The White House torture memos came out this week. Asscroft, Dumbsfeld and Shrub all knew about the torture and defended the right to torture prisoners.

WRONG! Chris Dodd praised Robert Byrd's career after renunciated the Klan and racism in the US Senate. Trent Lott wouldn't have been criticised at all if he had been praising Strom Thurmond's career in the Senate after he renunciated the politics of racism. Lott praised Thurmond for the positions he took WHILE THURMOND WAS A SEGREGATIONIST and said the country would have been better for electing a Segregationist.
LOTS of people, Republican and Democrats, have praised Thurmond's service to the country since he renunciated racism, especially shortly after Thurmond's recent death, just like lots of people praise Byrd's service to the country after Byrd renounced racism, as Sen. Dodd did.
Dodd is obviously NOT referring to Byrd's early political life when he still held racist views, because right here, Dodd mentions about Byrd, "I cannot think of a single moment in this nation's 220-plus year history where [Robert Byrd] would not have been a valuable asset to this country."
Robert Byrd is old, but not even Robert Byrd is 220 years old. Dodd is saying that the man Robert Byrd has evolved into as we know him now would be an asset at point in US history. What Byrd has become includes his renunciation of racism.
Lott was the only person who praised Thurmond career as a Segregationist, and paid the political price for doing so.

You can try and put words in people's mouth all you want, but no one is buying your spin. Let's see exactly what both Dodd and Lott had to say, and who they were saying it about.
Dodd on Byrd:
So, who is senator Byrd? He is an exKlan member, but not a regular member. He was a "kleagle" in the KKK. As a senator, Byrd filibustered the civil rights act for fourteen hours.
Lott on Thurmond:
So, who was senator Thurmond? He was a known segregationist, but never a klansman. He ran on the Dixiecrat ticket (a branch off of the democrat party) and captured four states in 1948. In 1954 he was the first and only write in candidate to win a seat in the Senate. As a democrat senator, he filibustered the civil rights act for twenty-four hours. He later switched to the republican party.
So, the question is, which was worse? Lott saying we might not have the problems we have today if Strom had been elected president as a segregationist, or Dodd saying Byrd would be a great senator at any time even when he spent much of that time he was a senator as a segregationist? I think both statements were stupid, but neither was meant to be an outright racist statement. They were both just heat of the moment statements meant to compliment the person being honored. The fact that one was blown out of proportion and not the other shows which side is petty and biased and using racism as a political tool.

A. No one likes a troll. If you can't handle posts without calling people dumb-ass or bullshit then you really have nothing to say whatsoever.
B. Resorting to name calling only makes you look bad and not the person you are trying to rebut. Matter of fact it only inches you clsoer to a ban as it is clearly stated in the forum rules that no trolling or language is to be used on these forums that attacks another's character.
C. Spouting out obscenities completely makes your argument not even worth looking at. When people debate thats fine. When it resorts to name calling that's another. It only tells me that you ran out of things to say and the only thing you can come up with now is calling people "dumbass" and "idiots" and so forth.

Robert Byrd WAS NOT ALIVE 220 years ago for his career to an asset to the nation 220 years ago. Robert Byrd is old, but not that old. Chris Dodd said the man he knows NOW would have been a asset to the country at any time in it's history.
Trent Lott said America would have been a better country if America have voteed for a segregationist for President.

I wouldn't have a problem with the forum not allowing political threads. However, if the forum is going to have political threads, it's not going to have one-sided, reactionary neo-conservative Republican spew anymore.
