It's the only server around and it's serving a population of roughly 500 million. Meanwhile there are three servers for the US population of about 300 million.
I wonder why the EU server is always showing red... FFS, give us some more servers in EU!
The general chat is pretty much a mess at the moment as everyone is speaking their own language and there's really no way to publicly chat otherwise.
I'd say about 60% of the general chat is english right now, with mostly german and east european languages to mix it up. The nice thing about euro-servers (at least in other games I've played, too soon to say about TR) is that almost everyone can speak some english. Maybe 80-90% has at least passable english skills, so you can get along with almost everybody.
But they definitely need to create some way to use separate language channels and declare the base general chat english only. Otherwise it's not very useful for anybody. And I'm not saying this just because I prefer english, the chat is so flooded with different languages that it's pretty much unintelligible right now.
Have a look at last weeks Feeback Friday where they cover the different server status levels and plans for specific language General chat on Centaurus.
Q. What does the server load status mean?
A. The load status can be a bit alarming when you want to join in the fun on the European server and it is a flashing orange or red. Fret not, we have 5 server load status and while they are representative of the player population currently logged on, they each represent a rather wide percentage of load. High could mean that the server is just over half full.
Q. Global chat is horrendous, there are so many languages spoken on the server!
A. Language chat channels are being tested and are coming soon. As the game is currently sold in English, French and German, the game will only recognise those 3 versions and automatically connect you to the relevant English, French or German chat channel. You will still be able to access other language channels but straight from the beginning you will be accessing a global chat channel to match the language you've installed the game in.

For me the server is too crowded when it affects my game performance. I don't need an external gauge to tell me that the server is bulging at the seams when the latency is close to 400 ms and my actions register with a delay. If they do have leeway in the server resources they aren't utilizing it very well.
Admittedly, I'd like to think that NC has pretty good net code as the situation is not half as bad as I'd expect from that latency. Nevertheless, we definitely need better performance at EU servers.
It's good that they are working on a solution for the chat problem. And I'm sure they are working on the performance issues too. It's just that I want to play the game now and it's not very enjoyable at the moment.
The number of servers is a bit of a downer, although I'm not put off by the multiple languages in the chat, you can always filter that off, and the signs displaying in multiple languages is a novelty, but I'm not sure why Korean is there (apologies to any Korean players). There are 5-6 zone instances always available though, and it gives you a choice. Lots of ppl means quicker opportunities for grouping, less ppl means less lag (or does it?), and more mobs. Does the population of a full or high capacity instance affect performance of the low instance, not that I've seen many low populated ones.

NCsoft has nothing to do with the code of the game. They are only the game's publisher, Destination Games handles all of the code.

True. My bad.
What comes to the various zone instances within the servers, I didn't think about those earlier. But if we have highly sharded main "servers", then how come we have such a crappy performance? The instancing really should alleviate the crowding problem if it's done properly (if the overall population stays within some limits of sanity).
The lowest wilderness instance I've seen has been medium full and that had a latency of 350 ms. So either the instances aren't actually handled by separate servers (which sort of defeats their purpose) or I have to revoke my statement about the net code. Or maybe the load status indicators don't mean much...
Of course, I really don't know much about the architecture, I only feel the results. But like I said earlier, I'm sure they are working on improving the performance by any means available. Clustered applications aren't exactly easy to build and run.
Roblob, I'm just curious here. Are you playing from Europe? I would think that the latency between Texas and Europe would be around 350ms at the best of times, or at least not too much lower?
I play from Australia and get a solid 400-600ms latency on just about any load (this is normal for the physical distance). Even during the end of beta event I was sitting around 700ms and it was definitely still playable.
EDIT:
This was also in that Feedback Friday, and may be of interest to you.
Q. Why don’t we have more servers? I’m lagging here!!
A. Can you be specific about your lag? It actually helps us more if you can tell us what you are experiencing, on what maps and at what times. You can do this by contacting our PlayNC Technical Support Team by typing /petition in game. Until we get server performance tweaked it would be a really bad idea to just 'turn on another server' to try and help performance. The fact of the matter is that just bringing up another server might not solve the problem. For example, some maps have performance issues no matter what the load is right now. We need to resolve the issues themselves, not the symptoms. We have developers monitoring, adjusting and resolving issues constantly. More resources are added to the current server hardware set up and this should ease part of the "lag" problem but this is just one facet of what could be causing the issue.
That's just it, my latency is currently something that I'd expect if I was playing over seas. Not when the server is practically next door.
I'm playing from Europe, but I'm on the EU server which is located in Germany (IIRC). The normal net latency should be well below 100ms from here to there. When playing WoW on the servers in France I rarely go above 150ms even in the thick of things.
Of course it's pretty useless comparing WoW and TR as one is just fresh from the oven while the other has been evolving for years. I'm sure things will only be getting better for TR.
The lag I'm experiencing is not a complete show stopper for me. It's merely annoying as I'd like to get a good feel for things before the 30 day period runs out. I'm fearing that I'll cancel the subscription simply out of annoyance even though I'm really hoping TR would be a good substitute for WoW for me.
WoW has simply lost it's appeal during the 2+ years I've played it. I'm definitely looking for something new and I only wish that if TR turns sour for me it's because I don't like the gameplay; not because they can't handle the tech.
Of course, one could argue that gameplay and technical execution is somewhat connected...
Slightly off-topic, but: are all the servers available regardless of which version (US/EU) of the game you are using? If I can play on both, that's a huge plus in my book and it will make me more inclined to try it out.
The problem they have is that they are routing the service through open transit aka french telecom now owned by wanadoo to germany.
Any experienced gany other game fed through france been amer having played dark age of camelot and lets just say you know when you've been tango'd. Why do you think GOA are moving their warhammer operation to Ireland? Having been previously based in France?
Fortunately the server is based in germany so ncsoft can route it there better if they chose and it would solve many problems.
God damn some parent company needs to give me a job asap, I'll sort them all out.

Yes, you can play on any and all servers regardless of the version you buy.
