ok im thinking of returning, i see the threads about people asking about server pops and stuff and everyone tells them to play on classic servers, thats cool considering i only have the origional game and si... but i need to know if it is gunna be like eq1... am i going to have to basically solo my way to end game before i can get grpage? is there still a decent enough population of lower lvl characters for someone to start fresh and play with all the way thru the game?
it makes me very happy to see people encouraging people to return to the game, this is something that eq cannot boast, the people who still play daoc seem to play because they want to...not because they are afraid of losing 7years

So first things first, classic servers are not "classic." It is a horrible name that should have never been used. It simply is missing the ToA expansion, there are limits on buff distance, and there are no free level 20 characters.
In order to play the game you will need to update to Catacombs - the original game, SI, and ToA are no longer supported. The good news is that everything through Catacombs is free. You will want Catacombs because it makes the game look better and because it makes leveling a lot quicker.
As for the low level population - it is there. Leveling is so fast now combined with no free level 20 characters so people have to start over at level 1. But, to what extent are these people grouping up and how many will be around your level, all depends on which realm you pick and the time you play. This will also affect how you level, whether it be quests, grinding instances, or adventuring out in the world.
People start doing the BG RvR around level 20 so finding people to group with out there should be easy.
So you will see people around your level playing most times of the day. You will have the greatest chance of running into a new player on the classic servers. You will have oportunities to group. I can't guarantee that, but this is the main reason people are told to go classic is because there is a larger player base at the low end of the game which gives you a greater chance to group.
<points to above info> Everything up there is exactly correct.
I think many peopel like to play classic servers sine they do address some of the major issues of the game. If you are thinking about the game, go ahead and use the free trial account. Then, to get a sense for whats out there you can log onto Pendragon and instant level up to 50 on the test server and then go around the frontiers/zones and take in the sights.
HOwever, DAOC is still a great game, and one of the best PvP games around
Good Luck
