While We Wait for WAR: Free MMOs

With WAR being pushed back and many of us just sitting around waiting I have been searching for a way to get my MMO fix without paying a subscription for a game I probably won't play more than a month! For those of you who are insanely addicted to MMORPGs like me check out this website:

Free-MMOs.com

It has over 100+ free MMORPGs and they are all actually legitimate MMOs none of those text based games or economic browser games. There is also a pretty decent list of free MMO trials. Anyways check out there lists and get that MMO fix you are dying for while we wait for Q2 2008!

Mu Online and RF online are okay F2P mmos. Certainly not the best, but for being free, they do they job respectably well, and pretty decent populations.

Archlord... that game is just terrible. I just couldn't find anything good about it at all, and I'm usually pretty easy going on F2P, but it's right there with Horizons... Just shouldn't really exist.

I had the same opinion on Archlord. I didnt stay more than 2 days with that..I gave it a second day cause I thought "Bah, its probably all just bad luck"...nope

I've actually been enjoying Sword of the New World. Free or not, the games pretty fun.

    Bollocks!

I don't think I have ever played a F2P mmo that I truly enjoyed thoroughly. So that is why I have a 360.

i have been waiting for WAR for what seems like forever, and have been to various MMOs to try and quell my hunger pains :) . i have been back to wow, gone to eve and then tried a ton of free mmos and probably the best of them is RFonline just because of the mech's :) but now ive gone back to P2P for now with EQ2 and i think it will do till WAR comes out cause it is really enjoyable at the moment :) . launch of WAR cant come quick enough for me lol, ho hum mass effect soon :D

I'm with you on that point.  I stick to console until an MMO worth the time and money comes along.  Hopefully WAR or AoC will be the one.

Their game of the week right now is Rising Force Online, it took me a about an hour to get used to the control but after that I really enjoyed the game. These aren't the kind of games I'm prone to playing for years but they entertain me for at least a week or more if you find a good one and give it some time to develop as you level. Flyff is also the same way, I really liked that one.

Trust me guys, play anything else but free mmo's. Play single player, multiplayer games, browser arcades. Free mmos are crap.

Yeah have to disagree with you there. RF online is a horrendous grindfest where you kill the same monsters over (but different colored ones at higher levels) and hope that somehow you won't go insane from the sheer monotony of it before you get to the end game content of PvP which I've heard requires huge influxes of cash and faces severe balancing issues. Steer clear of RF online.

I think it's also a good idea to play non MMO's and actually move away from the PC while waiting for WAR. Got an xbox 360, PS3, Wii? Play it!

Tons of good games out there right now for those systems waiting for you to take that break from "MMO'ing". And when WAR comes, you will be fresh and ready to hit the ground running.

So in the meantime you can sign up for something like Gamefly - www.gamefly.com , or GottaPlay - http://www.gottaplay.com . For about 12 bucks a month you can rent games from them, play them, and return em and get another one!

Try setting down the electronic interface and opening a few books. I have been reading a few Warhammer novels to brush up on background and keep those MMO hunger pains lessened.

I'd agree about the F2P MMO's; especially the Korean ones. They are absolutely freak-grind fests. All of them. Sword of the New World and RFOnline and others fall into that category. They used to be $50 at your local electronics store (Best Buy, etc.). Stay away. They either lure you in and require buying gear later on (with real money) or they sell in-game money through third party companies and bots like a mo-fo.

I am working on other hobbies I always maintain (cars and target shooting) and reading, etc. I also am playing COD4 which has a bit of RPG nature to it, but would be better without cheats and hackers that sometimes plague a gameset.

Ive been in around 800 games since I've started, and havent noticed any blatant cheating or hacking. What have you seen?

1st off: Every F2b/p game I've tried is a grind fest. If you're not into grinding until you hit lvl 30 or so, f2b/p isn't for you. I've played 9dragons, Tales of Pirates, Age of Armor, Archlord, Zu-Online, 12sky, and a few others. They're all crap except for 1 title: Rappelz

Rappelz is the only f2b/p mmo I'd ever recommend.

2nd off: Yes these games are f2b/p, but they aren't really f2p if you're planning on investing time into the game. You're eventually going to have to pay real money for the best armor, weapons and items especially if you plan to pvp.

If you talk to some vets in some of the games I've listed above, you'll find that some have spent over $100 on their main toon. It makes CoH and Lotro seem kind of cheap, and is why I'm that much more impressed with GW.

If you're looking for a quick fix game for a month or so, I don't recommend any of the f2b/p titles because most of your time will be grinding. You're better off as said before, playing a console until you're able to play WAR.
