WHAT IS THE TOP SELLING GAME OF ALL TIME?

XaldorXaldor Member Posts: 236
I've done numerous searches on the net for this info, but I have yet to find the answer.  Is there a "BILLBOARD" chart for video games?  If so what is the link.  I just want to know what the top selling game of all time is...any platform (handheld, console, or PC)....My first guess is TETRIS, but what the hell do I know...Xaldorimage

I'd have to say it's one of the newer games...or if it's a classic, it's for the gameboy.  Gameboy is the best selling console of all time, so it'd probably be a recurring gameboy title.

Personally, newer games have sold better because there's more interest in the industry now...though if you group all of the tetris incarnations together, you'd probably have a solid bet to place.

AHH! Run away from the monster! He's going to eat us!

    i dont know....

maybe its pacman and the different varieties of it?  I say this simply because PacMan has been around since 1980 and I still see them in arcade buildings

OK...how about a billboard for video game sales...Someone should do this.  You could have sections for PC, Console, and handheld games...Also for game genre's like RPG's, MMORPG's, Sports, Adventure...etc...etc...etc...Xaldorimage

According to PC Data figures cited by Mindscape, Myst  held the title for top-selling computer game of all time, having sold over 5.5 million copies worldwide since its initial release in 1994 to 1999. However this took a dramatic slam when Sims Online hit the market in 2000. Making record sales through 2000, 2001 and 2002, Electronic Arts announcing they have shipped over 6.3 million copies worldwide, making it the best selling PC game of all time. Translated into 13 different languages, The Sims also remains a top seller worldwide.
December 21-27 and December 28-January 3 2004 saw the Sims continue to dominate the charts over the holidays, but Call of Duty took the top slot in the end. Sims titles accounted for half of the top 10 PC games sold Christmas Week, which included the Sims Deluxe and Double Deluxe, as well as the Superstar, Vacation, and Making Magic expansion packs.
The Sims also took the lion's share of PC sales the first week of 2004, with one major exception. For the first time since November, The Sims: Makin' Magic was knocked out of the top slot. The usurper? Activision's critically lauded and enduringly popular WWII shooter Call of Duty, which, it seems, has finally gotten its due.
In this month's headlines, as Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban dominates theatres across the U.S., so does the game. Available for PC, Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban had even stormed the sales charts in the gaming community. Provided by
The NPD Group, here are the full details from the PC sales charts from the week of June 5, 2004.

PC Sales Charts: Week of June 5, 2004

1 Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkaban - Electronic Arts $30
    2 Halo: Combat Evolved - Microsoft $30
    3 Rise Of Nations - Microsoft $33
    4 City Of Heroes - NCsoft $46
    5 Battlefield Vietnam - Electronic Arts $38
    6 Far Cry - Ubisoft $38
7 MS Age Of Mythology - Microsoft $32
8 MS Zoo Tycoon: Complete Collection - Microsoft $28
9 Rise Of Nations: Thrones & Patriots Expansion Pack - Microsoft $26
    10 Unreal Tournament 2004 - Atari $40

Fear not however, at E3, the public learned the release date for The Sims 2. The sequel to still "the best-selling PC series of all time" hitting PCs on September 17, according to an anonymous source close to the game's development.

Ok on the PC side of things, the top selling PC game is the SIMS and the  top selling series is also the SIMS..

Now on the console side, top selling game is super mario brothers,  released back in 1982 i think sold an estimate 42 million copies to date and of course the best selling series goes to the Mario series as well with 19 titles in his bag that has sold a total of 174 million copies....

Worth mentioning is Starcraft, with over 6 mill. copies sold and still the top3 most popular game. This is due to the huge popularity it has in Korea. I think the reason Starcraft is not taken into account, in those figures, is that Starcraft is not very popular in the US. Hence there is not much info and statistics in english, regarding Starcraft.

I found an old, but interesting article:

I got this from another forum, but it's the best I've gotten so far:

To this day Super Mario Bros. 3 remains the best-selling video game of all time never bundled with console hardware, having sold 17.28 million copies.

I'm not sure about games bundled with console hardware, but there ya go.

    Can you say multi-millionaire mario.image

I would assume Halo would be the top game for the Xbox?

Since I don't own a PS1 or PS2, I wonder what their top games is?

For PS2 it's a little game called GTA: Vice City. Not sure about PS1, my best guess would be final fantasy something, probably 7.
