Battle of the SCI-FI MMO's, which one will you play?

chryseschryses Member UncommonPosts: 1,453

As an avid Sci-Fi fan I started my days playing Earth & Beyond then Jumpgate, onto Neocrom until EVE launched and I have been staying with it since.  What has been frustrating for me is the lack of SCI-FI mmo's on the market and now things are about to change...

Out of the mmo's below (existing and being developed) which one will you play?

Will the SCI-FI MMO market become flooded?

I for one will stick with EVE and definitely try out Jumpgate Evolution.

Fallen Earth all the way...and yes it is Sci-fi/fantasy :).

EDIT: Not sure if you can really place Fallen Earth in the sci-fi theme. I think it would fall under "post-apocalypse". However there is allian tech. So....

StarGate and Star Trek will be getting my attention.

There is simply nothing right now that I feel is great... AoC may be but on the Sci-Fi frontier I have HOPES for the 'top secret BioWare' mmorpg to be Sci-Fi [Star Wars, Mass Effect, ?] and a much less likely ... FIREFLY.  I loved that show, SERENITY movie kicks ass... Firefly should not have been cancelled but sadly corportate asshats at FOX lack foresight.

There is only one true sci-fi. Stargate!

I badly want to take a break from fantasy games, but none of the sci-fi titles that are currently released or on the horizon really appeal to me. Tabula Rasa comes the closest due to the backstory and the atmosphere, but I'm just not a big fan of the gameplay after three weeks of trying it. I'll almost certainly buy 'n try Stargate Worlds and Star Trek Online, but neither have me trembling with anticipation. I tend to prefer original IPs, which is why Tabula Rasa was interesting to me. I don't enjoy PvP (though I did play EVE for 7 months), so the other options aren't really options at all.

How can anyone favor -gate over -trek?

The best scifi mmorpg I have played is anarchy online.  I am hoping that stargate is good.  I don't have much hope for star trek.

If you are not being responded to directly, you are probably on my ignore list.

Trek is better than gate as a show but SGW looks like a very promising mmo

EVE.  Jumpgate might be good when they finally get it (re)done.  It sounds like they're trying to bring more of the life that X: Beyond the Frontier and the original Elite had, into their MMO.  If their AI really works as well as those games, it might be the sleeper hit of the year.

How many folks remember rushing their Boron hauler to dock slightly above safe speed to beat an incoming hauler so you'd get the higher prices before they flooded the market with goods?  An MMO with that would be pretty impressive.  EVE has the potential, but their npc's don't take part in the economy.

Id disagree about the trek vs gate, after B5 and gate I think trek was kinda boring and over rated... but each to their own.

In anycase currently I'd say its Eve, and especially after the trinity graphics expansion, I can see many people buying that or doing the 14 day trial just to try them them out.

But having only just put up a website about it and not released a date for it yet then its looking like it might be delayed.

So while waiting for that I've bought Tabula rasa to try that out and thats also shaping up to be a very good sci-fi mmo! makes a change from killing mobs with swords and spells to shotguns and grenades (with a bit of magic)

however I think Eve would win my vote, since im the kind of sci-fi fan that just HAS to have spaceships.. and many of them :)

I would have to say EVE. I'm keeping an eye on Jumpgate though.

Will the SCI-FI MMO market become flooded?

I don't see it going to the same extent as you do fantasy titles. I think developers are recognizing that folks are tiring of fantasy MMO's and looking to other genres to try out, but fantasy will always remain the most used setting in MMO's.

The reason Fantasy is more popular among developing ideas instead of Sci-Fi is because Sci-fi usually involves guns. It's not that guns are viewed as "bad" but that it usually involved First-Person shooter, "RP" combat simply makes more sense with melee and spells than it does with science-guns, in which first-person shooter makes more sense. It's just a mtter of time before more games use FPS and then the market will grow, however RP will probably remain (reasons said earlier) the main combat for a long time to come.

    Back to the OP:

I voted for Star Trek simply because I dont like SG much at all (except Atlantis a bit) and I love Trek, whether or not it will be a huge success is another story, I'm iffy about it as I dont really like a lot of the decisions made be the STO perpetual team but none the less, STo is at the top of my list.

I tried EVE, it was ok but didnt really interest me, great graphics though and I might try it out again when they add the ability to walk around on ships.

There others I'm just not really interested in but if they end up having free beta or trials ill check them out. Just because I love Trek doesnt mean I'm stuck with it, I love SW also but I havent played SWg much in the last year.

Sci Fi genres always offer so much yet deliver so very little. Not to mention the crazy storyies they force to experience, let the technolagy do the talking!

Unfortunatly I guess that makes me a simple mind, so I'll go with tabula rasa. Hypnotic shooting grinding tastes better than auto attack snoreathons.

Voting for Jumpgate. If Eve provided something actually interesting for other than just the top 10% of the playerbase, maybe. But waiting around doing nothing and skimming off the leftovers of the megacorps is less than interesting.

Just started EVE, and damn... wow is the word.

A free market, real pirates, no damnable forced factions, and the eventual ability to leave a permanent mark in the game, a named station that will always be there? Awesome, EVE for me.

  • farokfarok Member UncommonPosts: 37

If done right, I will be playing Star Trek Online. But, as said before... IP's  generally don't do well... I guess I will just have to wait and see...
