pre-ordering the game. LUCK! The beta was 10 times better then the demo though there were some bad crash bugs. I felt renewed playing the Hellgate beta. I felt like the game was something that we(or I) have needed for a long time. Non-stop, slug-fest action with insane graphics and online. Though not in a persistant world where you can see everybody at one time... This is still an AWESOME mmo. I've been trying mmos for 10 years and this one renewed my energy/years wasted on auto-attacking, zombieless grinding, and simple mechanical gameplay. So then I tried the PvP by doing some 1v1 battles with some new friends. I soon found out that this games mechanics were perfect for PvP. Great control over my character while shocking people with a lightning gun and casting Bone Spears at them with my other hand. Yes I mean at the same time too... Left click to shoot(hold down to maintain lightning beam) while timing and aiming my Bone Spears with First-Person Shooter accuracy.... Nuts imo. Can't wait for the PvP arenas...
Hellgate: Bugs as well but forming nicely. Some key features are missing but I expect those to come soon... EA wanted this game out by Halloween and they got it. Though missing these features make some people turn their head, don't bash it if you haven't tried it(and I'm not talking about that crappy demo). I declare this the winner. BUY IT!
P.S. - Both games are good, whatever theme fits you best then go for that one. Don't believe what most people on these forums say because most people just bash games when they have never tried the retail version.
I played D2 for many years and have just recently researched a little on hellgate, however i fail to see any real similarities between the two. Can someone please enlighten me?
Hellgate is not D3. There are a few similarities and jokes that reference to Diablo BUT this is a completely different game.
