can anyone answer how long characters are retained for on cancelled accounts.
I fancy coming back but cant be arsed to do it from square 1

I think they are generous on that. Their policy, so far as I know, is 6 months. I've however been gone nearly a year and returned with everything in tact.
I dont realy understand that policy,cause ive never seen or heard of it being enforced.Heck ive being away for 1 year and a half and my char and account was still there.
Don't worry, your account should still be there... I've yet to meet anyone who claimed to have lost one (that wasn't officially banned or something)

I don't think they've cleared old characters yet.
The 6 month policy is really a data corruption blanket. Unless something goes wrong they won't delete a characters information. IF something does goes wrong they may decide not to bother reconstructing character data for accounts that have been inactive for 6 months. If they do that they do that they have something that they can point to that and say well we said we don't keep data past 6 months.
Since CCP has not had any problems yet with the character database then your stuff should be there waiting for you.
