I’ve recently read about how Lord Kazzak was kited into Stormwind on some servers on WoW. This was an unexpected extreme event that needed server resets. Another incident I’ve read about was when Lord British was killed in Ultima online beta.
I’d be interested in what other famous unexpected extreme events/ incidents have occurred in MMOGs?

Ah thinking about it I suppose the most famous one of all was the corrupted blood incident in WoW two years ago. That was a bad one!!!

I believe the corrupted blood incident still stands as one of the best 'Events' in recent memory. It was just classic, with real in game hysteria.
"World of SmallPox"

Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
In EVE a certain corp , learned how to lock down the police forces and then proceded to kill everything that moved in one of the most populated sectors of space. The innovative use of fleets prompted CCP to completely change how the police respond to attacks and the actual stats of police ships.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
That's a good one Gorair. I've played Eve but I hadn't heard of that incident. Locking down the police indeed...

So after a while the GM's heard about this and as it happened a Dev came over to have a look [to see how they were doint it for a future fix] and ask them politly to stop. The dev was basically told to F*** off so he not only banned them he also delited there corp and all there assets so that to all intense and puposes they were errased completly. They lost over 100 accounts that day but we gained a good story.
However i still rate the corrupted blood bug as a even better one.

Sounds interesting Mr Bubbles. I remember Richard Garriot saying in the book Dungeon and Dreamers it's hard to know what's fair when some people outfox the game system without resorting to cheating. Are they really doing wrong? The argument is usually that they'#re spoiling the enjoyment of others. But the gankers in WoW do that a plenty.
I guess corrupted blood is pretty unique and it will be a while before we some something of that magnitude in a game again.

In one of the live events for Asheron's Call 1, Bael'Zharon (the main bad guy) actually killed Asheron in a live GM-operated battle on one of the servers.
Events like this are the single most interesting things about MMOs
(im not even kidding, nothing beats creativity)
I was on one of the servers kazzak got kited to Stormwind on, and its still one of the greatest things that ever happened in an MMO
Its not really a server reset worthy event but I remember when WoW hunter pets could be the Geddon bomb and be dismissed before they blew up and saved for when the AH got crowded ^.^
Asherons Call 1 - Bael Zharon showed up at Fort Teth, and proceeded to kill everyone in sight. It was really exciting knowing there was a live GM controlling him, not just some pre-scripted event triggered at random. I wish more MMOs would feature live events like that.

I've remembered the newbie spider rampage bug in Vanguard. These newbie pets spawned at level 17 and attacked all players within range in the newbie area.
