...the naming convention.
The account is stuck with the same surname (by default at least), and ingame players are referred to by the surname. I have two characters both with the same surname, which is fine; but if this is maintained how do keep track of other players. I don't seem to be able to add names to my friends list who are not online.
Ok, now tell me the surname can be changed at creation (not cloning, as it is stated in the manual that a clone will have the same surname).

Surname is more or less your player name. First name is your character name. You should, though I may be wrong, be able to add someone to your friends list by adding their surname. This will then in turn allow you to contact them no matter which of their characters that they are on.
Surname is dictated by the creation of the first character on the given server.
That's what I gathered.
I love the system, you can hold people accountable for their actions by knowing they will not popup in your face as an unkown alt.
Also you can't be in multiple clans.
Good stuff tbh.
I love that you cannot change your surname in game. No more ripping people off(Yea I can enchant your equipment, just give me materials worth 10.000 gold") No more jackasses beeing level 1 just spammin chat. No more Alt whores running around f**** things up. Love it!
Although not being able to re-use a first name after a character has been deleted is a pain.
Surely we are going to run out of names!!

Nah, not as long as people are creative making names. For example "WTFBBQ" or "IpWnzJ00". How about "IrTeHpWnZ00r".
For CoX, the devs made it so any name on an under lvl 6 (I think) charactor that hadn't been played in 3 or 6 months was taken away and available again. That was NCsoft to.
I read somewhere the name of a deleted toon will be available after 30 min. Haven't tried myself.
Last friday's newsletter said they recognize that not being able to join 2 clans might be annoying and they will look into it. You wont be able to be in 2 PVP different clans at the same time though.
A few of the things mentioned here regarding character names are known issues listed in the current public test notes. Hopefully, they will be looked into soon.
Hmm, naff it seems not, more or less. Does this really mean an end to plat sellers? Then when it comes to it, I don't think it'll bother me that much.
This might just be quite an innovation. But, if the dev's decide to introduce Forean's as a playable race one day, it might seem odd, or out of place being related to one. No disrespect to our Forean friends of course.
The name system won't stop, or even deter, the real-money transfer companies. In other games, their accounts are banned as well. They'll be banned here. Even if it somehow makes it necessary for the gold sellers to purchase a larger number of accounts, they'll just pass that overhead to the consumer by charging more for the currency. Gold farmers and sellers will be present in every online game with a currency system from now until the end of time. The only way to prevent it is to make currency absolutely worthless, in which case, there's not really any point in putting the stuff in the game.
As for the Foreans, I agree. I'm not sure what they'll do about that. Somehow, having a Forean character with the last name "Kuriyama" seems a little odd to me. Though, seeing characters running around named "Guts Nblood" and "Poopy Panzer" sort of makes realism a moot point.
For a privacy standpoint, I feel the system should ask the recipient if they can be added to someone else's /friends list -- just like CoX does with global chat handles.
