I'm pritty much on the same boat there, i've gotten to level 60 about 5 or so months ago and now im trying to find a new MMORPG, i fail to find one yet but in my oppinion Warhammer online looks good
Why not try the trial?
imho eq2 is funner than wow. I would suggest going on a popular server, the bazaar was the one i was on, very populated, Get into a nice populated guild, , look for a lady named ammorette or hagrin and tell em haggly sent ya for some good old eq2 fun.
playing eq2 and two worlds
Try the trial EQ2. Saying that, sorry you are stuck @ 44. Really, there are a lot of great dungeons for you @ 60+. Blizzard did a really nice job with the loot even if they did botch it making level 60 raid gear pretty useless at launch of TBC. They knew it in beta, but with all things beta for all companies, once it goes to beta it is far, far to late to do anything about and not much changed for a while. Also, it doesn't matter if you PvP or PvE, there is plenty of phat loot @ 70.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
They just made leveling faster in the 2.3 patch for Wow.. don't think you should have a problem leveling.
That being said EQII is more difficult and time consuming to level than in WoW, keep that in mind.
Do you prefer to solo or group? And what class do you play? That might help on helping with a new game, or just some inspiration for levelling.
The better question is, what is it about WoW that you dont like. If you can answer that, then it will be easy to say if you will or will not like EQ2. You may also want to think about LOTRO,
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
The biggest fault for EQ2 has to be how they painted themselves into a corner with character armor models in that they can't develop new ones. What moron decided it was a good thing to create a character model system that was anti-new armor designs?
So in EQ2 everyone wears the same armor model ( depending on what they can equip ) for plate, cloth, leather and chain. The only difference is that all armor has a different skin. Oh and the Pally class helm in EQ2 is horrible. It looks like a KFC bucket with wings that was painted yellow.
If you can get past the idea that you'll be wearing the same armor model but just with a different skin for the next 80 levels you'll be okay.
Everquest 2 at least has more ways of developing a character. There are many things in the game that are available, such as locking your levels to stay around the same level range as your friends and advancing in alternate advancement/alternate experience. This helps you gain higher level skills, as instead of just purchasing the skills as you level, you gain this alternate experience and level the skills that way (sort of like grinding the skills up I guess you could say). Also, crafting is not pointless, as you can acquire many great items throughout your character's lifetime due to crafted items.
The game itself is much more hardcore than WoW when it comes to twinking, so keep that in mind. The combat system is sort of like... DAoC with WoW's free movement, so that should say something if you are familiar with PvP in those games. Also, the targeting system is much better in that assisting is much easier. Also, tanks can actually utilize their taunt ability in PvP which is something people have been asking about for years, but finally you can pull aggro/swap a person's target with Taunt, so there is much micro involved in the PvP. Also, each class brings something to the group in terms of buffs or utility, not just - Hi I kill stuff and nothing else, or I'm just a healer... Everyone helps out.
The game is much more in depth and you will probably actually have fun running around the world and finding things in a much more beautiful world, but if that's not your thing then don't worry about that. Also in PvP, if that's your thing, you can gain items from your opponent's inventory, so you have slight penalties and rewards for PvPing as opposed to getting nothing but a little ladder rating that tells people how many times you've lost in a controlled environment.
If I was paying to play a game right now and I had a lot of time to sink into one, I'd be playing EQ2 because overall it is better than the rest of the games out there. I don't know about other people, but after seeing a dungeon once I could care less about seeing it again because most of them are boring, bleak, have lame background stories like - OH A GOD LIVES HERE AND THAT'S WHY YOU'RE KILLING THIS ENTIRE SET OF BOSSES and washed out colors on the wall (WoW in my opinion falls under this category), but EQ2 does a nice job w/ its graphics engine to provide bloom where it needs to be and keep things nice and purdy. Also, I like to PK people, so this game at least provides me with some reward for slaughtering people who are not aware of their surroundings or attempt to jump me.
I'd say WoW is better hands down.
EverQuest II seems like the most linear MMORPG I've ever played - as in I feel like I'm supposed to follow the same old quests and wear the same old armor as every single person playing the same class as me. I always felt like I was playing a single-player game in the presence of many other people doing the same. Not to mention, the PvP is absolutely SHOT. If you don't believe me go read the EQ2 forums and listen to them talk about PvP, it's miserable.
While I'm no WoW fanboy by any means, I think it's a far better game than EverQuest 2. The only reason I would like EverQuest 2 more is because of the graphics, but then again the armor models are like 1 in 5 and are thoroughly recycled. It's boring on the eyes.
