Wild West MMORPG?

I would love to see an mmorpg set in the old west.  I had so much fun playing games like "Gun" and "Red Dead Revolver."

Small towns, sheriffs, bandits, trains, indians, gallows, saloons, duels, horse combat, canyons, deserts....

What say you?

Bring on Diablo 3!

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out shouting "Holy Shit...WHAT A RIDE!!"

    That would be awesome.

Too bad every single game features leveling up an elf/orc with magic fireballs.

I had the same idea and actually wrote up a game design plan for just such a game.

Essentially it would be a mix of pvp and pve.  Two  factions to start, american indian and settlers.  Both factions would be comprised of smaller groups, for example american indian might have cherokee, siox and apache, and the settlers could be comprised of various mix of settlers...german, french and english maybe.  Having the varous subgroups would allow for aesthetic choices and maybe bonuses to particular abilities or traits.

Indian classes might consist of warrior, scout, medicine man, and a support class (crafter), Settlers might consist of calvery, doctor, priest, merchant/bar keep.

Instead of levels I was thinking of a skill based system.  For example, using you're pistol in duels a lot you improve your accuracy and speed with said weapon.  As you gain more kills you win titles, similar to LOTRO's deed system.  So perhaps gunfighter might be one title, dead eye might be another, troublemaker still another.  Lots of fun titles possible.

Pvp would consist of indian vs. settler in instanced battlegrounds which would win important resource bonuses for crafters, as well as raids by other faction into indian villages and settler towns, and then faction vs. faction open pvp in contested zones.

One of my ideas which I havent seen anywhere else is a special bar perhaps below health and power that would be a faction bar, determined by how well your faction is doing in the war.  This faction bar would reset every night at midnight and could be used to do any number of things, from termorary power up, crafting bonuses, to a back from the dead ability that would allow you to rez one time in combat.

Ofcourse there would be mounts.  What would the old west be without horses.  And pets.

Anyway, these are just some of my ideas.

Actually I just had an idea to add.  Maybe add a pet class to both factions.  Pet class would basically be like the old creature handler class in swg, where you go into the wild and tame creatures.

Pets would have classes though...so like a horse would just be a mount, not able to fight.  Some pet's ike hawk or dog might be hunter assist type pets. I don't think I would make pets a combat for pvp class though.  Still, the pet master might be able to learn certain cool abilities from his pets....like eagle sight, or strength of the bear, or Mountain lion claw rake.  And then there is just the coolness factor of owning and or selling companion pets that do nothing other than look cool: cat's, snakes, lizards, scorpions, chickens, etc.

Could be interesting.  I think you'd need to go FFA PvP or at least have some FFA PvP zones.  Guild vs Guild would probably work better than factions.  Skill based would make more sense than level/class.  IMHO, you'd have to have some type of FPS element in the game play.  The usual "auto play" MMO combat would be pretty lame in a shoot out.
