I've downloaded the 14 day trial, installed it and began the updating.

It started at 1 hour, then jumped up to 4 hours, then to 12 hours. I left it over night and it was up to 79 hours till completion.

I'm on a 20mb broadband connection which sits steady at around 15-16meg download. I can download a DVD in a couple of hours.

Ok I thought, I'll goto their tech forums and see if I can get any help whith this. Um, seems you are unable to make a new post, reply to posts or even to send PM's on their forums unless you have a FULL active subscription.

I've uninstalled SWG, deleted the folder and reinstalled it to see if it helps at all. Currently it's sitting at 1 hour 49 minutes to complete, and climbing.

    a. Just leave it running

    b. Exit the launcher and fire it up again, sometimes it hangs.

    c. Play something else.

  • ElgarLElgarL Member UncommonPosts: 191

I did exit the launcher and fire it up again. The time to complete doubled.

I also left it running for over 12 hours. When I came back it was estimating 79 hours to complete.

Currently after a new install it's showing 2 hours.

I'm not sure then sorry, I've downloaded it a few times and it's taken a while, but it always got there in the end...

  • ElgarLElgarL Member UncommonPosts: 191

I'll keep going. It seems to get really messed up when you stop it and restart after a fresh install.

I really want to give the game a try as I've been addicted to all of the Jedi knight games late.

It all depends how busy the patch servers are over all the SOE games.  Since the EQ games recently had an expansion it's probably going to be slowing down the patch servers while people are downloading that.  The download timer isn't exactly accurate either, it can often say it will take alot longer then it actually does.

Is there somewhere I can manually download the patch as it's been stuck on 38 minutes for over two hours now?

I dare not stop it and restart the launcher as that's what I did last time and it really fubar'd after that.

Here's a list of most of the files up to Feburary here, http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m?start=15&topic_id=254140#2901905.  To find which you need, click the View Details button on Launchpad and look at the name of the file it's stuck on then look for it in that list.  If it's not there, you should be able to adjust the URL's there to get the file.

Thanks. I guess it must be their servers as even a manual download is only achieving 75kb/sec, or they are hosted on dial-up.

15 - 16 Mb per second ? are you sure? because:

    if 1 byte = 8 bit and 1 megabyte = 1024 kbyte = 1.048.576 bytes then 1.048.576 bytes are in bit: 8.388.608 bit per second then: 8.388.608 / 1024 (in kbits) / 1024 (in megabits) are:

8 Mbit (megabit) are 1 Mbyte (Megabyte)

so youre telling me that you got a 16 Megabyte Connection:

that would mean that you got a 128 Mbit Internet Connecton ? whats your provider? because in europe our max internet connection is: 16 Mbit (megabit) per second which means that we got: 2 Megabytes per second :)

    dont confuse Megabits and Megabytes....

It's ok, PJ is showing himself to be the ass by assuming mb refers to mega bytes, when in internet connection terms it refers to bits.

In Europe you may only get a maximum of 16mb, In England on cable we get up to 20mb.

You could have a 3Bit connection and it wouldn't make any difference if the far-end/host server is slow (due to high traffic or whatever the reason is).

    A few things:

    1) You're a potential customer, you don't want to be bothered with 'they are slow because' of this or that.  You want to play... right?  And you want to play SWG, who cares about EQ or EQ2.

    2) If you are a potential customer and can't get support, how are actual customers supported?  Find a phone number or an e-mail address, I'd say.

    3) The game (SWG) has been out for a long time.  In order to get 'caught up', you are going to have to DL a lot of content.  Be prepared for a night of not gaming, imho.  The same would go for updates in EQ/EQ2 (I'm speaking from experience in all 3 games).

    ...

What you are being asked to do is make allowances for the gaming company.  You are going to need to get used to that menality with SOE.  You will be asked time and again to overlook their shortcomings and keep your rose-colored glasses on.

GL with the DL and your gaming experience.  I hope it gets better from here for you.

