Question from a possible member

I'm sure those of you who actively post here get a lot of these.

 

I'm a little skeptic about FFXI, I've yet to try it and I've had mixed reactions from people.  I've heard "It's great," "Amazing," and "Fun."  At the same time I've heard "Boring," "Waste of time," and "Wouldn't recommend it."  I'm not asking for an opinion, but more or less if you think I would like it.  Personally, I love almost every Final Fantasy game pumped out, and I could reminisce all day with you about them.  My two favorites are 3 and 5, as well as the Tactics series.  I think I love these because of the ability to mold your own characters and play strategies, which I think might be important in FFXI.  What I'm worried about is that I won't be able to see past the in-depth character system and only be able to see the large grind ahead. What counter-acts this thought is the fact that I've beaten Tactics at least 5 times, advance twice(once completing everything and such), and I've just recently beaten advance 2.  Based on that, what do you, the FFXI MMORPG.com community, think that I would think of this game?

I've only played FFXI and FFXII so I'm afraid I can't really help on evaluting your tastes.  It sounds like you enjoy strategy games and while I'd argue that FFXI definitely is one of the harder MMO's out there and some strategy is involved, I also wouldn't call it a strategy game.  Keep in mind you don't choose what stats to level, you can only do that after you reach the cap on one job and start merit-leveling on what you want to raise.

But here's what I believe to be a good way of deciding if FFXI is right for you--

People Who'd Enjoy FFXI:

- PVE players

- People who enjoy grouping

- People with a fair amount of time (at least 3 hours) HOWEVER keep in mind this is just recommended and not necessary.  You can always decide on how long you spend on a game.

- People who want engaging storylines (see: missions, quests) 

- Raiders

People Who WOULDN'T Enjoy FFXI:

- PVPers.  PVP is there but not in full force and right now is more of a group vs. group thing anyway.

- People who want to level by questing.

- Solo'ers.  You can solo (Beastmaster job) and it is possible to on other jobs, just don't expect it to be easy or an efficient way to level.

- Anyone expecting next-gen graphics.  This is a 5 year old game limited by the PS2 so keep that in mind.  I consider myself to be a graphics whore and I think it holds up well.

Thanks for your input, Vanillatea.

 

I'm not really into a lot of strategy games, especially not very many RTS.  It's the ability to swap around my character's jobs to change different needs and playstyles, that's what keeps me into those games.

 

I'll definitely look into getting it, and I'll pick up the trial disc next time I remember to

I was going to post here....but this poster hit it right on the head. The only thing I can do is add my personal experience with the game. FFXI was my first MMO and with every new one I play, I miss this one more.  Its worth at least a try.
