I've at least tried most of the PvE titles that have been released, though I've skipped the PvP games like Shadowbane and Planetside and the free Asian MMOs.
I'm not lacking in experience, or in adapting to new experiences, but something about this game just isn't clicking for me. In one of my earlier posts in this thread I said something to the effect of having to "change myself into a new person" to be good at this, because I've tried using the skills I possess, and I'm just not getting much in the way of positive results. I made it to level 20, but it's been a pretty bumpy ride. I've pretty much made my peace with the fact that this isn't the game for me, but I've enjoyed it enough to stick around for a bit and pass on tips and information until my subscription runs out. I'm definitely not on the board to rant and whine, but I saw this thread and really responded to it.

What profession are you playing? I am wondering if it is no so much you but more the profession you chose. Have you tried to start from the beginning with a different profession? Maybe you would find it easier? Just  a suggestion.

If you are playing a ranger, rage and shrapel skill is your friend. Those should be on your hotkeys and used alot...not to meantion carpet bomb. This game is hardly twitchy...if you want to see a real twitchy game then try Unreal Tournament or Quake series.
I think it has more to do with not knowing how to play the game and use the skills and hotkeys more than it being twitchy. Stop acting like your 60 years old and about 5seconds away from a coffin and learn how to play the game. Its an insult to me at 33, that you guys act like you're so old you cant handle a MMORPG.

CS is king of twitch. Speed freaks and energy drink addicts play that game.

I have a level 18 Commando, but I mostly play my level 20 Ranger. I typically play tanks in MMOs, but I didn't notice a huge amount of difference between Commandos and Rangers at this point, and neither seemed particularly "tanky." Commandos have a bit more armor, but both branches tend to use the Firearms skill, and the game mechanics are the same for both. There are differences with the secondary skills, to be sure, but I only have a couple of pumps in Grenade Launchers for my Commando, and my Ranger has most of her points invested in Firearms, Rage, and Stealth Armor. I may have been better off investing in some carpet bombing and such, but I wanted to get Stealth Armor to 5 before I reached my next cloning point (it's currently at 4).

In any case, the specialist tree doesn't really appeal to me very much. I may be female, but I've never really liked the support role. I prefer tanking when possible. It's basically a more offensive form of healing; instead of repairing everyone, though, you intercept the damage before it hits them. Unfortunately, most of the reading I've done seems to indicate that Guardians can't take much more damage than anyone else at this point, at least not enough to be dedicated tanks. As a result, I've been leaning more towards Sniper and Spy. I'm 10 levels away from either, though, and not really logging in much anymore. I've mostly been back in City of Heroes doing the tank thing there.

Again, I really think you need to re-evaluate how you view combat in this game. If you're like me, all that previous MMO experience hammered into your brain the "pull/tank/heal/range" method, and that simply doesn't apply here. With everyone using guns (well except Guardians maybe) there really isn't a tank class, per se. You're just not going to have 1 guy soaking up all the damage while the healer presses the heal button and the range damage dealers press theirs. Combat is much more dynamic and fluid and you need to keep that in mind. In other MMO's the variation comes from encounter-to-encounter, or maybe mob-to-mob (ie. "Ok, this is XYZ mob, I need to use XYZ pattern of skills to defeat it"). In TR, variation happens from moment-to-moment, and that's the challenge that a lot of old-school MMO'ers are having to deal with.

Part of it is how combat works, but give some kudos to the AI coders, too. This MMO has the best mob AI I've ever seen in an MMO, hands down. There's very little predictability to it, and that's another thing that gives us old schoolers fits. We can't just count on the mob running up and whacking on 1 person until it dies anymore. These guys will attack, retreat, duck for cover, wait for reinforcements, you know, like real living things would. It makes it a lot tougher when the mobs' behavior isn't so predictable. Some people want predictability, they want to be able to find the "optimal" pattern for each encounter so they can stick with it, and maybe this isn't the game for them.

