Actually I dont think ragnarok is free. And the main thing is if they make the servers where they're suppose to support that much.

EVE has had over 10k users playing at the same time. they don´t use shards, instead it is one big universe. Which is cool as you can find freinds from all over the planet and makes the interaction between players more dynamic.
When I used to play Asheron's Call i'd often see the servers at maximum capacity on patch days back when some of the biggest and funnest events were happening , maximum capacity was around 12,000-12,500 or so and after that it wouldn't let anyone else in. Mind you it was laggy and people had trouble staying in with the amount of traffic trying to get it , the servers were overflowing on days like this. Sometimes for a few days straight.
well, City of heroes is known to have 200,000 subscribers, it is common knowledge that at prime time 20% of your subscriber base is online, CoH has 11 servers so on a normal night 4K or so people are online on each server and servers show on the login screen as yellow (moderate traffic) and only 2 zones will be multi-instancing for lag reduction.
In the End of Beta event the server login was Red (heavy traffic) and EVERY zone had 8 instances. assuming that 4K people creates enough congestion to create 2 extra zones then to create 8 instances of 8+ zones would require that 100K people be on a single server.
All of that is of course speculation.

FFXI and AC dont compare to the asain games, or EQ. EQ has 500k + subscribers, and Lineage I used to have 2mil+ (not sure anymore with L2 out). Im sure ata ANY given time these MMOG's aand Lineage 2 will have twice what everyone else has put together
FFXi is not the largest mmorpg population by any means. As said before the Lineage series has millions of subscribers and is the world leader. In the U.S. EQ still has by far the most subscribers, more twice that of FFXI's U.S. subscriber base.
You need to reread your own linked thread Sir_Sven. It says that FFXI has over 500k world wide not in the U.S. The last numbers FFXI put out indicated less then 250k U.S. subscribers and something like 280k Japanese subs. (No, these are not exact numbers )
FFXI if compared on a world scale has less then 1/4 of Lineage's supposed numbers.
FFXI when looking at U.S. subscribers has less then 1/2 of EQ's U.S. numbers.
Maybe there are 4 million Lineage II gamers in Korea. I remember reading that number somewhere. I think it might just be 4 million gamers in Korea. lol not Lineage II gamers. Who knows.
Well Eve may not have the most subscibers but 10,396 was a record, if i'm not mistaken, for most players in a single persistent world (1 world not many), I'm not sure how many subscribers there are to Eve. Personally i've played many other MMORPG's and a big advantage of Eve IMHO is the fact that there is one persistent world and not many.
FFXI is nowhere near the champion of subscriptions. From everything I have read, Lineage is still on top. At the end of May, we reported on a lawsuit by Korean Lineage players. The item, from South Korea's JoongAng Daily newspaper, stated that over HALF A BILLION Lineage accounts had been opened in Korea alone!!! Click the above link for the reference.
Now, do I believe that in a country of just under 50 million that 500 million+ accounts have been actively registered and played? No way, but there is undoubtedly a large Lineage player population in Korea and throughout southeast Asia. Add that to the European and North American players, and you've definitely got the MMORPG champ. I'd love to see some reliable figures on Lineage.
Ragnarok Online is also huge in SE Asia, so much so that Thailand put an online curfew into effect to keep people from playing too much. The sources I have read place the number of Thai RO players at 600,000 or better, and that doesn't include Korea, Japan, or the US.

EVE claims that they think it is a record, but they don't absolutely guarantee it. If you'll notice their press releases, they'll say that it is what they believe to be a record for a single persistent world. The fact is that no one is reliably keeping such figures for the entire genre. EVE's figures are reliable for their game and there's no doubt that 10,396 is an EVE record (as well as a respectable population for a single world), but it's hard to verify it as an absolute record for all persistent worlds.
It's really more of a testament to their code than anything else, but it's still a heck of an achievement!

True, but over 70% of those accounts were purchased by Korean Cyber Cafes. I forget which site had that..wished I could provide a link.
Lineage is sorta like Microsoft windows here:
A. Microsoft makes the bulk of their money from corporations like Lineage makes the majority of their money from Cyber cafes and coffee shops.
B. Microsoft has pretty much monopolized the OS area in the U.S. as Lineage pretty much monopolized the market in Korea
C. Microsoft is actually a crappy system with more security-lacked backdoors than a Singapore Whore house but since its a big almost monopoly OS, people still buy it. Sorta the same for Lineage

Yeah, I know that the cyber cafes are huge over there and that a ton of people play cafe accounts, but it's still an astonishing number. That's basically 10 accounts for every man, woman and child in South Korea. I would still think that there are well over 1 million dedicated Lineage players in the world, more than twice that of FFXI or EQ. Just speculation on my part.
Does anyone know if Lineage 2 has taken hold in Asia? Is it a real challenge to Lineage's dominance?
----- There are 10 types of people in this world...those who understand binary, and those who don't.
A great many Koreans are fanatical about the Lineage series and they have many korean and U.S. mmorpgs to choose from. The cafes purchase lots of Lineage accounts because thats what keeps the customers coming.
The Lineage series may not appeal to most of us western fans but I think your fooling yourself if you think in Korea they only play it because of a lack of choice or dont love the games. There has been multiple cases of people playing non stop until they died!
Here in the U.S. the original Lineage had enough players to support all of 1 or 2 servers?
Counting their subscribers is difficult because of all the cafe accounts and such but even if you only took 1/4 of their reported accounts it would still be the largest player base mmorpg in the world.
It just goes to show that the world is an amazingly varied place and people can have wildly different tastes.
Edit: I dont know how many subs L2 has in Korea compared to L1 but I know it broke a Korean record for most sales in the first couple weeks.

Everyone gonna have that since it's such low end game and it's free.

I believe Lineage 2 in open beta had 50k users, im not sure though.
P.S. First post!

I know right now the server I'm on on FFXI (Fairy) has 3558 people logged on. I know FFXI atleast has 30 servers, possibly more.

erm, FFXI sure does compare to EQ, since FFXI not too long ago broke the 500K mark in subscribers.
There are 500,000 people in the largest MMORPG game, which is FFXI. But FFXI just recently beat EQ. Passed them and still growing fast and strong.
Take a look at this graph.

But the thing is.....How many of us here really care about Lineage?
Wow. EQ DOES NOT HAVE THE MOST SUBSCRIBERS! LOOK AT THIS LINK!

FFXI HAS MORE THAN 500,000 SUBSRCIBERS IN AMERICA!
LINEAGE isn't even on the link... hrmm...
