Yes i use 1337 speak but the fact that im in school and take tough english classes balacnes it out. I know when i should use MMO talk and real world talk. I think that textings hurts the most though.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

Well I, as the starter of this thread feel that good grammar and English skills are mandatory. I don't expect you to type perfect English (or whatever language you may speak) but i expect full words. Here is an example of what to do and what not to do.

    NOT TO DO

"tank th Chic ten rn alot to gt G hog"

    WHAT TO DO

"Tank the chicken then run a lot to find the golden warthog"

And as you can see there is a very thick and bold line between the 2. But of course the occasion OMFG or WTF or FFS is OK when in a dangerous situation, not when we are in town trying to buy potions so i can kill Core Hounds.

P.S I am only 13, and i speak no leet and mastered the god sent tool known as SPELL CHECK!

P.P.S sorry if I wrote like a meanie

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pr0n surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of 'hot XXX galore'. While I clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, "'Tis not possible!", I muttered, "Give me back my free hardcore!"..... I have noticed this as well, and I don't think it's just games.  The internet in general (and emails and text messages, anything you write with a keyboard really) has a lot of shortcuts.  As much as it sometimes gets on my nerves, though, I have to wonder: is it really a horrible thing?  It's really hard to say - I think languages evolve naturally to be easier to master and more efficient; the whole idea of language is communication, and if "u" is easier than "you" well...why not?

Exactly what I meant in my earlier post.

In contrast, take <insert righteous English speaking person's name here>'s English, then transport him/her to lets say 15th century England, and see for how long would that person speak before being quartered for "foul mouth witch language".

Modern English is what it is today because somone, sometime ago, thought: "hmm, saying 'you'  is a tad shorter then saying 'thou' ".

Prepare for the inevitable, people. Soon we shall be speaking Binary. 0101110210110101

I guess I'm an anomaly, in that MMOs (a MUD called Gemstone III in particular) are responsible for my language skills being what they are.  Thanks to online gaming, and the many grammar and english nazis on forums associated therewith, I can type 100WPM and still use perfect grammar and punctuation.  I'm only 23, so I'm still pretty young compared to some of you.  I was barely getting into onlile gaming during my teen years, and it had a pretty significant impact on my intellectual and social development.

I do use shorthand occasionally, but it's not for lack of knowledge of how to communicate properly.  It's more of a time thing.  I'll throw out a BRB or AFK, I'll tell people to STFU and GTFO.  It all depends on how I'm trying to get my point across.  Sure there are those who don't know any better, but I'd say that the vast majority of people simply don't care enough to type in proper grammar or spell correctly.  That, and the text message generation is making "How r u" and the infamous  "IDK MY BFF JILL?" the "in" things at the moment.

Overall, I have the same opinion as most of you.  I've typed correctly (for the most part) since I was about 14 or 15, and I do get annoyed by people who don't.  Both people who CAN but choose not to, and people who legitimately can't, or don't know how, simply because it's really not that difficult.

In other words, I hate stupid people.  If you're stupid, you should GTFO.

First of all I have to tell you that i only read the first and last page with replies, this is because I really dont have time to read all the pages.

when i first saw this topic I totally disagreed with what the title said, this was because I sort of learned most of my english by playing (online)games. I am from the Netherlands, so enlish isnt my native language. we do get alot of english on school (im 18 now and they started teaching me english about 6 years ago) but since i read this topic i do see why you think that the internet and all the other new techniques are bad for our vocabulary. the most shocking thing about my own vocabulary was when i found out tha i misspelled my name, and didnt notice for about 2 years(rabbit with one b).

so i do think that some parts of what you guys are saying are true, but dont forget that enlish isnt everybody`s native language!

ok, one last note, i wrote all this with one hand because i broke a finger, and cant type with 2 hands anymore, so there could be some typefaulths in my post, but that is really because of my own laziness of not wanting to check my own replie... :P

"There actually is a path, you just have to be able to see it..."
"well if that is all," said the blind guy.

Welcome to the 21st century.   Languages change all the time and are constantly in a state of flux.  Look at the difference between Spanish spoken in Spain and Spanish spoken in Mexico.   If that is not a good enough example, look at the differences in Portuguese spoken in Portugal and the Portuguese spoken in Brazil.   English is no different.   English of the Internet is not the English spoken or used in every day life on the streets of America.   Is it a bad thing?   No...it's just how it is - different.