I've been playing MMO's for so long that they were all starting to seem like the exact same tired mechanics behind all the different facades. At least for me, I find the combat a breath of fresh air. It's new to me and I'm still learning the ropes, but I'm really loving the process. :)

    Thanks all for the encouragement.

But Jenuviel sounds like what I could become if I pratice for 3 or 4 years non-stop.  Hehehe, I am chain dying at level 10 with my soldier, and at level 5 with my specialist...so it is the road of the soldier for me I guess.  But...I don't see myself practicing for years never really achieving anything significant.  I play for FUN after all.

I will never be competitive in this game...and this is way too hard for my ego for me to keep playing.

Some peoples even compared it to CoV and see no difference.  Sir, you are a master and prolly deserve a 95%+ rating for reflexes.  So the difference between 40% and 60% might be unoticeable for you, but trust me, for me it is night and day.  I often take 3+ hits before I counter.

I never was able to swim, despite trying HARD.  Practice and efforts can only take you that far.  Accepting who you are and what you are capable off is something.  I can walk just fine, I can run just fine.  But most artists recognize my footstep itself...and I am quite the average guy!  Hehehe.

PS: I already have years of training in moving in a 3D environment, so you can't links my troubles with the new environment, it is linked to the reflexes...which are slightly subpar.

This is a great thread and it's a topic that certainly needs to be discussed.   I, as an "older" gamer, know just what Anofalye and Jen are talking about.  One of the good things about playing MMO's and FPS, is that they help keep your reflexes up the same way doing crossword puzzles keeps your brain agile as you age.  So even if you feel TR is too fast for you, on average, your reflexes are probably better than most people our age.   I'm around the same age as Jen and don't have any issues with keeping up with the gameplay but  I think its partly due to me playing a support type class.  I plan on leveling a Commando soon so I will see how that goes.  I do solo most of my missions however and I do OK.  Here are my suggestions (and I am sure they may have been mentioned, but here goes):

TAB, TAB, TAB.  it's your friend and in TR its your BEST friend.  COVER, retreat and crouch. Range fight when you can.  And Last, Key bindings: Make them as comfortable as they need to be.  Switch them around and try other layouts.  FInd whats comfortable for you.

Also, I simply dont try and fight everything.  I run past, hide, sneak and high-tail it when I need to.  If I am running around getting Logos or waypoints, I just book it, and ignore the mobs till I get to my destination and accomplish what I need.   When I do my CP fights I simply go on the top levels and snipe down at mobs one at a time.  Samething on the battlefields, I hole up in a trencha nd snipe at mobs with my injector gun.

The great thing about TR is that there are simply so many ways to play, so many different tactics one can employ.  Try out different classes and see what works better.  Good luck!   BTW average lifespan is increasing up to the 90's, so we have alot of years before us.  We gotta keep those reflexes sharp!

hm well i am also the avarage Joe player,

and also got a nice list of deaths for my toon(most from cp linkers ^^)

i dont have but one purple item, all of the vendors shelf and no attribute point is allocated yet.

and im doing quiet well at lvl 18 in divide

But i cannot believe  lack of reflexes kills you

    so offen,

maybe you try on to *hard* mobs by soloing instances at your lvl?.. the times i die is when i get overwhelmed and dont recon my armor dropping..

no reflexes will save me from the inc damage only

outgunning em will save me and the easiest way

to reduce em and keep your inc. damage low is to knock em down shortrange by shotguning ^^

after you sniped at them from afar

the shotgun from the vendor will do fine..

i would love to game with some of you low reflex

people cause seems youre well informed about the tactics

The one thing I have seen no one mention so far is the importance of:

    LEARNING WHEN TO RUN!

For sure you will die a lot and often if you try to "stand and deliver" in all situations!

Sorry for the caps, but I wanted to point out how important it is.... I die a lot, but it is usually when I either run stupidly in the wrong direction... or fail to retreat soon enough.

    And oh...... I'm 46. lol

And there's a lot to be said for situational awareness too, but I'll leave it go for now.