How about we just agree that SOE have a "2 bit" connection and leave it at that

    I've found the problem.

Sony have some HEAVY bandwidth restrictions on port 7040 for the patch server. However, it seems you can pull from that server on any open port. It's still VERY slow and unreliable, but using port 80 I'm able to get much better speeds.

It's clearly a physical limitation SOE have imposed on their patch server setup.

I don't really think it's nerdy or petty at all. I think he was just stating a point and trying to explain himself.  Maybe if you ever have a test on internet connection speeds you'll get this question right.

This is absolutely ridiculous. By the time it's finished updating my 14 day trial will be over.

I checked the update log and there's hundreds of files that don't even exist in the install folder which it needs to download.

Currently showing 25 hours to finish.

At the speed this game is updating there will be no point in trying it out. Add to that the fact that there's NO way to even get technical support from SOE for a trial customer.

I REALLY want to try the game and give it a chance to grab me as a permanent subscriber, but I'm now into day two of just updating game files.

Unfortunately SWG's patch servers are notorious for having dodgy downloads.  They were like this when the game first went live.

Just start it downloading before you go to bed and hope you get a fair chunk down whilst you sleep.  Its bad, yes and theres no excusing it but its the only way not to waste too much of your time.

One thing to remember, you dont have to use the same account to play the trial you know ;)

Once you've downloaded it, just create another trial account using the same email address and start the 14 day trial from fresh.

Well it's over 2 days now of updating and it's estimating another day at least. The PC has been on for a SOLID 2 days updating and it's got nowhere.

I just went to the SOE support site and tried to use the chat support. I filled in all of the fields and it gave me a nice error box with NOTHING in it. I was then thrown out to the email support.

I filled in the email support page (every box), and pressed continue. I got an error about a sub box requiring to be filled in. Pressed back in my browser and a new box had appeared. I filled that in and it did finally submit my question (I believe).

Absolutely terrible performance and even worse support for a game I want to give a chance. If it wasn't 'Star Wars' I'd have gone onto another title long ago. I really don't see how SOE expect to attract customers like this.

BTW I'm already an ex SOE customer from the Vanguard debacle.

EDIT: Oh in addition the website security certificate on the sony customer support site is an invalid certificate. It's in the wrong name.

Sorry to be a jerk but you should know better then to deal with SOE.  You get what you deserve.

Honestly, do you think SOE honestly cares about you or your ability to play any of their games? The only thing they care about is how much monies you're giving them and in this case....zilch!

SWG is *NOT* a star wars experiance.  It's a shamble.  The closet thing it has to Star Wars is the title of the game its self...

p.s. Having a 9mb connection took me something close to 3-4 days to download the patches.  You can paint a turd gold, but it's still going to be a turd.

Keep in mind that for whatever reason, some ISPs block the ports the patcher wants to use.  My old ISP used to do this and meant my downloads through Launchpad were trickling in at only 2kb/s and would usually fail.  I wasn't overly happy with the ISP for other reasons as well, so switched to a different one and my downloads on Launchpad were coming in at full speed and they still do today.  Another I know in game has had this happen to him as well with his ISP, and after chasing up the ISP over it managed to get the issue solved.

Be sure to also check your router and see if opening the appropriate ports improves things.

    www.portforward.com

They list pretty much every game that has problems with blocked ports. SWG isn't listed which means it's either not commonly effected by port forwarding problems or not enough people have reuqested the info. I'm pretty sure this is an SOE problem, ISP's that block ports (mainly to limit torrent downloads) will be noticeable while trying to play a lot of games online not just SWG or mmo's in general for that matter.

I still find it odd that after all this time, after having such an erratic service through launch pad that they don't throw the patch files to be hosted all over the place. It works well for Blizzard, on patch days for WoW I can easily find up to 50 mirrors for the patch.

I'm with Virgin media and I know they don't block any ports.

Star Wars galaxies isn't listed on Portforward.com.

After some searching I did find the port info though. We will see how it performs with port triggering/forwarding setup.
